What are Levels of Analysis?
Levels of analysis are different perspectives used to explain behaviour and mental processes. In psychology we commonly use three complementary levels: biological, psychological (also called individual or cognitive/behavioral), and social-cultural. Each level asks different questions and uses different methods but all contribute to a fuller understanding of the same phenomenon.
1. Biological level
Focus: brain structures, neurotransmitters, hormones, genes and physiological processes that underlie behaviour and mental states. Methods include brain imaging (fMRI, EEG), genetic studies, pharmacology and physiological measurement (heart rate, cortisol).
Key idea: biological mechanisms make behaviour possible and can influence susceptibility to disorders.
2. Psychological (individual) level
Focus: mental processes (perception, memory, thinking), emotions, motives, learning history and personality. Methods include experiments, psychometric tests, cognitive tasks and clinical interviews.
Key idea: how an individual perceives, learns and thinks shapes behaviour — e.g., attribution style, coping strategies, cognitive biases.
3. Social-cultural level
