Children begin by seeing two small groups of objects and being asked which group has more, which has less and whether any two groups are the same. Teachers use everyday items like crayons, buttons or apples. Comparing is a way to tell about amounts. It does not need big numbers: we compare groups of 1 to 10 objects to start. The teacher models language: 'This group has more', 'This group has less', 'Both groups are the same'. Children practise by looking, touching and counting objects. Play and movement help learning — put objects in two circles on the floor and ask children to move one item from one circle to another and say what changed. Use clear words and short sentences. Praise correct observations and gently correct mistakes by recounting or matching items one-to-one. Comparing helps children notice differences and similarities in number. It also prepares them to add or take away objects later.
Counting is the main tool for comparing. Children learn to count objects aloud, pointing to each item as they say the number name so each object is counted once. Teachers show careful counting: start at one side and move the finger across the group, touching every object. Counting should be slow and steady to avoid skipping. After counting both groups, children say the two numbers and then decide which is more, which is less or if both are the same.
Begin with small numbers up to 5, then increase to 10 as confidence grows. Use trays, boxes or drawn circles so groups are clear and do not get mixed. Use games to make practice fun: roll a die to create a group, count the pips and compare with a friend. Encourage children to always answer in a sentence, for example, ‘Group A has four.’ If a child is unsure, show how to recount slowly and match objects one-to-one to check. Also teach children that after counting, the larger spoken number means the group has more items. Counting helps build order and number sense and prepares children for addition and subtraction in later classes.
'More' means one group has a larger number of items than another. Begin with simple spoken examples: show two piles and ask children to point to the pile that has more. Use objects children know, such as fruits, crayons or blocks. Let children move the objects and say which pile became more after adding items. Encourage sentences like 'This pile has more than that pile.' When children are ready, introduce the sign '>' and show how it is a short way to write 'is more than'. Use a clear rule: the open side faces the larger number and the point faces the smaller number. Practise with number sentences such as 6 > 3 and ask children to read them aloud in words.
Children learn more quickly with games and hands-on work. Give two number cards and ask which is greater. Use story contexts: 'Tina has 7 sweets, Rahul has 3 sweets. Who has more?' Let children answer and show with counters. Also show that adding items can change which group is more, so learners see how numbers grow. Reinforce with praise and repeated short practice to build confidence.
'Less' or 'fewer' means one group has a smaller number of items than another. Teach children with clear, short sentences and real objects: show two groups and ask which one has fewer. Use words children hear often, like 'fewer' when talking about countable things. Introduce the sign '<' and explain it simply: the open side faces the larger number and the point faces the smaller number. For example, 2 < 5 shows that 2 is less than 5. Practise reading such symbols aloud: say 'two is less than five'.
Use hands-on activities to deepen understanding. Ask a child to remove one or two objects and observe that the group becomes less. Play subtraction-as-taking-away games: take away one toy and ask how many remain, then compare. Also use matching: try to pair items from a smaller group to a bigger group and notice leftover items in the larger group; this shows which is fewer. Encourage full sentence answers like 'Group A has fewer than Group B' so children learn both language and number sense together. Repeat short activities in different contexts so the idea of less becomes familiar.
Extend practice by using story examples and classroom tasks. For instance, say 'There were 8 biscuits, we ate 3. Are there fewer now?' Let children count and answer. Use pictures where students cross out objects to show removal and then compare the remaining groups. Make group work where one child gives away some counters to another and then asks the class whether his group now has fewer. Such active demonstrations help children connect the word 'less' with actions and changes, so they understand both the static comparison and how numbers change over time.
'Same as' or 'equal' means two groups have exactly the same number of items. Teach this idea with matching or pairing: place one object opposite another and see if every item has a partner. If every object in both groups can be paired with one in the other group and none are left over, the groups are equal. Use objects like socks, cups or stones for pairing so children can touch and move items while checking equality.
Introduce the equals sign '=' and show simple equality sentences such as 4 = 4. Explain that equal groups may look different but still have the same number; for example, one group could be a circle of 4 beads and another a line of 4 buttons, yet they are equal. Give many practice activities: match cards in pairs, draw two boxes and put the same number of stickers in each, and use counting to confirm equality. Encourage children to say aloud 'They are the same' or 'They are equal' and to explain how they checked (counting or matching). Use playful tasks where a child changes one group by adding or removing items and asks a friend to make the other group equal, building both counting and social skills.
A number line is a useful visual tool that helps children see order and compare numbers. Draw a straight line and mark equal spaces labeled 0, 1, 2 up to 10. Show two numbers on the line and ask which one is to the right and which to the left. Explain that numbers to the right are larger and numbers to the left are smaller. For example, 7 is to the right of 4 so 7 is more than 4. Use a toy or finger to move along the line: moving right increases the number, moving left decreases it.
Practice with simple activities: place a marker at 3 and another at 6 and ask which marker is further right. Have children jump along a floor number line to reach a number; the one who reaches a higher number will be the one who moved more steps to the right. Use number-line counting to compare two results from dice rolls or card draws. The number line also supports subtraction as taking steps left, which helps when comparing after removal of items. Encourage students to draw their own small number lines and mark numbers they know; this strengthens sense of order and helps them quickly see which of two numbers is greater or smaller.
Comparing groups of objects gives children real practice with the ideas of more, less and same. Start with neat groups on trays, in bowls or drawn on paper so objects are clear and not mixed. Teach sorting first: make sure same-type objects are grouped together which makes counting easier. Use both same-type sets (all buttons) and mixed sets (apples and toys) so children learn that only the number matters for comparing, not the type.
Show tasks like 'Which tray has more shells?' and let children use counting, matching or a number line to answer. Teach quick visual checks for very small numbers (1–4) so children can often tell at a glance without counting every time. Also practise changing groups: add or remove a few objects and ask children how the comparison changes. Pair children and let one make a group while the other guesses if it is more, less or same compared to theirs. Use simple charts to record results and talk about findings in full sentences. These hands-on exercises build confidence and make the abstract concepts of number concrete and meaningful.
Simple word problems help children use comparing in real life. Use short, clear stories: 'Asha has 3 mangoes. Ritu has 5 mangoes. Who has more?' Ask children to draw the items, count and answer in a sentence. Encourage them to show work with drawings, counters or number lines. Role-play activities are useful: distribute snacks to small groups and then ask who has fewer or more, and why. This links counting to real situations and teaches sharing and fairness.
Other activities include class surveys: ask children to choose their favourite colour and make two columns to compare how many children chose each. Use dice and card games that produce two numbers to compare quickly. Provide worksheets with pictures where children circle the group with more, place <, > or = between numbers, or draw extra items to make groups equal. Keep tasks short and varied so attention stays high. Always ask children to explain their answers in a sentence to practise both maths and language skills. Regular, playful practice helps these ideas become automatic.
