Overview

About the author: This essay is written by Sachchidananda Hirananda Vatsyayan, popularly known by his pen name 'Agyeya'. He was born in 1911 at Kushinagar (Deoria), Uttar Pradesh, and passed away in 1987. Agyeya was a many-sided personality — poet, novelist, story-writer, essayist, editor and journalist. He is regarded as the pioneer of the 'Prayogvad' (Experimentalism) and 'Nayi Kavita' (New Poetry) movements in Hindi literature, and he edited the famous poetry anthology 'Taar Saptak' (1943). His major works include the novels 'Shekhar: Ek Jeevani' and 'Nadi Ke Dweep', and the poetry collections 'Aangan Ke Paar Dwaar' and 'Kitni Naavon Mein Kitni Baar'. He was honoured with the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Jnanpith Award. His language is refined, intellectual and reflective, and he is known for bringing psychological depth and self-analysis into Hindi prose.
📖 Detailed Explanation
At the very beginning of the essay, Agyeya admits that the question 'Why do I write?' is a difficult one to answer, because the moment one tries to answer it sincerely, one realises how little one truly knows about oneself. He says that he can attempt only a partial and tentative answer. According to him, the basic reason he writes is his inner compulsion (अनुभूति / inner pressure). It is his inner urge that makes him write — a writer first deeply experiences something within, and that experience demands expression. He clarifies that he does not write merely for fame, money or to please publishers and editors; the truly creative impulse comes from inside, not from outside compulsions.

Agyeya distinguishes between two kinds of motivation for writing — the inner urge and the outer pressure. He says that for him, the inner urge (आंतरिक विवशता) is the real reason. A writer experiences something so intensely that until he expresses it, he cannot find peace; writing helps him understand and identify that experience fully. The outer pressures — such as the demand of editors, the need for money, or the desire for recognition — may make a person write, but such writing is not genuine creation. He honestly admits that he himself has sometimes written under such outer pressure, but he does not consider that to be his true reason for writing.

To explain the difference between the urge of a true writer and that of a non-writer, Agyeya gives the example of a scientist and a poet. He says that knowledge of science and the impulse of creation are different things. A scientist may discover and prove the same truth that a poet feels, but their inner relationship with that truth is different. To make this clear, he narrates the famous example of the atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima during the Second World War.

Agyeya relates that he had read a great deal about the atom bomb and the destruction it caused at Hiroshima, and he had even written something about it earlier. But this was based only on his intellectual knowledge — facts he had gathered from reading and hearing. The real, deep experience came later when he actually visited Hiroshima. There he saw the human shadows scorched permanently onto stone by the heat of the explosion — in particular, the shape of a man burnt into a stone, the man himself having been vaporised, leaving only his shadow behind. This direct, lived experience shook him so deeply that the subject came alive within him in a completely new way.

After returning from Hiroshima, one evening when Agyeya was sitting alone, suddenly that scorched stone and the human shadow rose powerfully in his memory. This time it was not mere bookish knowledge but a directly felt experience. At that moment a poem on Hiroshima 'wrote itself out' from within him. He explains that this is the difference between his earlier writing about Hiroshima (which was based on second-hand information and intellectual understanding) and the later poem (which sprang from a genuine inner experience). This, he says, is the true source of his creative writing — the compulsion of an experience that has been truly lived and felt.

Through the whole essay, Agyeya reaches the conclusion that true literature is born only out of genuine, deeply felt inner experience and the inner compulsion to express it. Mere information or knowledge, however vast, cannot by itself produce real creative writing; it has to first become a part of the writer's own felt experience. The Hiroshima incident perfectly illustrates how an experience that one has truly lived and absorbed forces itself out in the form of creation. For Agyeya, then, he writes because of this inescapable inner pressure of self-discovery and the urge to know and express his own deepest experiences.

📝 Summary
In this self-reflective essay, the writer Agyeya tries to answer the question of why he writes. He honestly admits that the question is difficult and that he can give only a partial answer. He concludes that the main reason he writes is an inner compulsion or urge — he writes to know and identify his own inner experiences, not for fame, money or to satisfy editors. He distinguishes between the inner urge (the real cause of creative writing) and outer pressures (which produce ordinary, non-creative writing). To show how true writing is born from lived experience rather than mere knowledge, he narrates his visit to Hiroshima. Though he had read much about the atom bomb and even written about it earlier, the subject became a real, living experience only when he actually saw a human shadow scorched onto a stone by the bomb's heat. Later, sitting alone one evening, this experience rose so powerfully within him that a poem on Hiroshima wrote itself out. Agyeya concludes that genuine literature comes only from an inner experience that has been truly felt and that demands expression.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea of the essay is that genuine creative writing is born not from outer pressures like fame, money or the demands of editors, but from an inner compulsion — the writer's deeply felt, lived experience that forces itself into expression. True literature comes from self-experience, not from mere accumulated knowledge.

🧭 Message & Title
The essay conveys the message that real, lasting literature is created only from sincere, deeply felt personal experience and an honest inner urge — not from greed for money, hunger for fame, or external compulsion. A true creator must first live an experience before expressing it. It also subtly warns against the misuse of science, which can bring terrible destruction to humanity, as seen at Hiroshima.

The title 'Main Kyon Likhta Hoon?' (Why Do I Write?) is perfectly apt because the entire essay is the writer's honest self-examination of the very question posed in the title. Agyeya explores his own motives, distinguishes between inner urge and outer pressure, and finally answers — through the Hiroshima example — that he writes because of an inner compulsion born of lived experience. Since the whole essay is structured as an answer to this question, the title is fully justified and thought-provoking.

Agyeya argues that mere knowledge, however vast, is not enough to produce true creative writing; only a deeply lived and felt experience can do that. To prove this, he uses the Hiroshima example. He had read a great deal about the atom bomb and the destruction it caused, and had even written about it earlier — but this was based only on second-hand information and intellectual understanding, so it was not genuine creation. The real change came when he actually visited Hiroshima and saw with his own eyes a human shadow scorched onto a stone by the bomb's heat, the man himself having been reduced to vapour. This direct, lived experience shook him deeply. Later, sitting alone one evening, that scorched stone and shadow rose so powerfully in his memory that a poem on Hiroshima wrote itself out from within him. Thus Agyeya shows that knowledge becomes literature only when it is transformed into a personally felt experience that demands expression — this inner compulsion born of lived experience is the true source of writing.

Agyeya identifies several reasons that may make a person write. Some write for fame and recognition, some for money, some under the demand or pressure of editors and publishers, and some simply because of an outer compulsion of circumstances. He honestly admits that he too has sometimes written under such outer pressures. However, he does not consider any of these to be the truest reason for writing. According to him, the truest reason is the inner urge or inner compulsion — a deeply felt inner experience that makes the writer restless until he expresses it. This kind of writing is genuine creation because it springs from within and helps the writer know and identify his own self and experiences. Writing done only for external reasons is mechanical and lifeless, whereas writing born of inner experience is alive and true. Agyeya thus places the inner compulsion of lived experience above all external motives as the real source of literature.
