Colonel Collins tells the Sawar about Wajid Ali Shah, the Nawab of Awadh, who had been removed from the throne and exiled to Calcutta by the British. The Colonel speaks of the deep loyalty the people of Awadh still felt for their Nawab, and how the British had to be constantly alert. The most dangerous rebel in the area was Vajir Ali, the Nawab of Awadh's spirited and daring loyalist. Vajir Ali had killed Company's vakil (lawyer) Cavalry and the Englishman who had come to capture him, and had then become a fearless fugitive roaming the jungles.

The Colonel explains that Vajir Ali was an extraordinarily brave man. He had even sent letters to the Afghan ruler Shah Zaman of Kabul, inviting him to attack India and drive the British out. Vajir Ali was so cunning and quick that despite all efforts, the British could not capture him. The Colonel admits that catching Vajir Ali was like 'searching for a needle in a forest'. This builds up the larger-than-life image of Vajir Ali even before he appears on stage.

Suddenly the Sawar reports that the sound of a horse's hooves can be heard approaching. A man on horseback arrives at the tent. He is cloaked and mysterious. He boldly enters the Colonel's tent and demands to meet the Colonel alone. The man speaks with great confidence and authority, and the Colonel, sensing danger but also curiosity, agrees to speak with him.

Justification of the Title

The title 'Kartoos' (Cartridges) is highly appropriate and symbolic. The entire climax of the play turns on the cartridges that Vajir Ali boldly demands and receives from Colonel Collins himself—the very man trying to kill him. The cartridge represents both the armed struggle of 1857 and the audacity of Vajir Ali, who obtained ammunition from his enemy to fight that same enemy. It is also historically resonant, recalling the greased cartridges that sparked the Revolt of 1857. Thus 'Kartoos' captures the central act, the central irony and the central spirit of the play in a single word.

Long Answer Questions
Q. 'Kartoos' presents Vajir Ali as a brave and clever patriot. Discuss his character with reference to the play.

Vajir Ali, the deposed Nawab of Awadh, is the heroic centre of the play and a shining example of patriotism, courage and intelligence. Deeply devoted to his country, he refused to accept British domination after being removed from his throne. He killed Company officers, became a fugitive, and even wrote to Shah Zaman of Kabul, inviting him to attack the British and free India—showing his strategic, far-sighted patriotism. His most striking quality is fearless courage: living hunted in the jungle, he still dared to ride straight into Colonel Collins's camp, the camp of the man hunting him. There he displayed brilliant presence of mind and cunning, posing as Vajir Ali's own enemy and offering to help capture him. He calmly accepted ten cartridges from the Colonel and, only while leaving, revealed his true identity before galloping away to safety. Through this single bold act he proved himself braver and cleverer than the entire British force pursuing him. Even his enemy, the Colonel, was forced to admire him as a 'brave soldier'.

Q. Justify the title 'Kartoos' and explain how the play reflects the spirit of the 1857 freedom struggle.

The title 'Kartoos' (Cartridges) is perfectly suited to the play, both literally and symbolically. The entire climax depends on the cartridges that Vajir Ali boldly demands and receives from Colonel Collins himself. The cartridge becomes a powerful symbol: it represents the armed struggle of 1857, and the supreme irony that a freedom fighter obtained ammunition from his own enemy to fight that enemy. Historically, the cartridge also recalls the greased cartridges that triggered the Revolt of 1857. The play reflects the spirit of that struggle in many ways: it portrays a deposed ruler, Vajir Ali, refusing to bow to British annexation; it shows the deep loyalty of the people of Awadh to their Nawab; it depicts attempts to unite with other powers (Shah Zaman) against the British; and above all it celebrates the fearless courage, patriotism and sacrifice of the rebels. Just as the cartridges symbolise resistance, Vajir Ali symbolises the unquenchable desire for freedom that drove the events of 1857. Therefore the title 'Kartoos' aptly captures the central object, the central irony, and the revolutionary spirit of the entire play.
