2D and 3D shapes — easy words
Children see two kinds of shapes around them. Some shapes are flat. We call these 2D shapes. A circle, square and triangle are flat. They lie on paper and have only length and width.
Other shapes are solid. They take space. We call these 3D shapes. Solids have depth as well as length and width. They can be picked up. A ball, a box and an ice-cream cone are solid shapes. Solids have parts we can touch and count. We use the words face, edge and corner to speak about these parts. Faces are the flat sides you can see. Edges are the lines where faces meet. Corners are the pointy bits where edges meet.
In this unit we will look at many solids. We will place objects on the table and talk about them. We will draw pictures and sort shapes into groups. This helps children learn to name shapes and to know which things are flat and which things are solid.
What is a cuboid?
A cuboid is a common solid that looks like a box. Think of a shoe box, a tissue box or many cardboard boxes we use at home. A cuboid has flat faces; most of these faces are rectangles. The cuboid has three measurements you can notice: length (how long), width (how wide) and height (how tall). When you place a cuboid on a table you can see its top face, bottom face and the side faces.
We use simple words to talk about a cuboid. A face is one flat side you can touch. An edge is a straight line where two faces meet. A corner (or vertex) is the point where edges come together. A usual rectangular cuboid has six faces, twelve edges and eight corners. You can show children a box and ask them to count faces by pointing, count edges by touching the lines, and find corners with their fingers. Encourage them to see that opposite faces are equal rectangles.
Use playing activities: let children wrap a small cuboid with paper, open it and name top and bottom. Ask them which faces are rectangles and if any face is a square. Comparing cuboids of different sizes teaches that cuboids can be long and flat or almost cube-like. These hands-on activities make the idea of a cuboid easy and fun for young learners.
What is a cube?
A cube is a special solid shape where every face is a square of the same size. Examples are building blocks, a sugar cube or a dice. Because all faces are equal squares, every edge of a cube is the same length. A cube has six faces, twelve edges and eight corners. When children hold a cube they can touch the equal faces and compare them to other blocks.
It helps to show a cube and a cuboid together. A cube is like a cuboid but with all sides equal. Ask children to stack cubes to make towers and notice how each smaller cube fits exactly on top of another if the sizes match. Let them count how many faces they can see when a cube stands on the table — usually three faces are visible from one view.
Use simple activities: roll a cube gently and see that it stops on one of its faces; compare this with a ball which rolls away. Encourage children to say words such as square, equal sides, face, edge and corner while touching the cube. Drawing a cube can start with a square and then drawing another square slightly above and to the side, joining corresponding corners to make a 3D look. These steps help children recognise and remember the cube easily.
What is a sphere?
A sphere is a perfectly round solid shape like a ball, orange or a marble. Unlike cubes and cuboids, a sphere has no flat faces, no straight edges and no pointy corners. It is the same shape from every direction. Small children understand a sphere best by feeling and by watching it roll. Place balls of different sizes and ask children to hold them; they can feel the smooth round surface with their palms.
Talk about how a sphere moves: when you roll it on the floor it can move in any direction and keeps rolling easily because of its round shape. Show how a circle on paper is the flat picture we draw to represent a sphere from one view, but the real object you hold is 3D and round all over. Use games like rolling a ball to a friend or putting a ball into a box to see how it fits differently from a cube. Also compare the sphere with other solids: it has no faces, so you cannot count flat sides, and it has no edges to trace.
Use vocabulary while children handle spheres: round, smooth, roll, no face, no edge, no corner. Drawing a shaded circle helps them remember the idea of the sphere as a round 3D object when seen from one side.
What is a cylinder?
A cylinder is a solid that looks like a tin can, a drum or a candle. It has two flat faces that are circles — one on the top and one on the bottom. Between those two circles there is one curved face that wraps around like a label on a tin. The flat circular faces help the cylinder stand upright, and the curved face is smooth and bends around the shape.
Children can learn a cylinder by holding one and noticing its parts. Ask them to find the top and bottom circular faces and then run their hands along the curved side. Explain that a cylinder can roll if you push it on its curved side, but it will roll differently from a ball because the ends are flat. Show how a drum rolls a little and then stops, or how a bottle can be stood up straight on its circular base.
Activities make the idea clear: give children empty, clean tins or cylindrical containers and ask them to name the two round faces and the curved side. Draw two circles on paper and join them with straight lines to draw a cylinder. Use everyday examples: a pencil sharpener tube, a paper towel roll, a water bottle or a glass tumbler can all help children understand cylinders. Repeat the words circle, curved face, top and bottom while they touch and draw.
What is a cone?
A cone is a solid shape you see in ice-cream cones and some traffic signs. It has one flat face which is a circle and one curved surface that comes to a single point or tip. The round face is called the base and the pointed end is the tip. The curved surface slopes up from the base to meet at the tip.
Children can learn about cones by touching the base and feeling the point. Show them an ice-cream cone or make a cone from paper so they can see how the round base holds the ice-cream while the pointy top is empty. Explain that a cone is different from a cylinder because a cylinder has two circular faces but a cone has only one. Unlike a sphere, a cone has a tip.
Use simple activities: roll a cone on the floor and see it move in a circle or wobble; place the cone on its base and notice it stands; draw a cone by sketching a curved base and two lines meeting at a top point. Ask children to name other cones they know, such as party hats or cones used in traffic. Using words like base, tip, curved surface and round help fix the idea. Making cones from paper and decorating them is a fun craft to learn the cone’s parts.
What is a pyramid?
A pyramid is a solid with a flat base and triangular faces that meet at a single top point. One easy type to see is the square-based pyramid: it has a square base and four triangular faces that join at the top. Children often recognise pyramids from toy models or pictures of monuments. The base lies flat on the ground and the triangular faces rise to a point above the base.
To teach pyramids, show a model and let children count the base and the triangular sides. Ask them to place the pyramid on its base and then lift it to see the point. Explain that the number of triangular faces depends on the shape of the base: a triangular base gives three triangles, a square base gives four, and so on. Use building activities: make a pyramid using paper triangles and a square base or use blocks to make a simple roof shape.
Encourage drawing: sketch a square for the base and draw lines from the corners to a point above to show the triangular faces. Compare a pyramid with a cone: both have a top point, but pyramid faces are flat triangles while a cone has one curved surface. Naming parts — base, triangular faces and top point — and hands-on making helps children understand pyramids clearly.
Find shapes around you
Learning is fun when children touch and play. Put many objects on a mat and ask the children to sort them into groups: cubes, spheres, cylinders, cones, cuboids and pyramids. Use picture cards for practice if real objects are not enough. While sorting, ask children to say one reason for each group: 'This is a cylinder because it has two round ends.' Praise correct naming and gentle corrections when needed.
Simple classroom games
Play 'I spy a shape' where the teacher says, 'I spy a sphere' and the child finds a ball. Try a relay: one child runs, picks an object of the named shape and brings it back. Use matching games with pairs of cards showing objects and their shape names. These activities improve observation, speed and vocabulary.
Craft and drawing
Make a small craft house using a cuboid for the body and a pyramid for the roof. Use play dough to shape spheres and cones so children feel the difference. Draw a park scene and label shapes: ball (sphere), water tank (cylinder), toy box (cuboid). Repeat names like face, edge and corner often. Real-life linking helps children remember shapes and see maths around them every day.
