Children begin by learning the meaning of three important words: more, less and equal. These words tell us about size or quantity. Use objects that children can touch and move, such as blocks, beads or pictures of fruits. Put two groups on a table and ask the child to look and tell which group has more, which has less, or if both groups are equal. Counting the objects gives a clear answer, but often children learn by sight when one group is much larger.
Give many small examples with numbers up to 10 at first. Ask children to say full sentences like "Six is more than four" or "These two groups are equal." Show that equal groups can look different but still have the same number (for example, four apples arranged in a row and four apples in a circle).
Use games to reinforce the idea: show picture cards and ask the child to choose the card with more animals. Praise correct answers and let them explain why. Repeat with changing arrangements and objects so children understand the idea is about number, not shape or order. Gradually increase numbers toward 20 as confidence grows, always linking the words to counting and to the idea of size on a number line.
Place value is a helpful idea when comparing two-digit numbers. Every two-digit number is made from tens and ones. For example, 34 means 3 tens and 4 ones. To compare numbers like 34 and 29, first look at the tens place: 3 tens (30) is greater than 2 tens (20), so 34 is larger than 29. If the tens are different, we do not need to check the ones. If the tens are the same, then we compare the ones.
Use ten-rods (or sticks) and single blocks to make numbers physically. Let children build numbers with rods for tens and blocks for ones, then place two numbers side by side and see which has more tens. For numbers with the same tens, compare the ones: 47 and 43 both have 4 tens, so compare 7 ones and 3 ones; 47 is larger.
Practice with many pairs of numbers, asking children to say aloud the tens and ones before deciding. Teach the sentence pattern: "Fifty-two has five tens and two ones." Show that place value works for all two-digit numbers up to 99. These ideas will make adding, subtracting and later work with larger numbers much easier for the child.
Once children know which number is larger, they learn three symbols to show that idea quickly: '>' (greater than), '<' (less than) and '=' (equal to). A simple picture story helps: the symbol looks like a hungry crocodile; the crocodile always opens its mouth toward the larger number because it wants to eat more. This fun image helps pupils remember which way the sign faces.
Teach the meaning and the reading aloud: 7 < 9 is read "seven is less than nine." 14 > 8 reads "fourteen is greater than eight." 5 = 5 reads "five equals five." Give many examples using small numbers then move to two-digit numbers after place value is clear. Use cards for numbers and separate cards for the three signs so children can place the correct sign between two number cards.
Make matching activities: show a pair like 11 and 9 and ask children to choose > and explain why: "11 is greater than 9 because it has one more ten." Encourage complete answers in words and to explain direction on a number line. With practice children become quick at choosing the correct symbol and saying full sentences to support their choice.
A number line is a straight line with numbers placed at equal intervals. It is a very useful tool for showing which number is larger: numbers to the right are bigger, numbers to the left are smaller. Start with a number line from 0 to 20 so children can see many numbers at once and use it to compare any two numbers in that range.
Teach pupils to find a number on the line and to compare its position with another number. For example, to compare 7 and 12, place a finger on 7 and then on 12; 12 is to the right, so 12 is greater. Number lines also help when numbers are equal: both numbers point to the same mark. Use jumps to count forward when finding a number, which also strengthens counting skills.
Use games in class: give each child a counter and a number card; they must place the counter at the right point on the line. Then ask which of two counters is to the right. Number lines make abstract comparison concrete and prepare children to understand subtraction as counting back and distance between numbers as difference.
Ordering numbers means arranging them in a sequence either from smallest to largest or from largest to smallest. These two kinds of order have names: ascending (small to big) and descending (big to small). Begin with three numbers under 20. Use place value and the number line to decide which number comes first, second and third.
Use cards with single numbers and ask children to arrange the cards on a table. Let them check by comparing neighbours: in ascending order each number should be greater than the one before it. Teach them to read the order aloud: "Three, five, seven is ascending." For descending order they read "Seven, five, three." Show how to correct mistakes by using the number line to check positions.
Give many practice sets and mix one-digit and two-digit numbers once place value is clear. Show short steps for ordering larger lists: find the smallest and place it first, then find the smallest of the remaining numbers, and continue. This stepwise method is simple and reliable for young learners and builds confidence for longer lists later.
Comparing three numbers uses the same ideas as comparing two numbers but in steps. First find the largest by comparing two numbers, then compare the winner with the third number. Do the same to find the smallest. Using tens and ones helps when numbers are two-digit; a number with more tens is larger.
Use objects or cards to place three groups side by side and ask children to count each group. Ask: which group has the most items, which has the least, and which is in the middle? Teach the term "middle number" for the one that is neither greatest nor least. Show that it is fine to compare in steps: compare A and B, then compare the larger of them with C to find the largest overall.
Practise with many examples, including cases where two numbers are equal. When two are equal make clear whether they are both largest or both smallest. Use number lines to place three points and read the order left to right. These exercises strengthen sequencing and comparison skills which are needed for later work with lists and data.

Practise finding how many more by removing or adding objects until groups match, then count the difference. Such activities build counting accuracy, visual judgment and confidence in using comparison words and symbols.
Word problems put comparison into everyday situations so children see why it matters. Problems use familiar items such as toys, pencils or fruits and are short. Teach pupils to read the problem, underline the numbers, decide what is asked (who has more, how many more, are they equal?), and then solve by counting, using a number line, or by subtraction for "how many more" questions.
For example: "Rani has 9 pencils and Sita has 6. Who has more and by how many?" Children count to check and subtract 9 − 6 = 3 to find how many more. Encourage drawing pictures to represent the story: draw 9 pencils and 6 pencils to compare visually. Remind learners to write the answer in a full sentence and to show the correct sign when required.
Use classroom activities where pupils create their own short problems in pairs and swap with friends to solve. Keep numbers small so children focus on the comparison idea. Practice different types of questions: who has more, are they equal, order the numbers, and find how many more. These help build reading, reasoning and calculation skills together.
