Children learn to write and read number names from one to one hundred. Begin by saying and writing the names of numbers 1 to 20, because these have special words and are used often. When you make other two-digit numbers, you join the tens word with the ones word: for example, 42 is read as 'forty two' — first the tens word, then the ones word. Comparing numbers is an important skill that helps children decide which of two numbers is larger, smaller or if they are equal. Start with hands-on materials: give two groups of counters and ask which group has more. Explain that when comparing two-digit numbers we look at tens first because tens show bigger chunks of ten items. If the tens digits are different, the number with the larger tens digit is greater. If the tens are the same, then we compare the ones digits. Demonstrate by writing numbers in a Tens | Ones chart to make this clear. Use the greater than (>) and less than (<) symbols to record results and the equals sign (=) when both numbers are the same. Show how to read the symbols aloud, for example 'sixty-three is greater than fifty-six.' Use a number line to reinforce the idea visually: numbers to the right are larger, numbers to the left are smaller. Provide many practise pairs and ask children to explain their choice by pointing to tens and ones or placing counters on the number line. Also discuss that leading zeros do not change value, so 03 is the same as 3. Include short word problems that ask children to compare amounts, such as which grocery bag has more apples, so they learn to use comparison signs in everyday contexts.
Ordering numbers means arranging them from smallest to largest (ascending) or from largest to smallest (descending). For example, for 63 − 24, subtract the tens 6 tens − 2 tens = 4 tens, and subtract the ones 3 ones − 4 ones is not possible without borrowing. Explain borrowing by taking 1 ten (10 ones) from the tens place so the ones become 13; now 13 − 4 = 9 and tens become 5 − 2 = 3, giving 39. Use a number line to show subtraction as jumps backwards: start at 63 and jump back 20 then 4 to land at 39. Teach easy subtractions like taking away tens first (80 − 30 = 50) and checking by adding the difference to the smaller number to get the original number. Include small story sums, for example: Rani had 50 candies and gave 18 to friends; how many remain? Practice with various examples so children gain confidence with borrowing and checking answers by addition.
Even numbers are divisible by 2; odd numbers are not. Teach children to recognise even numbers as those that end in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8, and odd numbers end in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9. Use pairing of objects to show even numbers make complete pairs and odd numbers leave one unpaired object. For example, 8 buttons can be paired fully (even), while 7 leave one single (odd).
