Place value is the idea that where a digit sits tells its value. A digit in the ones place means that many ones. A digit in the tens place means that many tens. For example, the number 24 has 2 tens and 4 ones. When we add numbers in columns, we must line up ones under ones and tens under tens. This keeps numbers in their correct places.
When we first learn addition, we add the ones first and then the tens. If the ones add up to less than ten, we write that number in the ones place of the answer and there is no carry. This method gives correct answers for two-digit and larger numbers. Repeat with real objects and worksheets until the process becomes natural.

Example: 275 + 368. Ones: 5 + 8 = 13, write 3 carry 1. Tens: 7 + 6 + 1 = 14, write 4 carry 1. Hundreds: 2 + 3 + 1 = 6. So answer 643. Use place value blocks (hundreds flats, ten rods, one cubes) to show exchanging ten ones for a ten and ten tens for a hundred. This visual helps children see why carrying moves left. Practice with neat columns and encourage checking by estimation or adding numbers in different order to confirm the result.
After finding an answer, children should check if it looks right. Two simple checks are estimation and reverse addition. Estimation: round numbers to the nearest ten and add to see if the answer is close. For example, 47 + 38 ≈ 50 + 40 = 90; the exact answer 85 is close. This tells us the sum is reasonable. Reverse addition: add the numbers in a different order or add the result minus one number to get the other number. For small numbers, you can subtract one addend from the sum to check the other addend.
Another check: use a number line to count forwards from the larger number by the smaller number and see if you land at the answer. Counting objects again or using place value blocks for the result is also good. Encourage neat writing and carrying marks so checking is easy. These checks help find careless mistakes like misplacing a digit or forgetting a carry. Make checking a regular habit when practising sums.
Word problems place addition in a real situation so children learn why carrying is useful. Begin by reading the problem slowly and underlining the numbers that must be added. Regular practice with simple stories builds confidence in picking numbers, performing carrying, and answering clearly.
Consistent practice helps children become confident with carrying. Use short daily exercises: a few column sums with and without carrying each day. Begin with concrete items—beads, cubes or sticks—so pupils can see ten ones change into one ten. Games and timed challenges make practice enjoyable: for example, roll dice and add the results, noting whenever a carry happens. Mix oral practice, written worksheets and group activities to keep interest high. Encourage students to explain each step aloud; teaching someone else helps learning.
Common mistakes include misaligning digits, forgetting to add the carry, writing the carry under the line instead of above the next column, and adding tens before ones. To prevent these, teach a clear order: align, add ones, write ones, carry if needed, then add tens including carry. Give students a simple checklist to follow for every sum. Show examples of wrong work and ask pupils to identify and correct the errors; this trains careful checking. Use estimation as a habit to spot unlikely answers quickly. Finally, praise neat work and correct methods so children develop good habits that will help with subtraction, multiplication and later arithmetic.
