Sparsh Poem

Overview

O Hari, please remove the suffering of your devotee. You protected Draupadi's honour when you yourself extended (kept increasing) her sari. For the sake of your devotee Prahlad you took the form of Narasimha (man-lion). You saved the drowning king of elephants (Gajraj) and ended the elephant's pain (by killing the crocodile). Your servant-maid Meera too says: O dear Giridhar, remove my suffering as well.

O Shyam, please keep me as your servant. O dear Giridhari, keep me as your servant. As a servant I will plant a garden, and rise every day to have your darshan (sight). In the bowers and lanes of Vrindavan I will sing of Govind's divine play (leela). Through this service I will gain your darshan, gain remembrance (sumiran) as my wages, and gain devotion as a jagir (estate) — all three things at once. The peacock-feather crown and yellow robe adorn you, and the vaijayanti garland hangs at your throat; the flute-playing Mohan grazes the cows in Vrindavan. I will build high palaces with windows in between, and wearing a saffron-coloured sari I will behold my dark-hued beloved. The yogi comes to practise yoga and the sanyasi to do penance, but immersed in devotion to Hari, Meera dances and sings — Meera has become his maidservant.

📝 Summary

These two padas of Meerabai express her complete surrender and loving devotion to Lord Krishna (Giridhar Gopal). In the first pada she prays to Hari to remove her sorrow, reminding him of how he protected his devotees in the past — he saved Draupadi's honour by extending her sari, took the form of Narasimha for Prahlad, and rescued the drowning elephant Gajraj. Just as he helped them, Meera, his humble maidservant, begs him to relieve her of her suffering. In the second pada Meera longs not for wealth or queenship but only to be Krishna's servant. As his servant she would plant gardens, have his daily darshan, and sing of his leelas in the lanes of Vrindavan. Through such service she would receive three gifts together: his darshan, his remembrance as wages, and devotion as an estate. She lovingly describes Krishna's form — the peacock crown, yellow robe and vaijayanti garland — and declares that while yogis and sanyasis follow hard paths of penance, she has chosen the path of love, dancing and singing as Krishna's devoted maid.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

The padas teach that true devotion lies in selfless love and complete surrender to God, not in the pursuit of wealth, status or outward rituals. When one trusts God wholeheartedly like Meera, the same Lord who has always protected his devotees will surely relieve one's sorrows.

Justification of the Title

The chapter is simply titled 'Pad' (verses/devotional songs), the traditional name for the short lyrical compositions sung by Bhakti saints. The title is apt because both compositions are independent padas of Meera, complete in themselves, meant to be sung — each carrying a single emotional appeal of love and surrender to Krishna. The name keeps the focus on the devotional song-form characteristic of Meera's poetry.

Long Answer Questions
Q. In the first pada Meera reminds Krishna of his past acts of grace. Discuss how these examples strengthen her own prayer.

In the first pada Meera prays to Hari to remove her suffering and supports her appeal by recalling three famous instances of his grace. She reminds him how he extended Draupadi's sari endlessly to protect her honour in Dushasana's assembly, how he took the fierce form of Narasimha to save the boy-devotee Prahlad from his cruel father, and how he rescued the elephant-king Gajraj who was being dragged into the water by a crocodile. By citing these examples Meera establishes that Krishna is bhakta-vatsal — ever loving and protective towards his devotees. Her argument is simple yet powerful: the Lord who has always run to the aid of those in distress cannot ignore his own humble maidservant. These illustrations thus turn her prayer into a confident, faith-filled plea rather than a mere request, expressing her total trust that the same grace will surely reach her too. The references also lend the pada the authority of scripture and tradition, making her personal devotion part of a larger story of God's mercy.

Q. In the second pada Meera wishes to become Krishna's servant rather than enjoy royal comforts. What does this reveal about the nature of her devotion?

Although Meera was a Rajput princess and queen of Mewar, in the second pada she expresses no desire for wealth, throne or palace luxuries; instead she begs Krishna to keep her merely as his servant. She wishes to plant gardens for him, rise daily for his darshan, and sing his leelas in the lanes of Vrindavan. This reveals the selfless, humble and intensely personal nature of her devotion. For Meera, service itself is the reward — through it she gains his sight, his remembrance and pure devotion, which she values far above any earthly estate. The desire to wear a simple saffron sari and watch her dark beloved from a window shows her longing for closeness rather than grandeur. Finally, by contrasting herself with yogis and sanyasis who follow hard paths of penance, she declares that she has chosen the easy and joyful path of love — dancing and singing as his maidservant. Thus the pada reveals her devotion as one of complete surrender (dasya-bhakti), free of ego and worldly ambition, in which love and service to Krishna are the highest goals of life.
