He also wrote dialogues and screenplays for many Hindi films and edited several prominent magazines. He was honoured with the Sahitya Akademi Award. His writing is marked by sharp social and political satire, deep concern for the common man, and a fearless critique of hollow officialdom and slavish mentality, all of which are visible in 'George Pancham Ki Naak'.
📖 Detailed Explanation
The story is a sharp satire written against the backdrop of an expected visit by Queen Elizabeth II to India. The whole of England is busy with preparations for her tour. The newspapers are full of details about her clothes, her dressmakers and the security arrangements. The author mocks this frenzy, especially the way the British press obsesses over trivialities like which dress the Queen will wear. This sets the satirical tone of the lesson and shows how outward show is given more importance than real substance.

When the news of the Queen's visit reaches India, the Indian administration too is gripped by anxiety. Officials are worried about cleaning the roads, painting buildings and beautifying the city. In the middle of all this, the focus shifts to the statue of George V (George Pancham), the Queen's ancestor, that stands in India. The shocking discovery is made that the nose of this statue is missing — it has been broken off. Since the Queen is to pass that way, this becomes a matter of grave national embarrassment for the officials.

A meeting is held and the matter of the nose becomes the most urgent question of the state. The 'naak' (nose) here is symbolic — it stands for prestige, honour and self-respect. The officials feel that if George Pancham's statue is seen without a nose, it will be an insult to the royal guest. The work of fixing the nose is entrusted to a sculptor. The author uses this episode to ridicule the colonial hangover of the Indian officials, who still treat the symbols of their former British rulers with exaggerated reverence.

The sculptor takes up the challenge. He examines old records and goes to find a stone that would match the original statue. But he cannot find a suitable matching stone anywhere — not in the hills, not in famous buildings, nor in any historic monument. Frustrated, he reports that the stone of George Pancham's nose was special and no matching stone is available. The administration, however, refuses to accept failure; the nose must be fixed at any cost before the Queen arrives.

Finally the sculptor hits upon a shocking and disturbing solution. Since no suitable stone can be found, he decides to fix a 'living' nose on the statue — that is, to cut off the nose of a real, living human being and fix it on the statue. The author, through this grotesque idea, exposes how the officials value the prestige of a dead foreign king's statue more than the life and dignity of a living Indian human being. This is the cruel climax of the satire.

After much effort the statue's nose is restored before the Queen's arrival, and the officials breathe a sigh of relief. But the newspapers are now strangely silent. Earlier they had reported every detail, but now no paper writes about whose nose was actually cut and fixed onto the statue. This silence is deeply ironic. It suggests that the truth has been deliberately suppressed, and it leaves the reader uneasy. The author ends by hinting that the price of false prestige was paid by some unknown, helpless common man.

📝 Summary
On the news of Queen Elizabeth II's planned visit to India, both England and the Indian administration plunge into elaborate, almost comical preparations. While English papers fuss over the Queen's dresses, Indian officials suddenly discover that the nose of George Pancham's statue is broken. As the Queen will pass by it, restoring the nose becomes a matter of national 'prestige'. A sculptor searches everywhere for a matching stone but fails. Refusing to let the statue lose face, he finally fixes a nose cut from a living human being. The statue's honour is saved, but the newspapers fall silent about whose nose it was. Through this biting satire, Kamleshwar mocks the slavish, colonial mindset of officials who prize the symbols of foreign rulers over the dignity and very life of the common Indian, and exposes how empty show and false prestige triumph over truth and humanity.

The title 'George Pancham Ki Naak' is highly appropriate and symbolic. Literally, it refers to the broken nose of George V's statue that the officials are desperate to restore. But the word 'naak' in Hindi also means honour, prestige and self-respect. Thus the title cleverly points to the false 'naak' (prestige) of a colonial hangover, and the lengths to which people go to save face. The entire plot revolves around this nose, making the title both literal and richly ironic — perfectly suited to the satirical theme.
