What is a pattern?
A pattern is something that repeats in a regular way. We see patterns in colours, shapes and numbers. In number patterns, numbers follow a rule. The rule tells how to get from one number to the next. For example, when we count by ones, the rule is: add 1 each time. When we clap twice and then stamp, we have a repeating pattern in actions. When we make number patterns, we look for what comes next.
Children can find patterns in songs, floor tiles, and rows of trees. We learn to name the rule, like "add 2" or "start at 5 and add 10." Saying the rule helps us continue the pattern. We can also make our own patterns using pencils, blocks or drawings. Try making a pattern that repeats every two or three items. Patterns help our brain to notice order and to make good guesses about what comes next.
Counting in order (1s)
Counting by ones is the most basic number pattern and a skill children use every day. When we count by ones we move forward one number at a time. We can start at 0, 1 or any other number and keep adding one to find the next number. This helps us know what comes after and what comes before a number. For example, after 7 comes 8; before 7 comes 6. Using fingers, toys, beads or blocks and pointing to each item while saying the number helps make counting real and easy to understand. Teachers often use a number line and ask children to move one step for each count so the idea of a single step becomes clear.
Practice counting in small groups such as five or ten objects so children learn to say numbers in order. Ask questions like: "If you have 4 apples and you add one more, how many now?" Encourage children to say the rule in words: "add one". Also show that counting by ones helps to check answers in addition and subtraction: 3 + 1 = 4 and 4 - 1 = 3. Make short games where children race to count ten blocks or place stickers on numbers in order. This repeated play helps the child remember number names and their order and makes future work with larger steps (like counting by twos or tens) much easier.
Counting by twos
Counting by twos is the pattern where we add two each time. Children often learn this pattern using pairs of objects like shoes, socks or gloves. Start with 0, then 2, 4, 6, 8 and say the numbers aloud while grouping objects in twos. This helps children see that every second number is even. You can also start from 1 to get odd numbers: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9. Using a number line, children make jumps of two steps which makes the rule "add 2" easy to see.
Many classroom activities help practice counting by twos. Use bead strings and group beads in pairs, or stamp two fingers on paper each time you count. A hundreds chart coloured every second column makes the pattern visible: all even numbers line up. Ask children to fill blanks like 2, __, 6 by thinking "2 add 2 is 4". Explain that counting by twos speeds up counting and is useful when you want to count pairs quickly. Play a walking game where the child takes two steps and counts aloud to make the pattern active and fun. Repeat this practice so children can both say and write the sequence correctly and can explain the rule in words.
Counting by fives and tens
Counting by fives and tens helps children count faster when there are many items. For counting by fives, move from 5 to 10 to 15 to 20, each time adding 5. Use the five fingers on one hand as a helpful tool: each finger can stand for five when counting objects in groups. For counting by tens, each step adds 10: 10, 20, 30, 40. Tens are easy to see because these numbers end in zero. Teachers use groups of ten blocks or bundles of sticks to show how five or ten items make one group and make counting faster.
Use a chart or an object tray to make groups of five or ten and ask children to count groups rather than single objects. For money practice, counting five-rupee coins or ten-rupee notes helps children see real-life use. Show patterns on a hundred chart: every fifth number shares a visual place, and numbers in a column differ by tens. Give exercises where the child fills in missing numbers in 5s or 10s, for example 15, __, 25 (add 5 gives 20). Make simple games: clap five times each round and count by fives, or jump ten small steps and call out tens. Regular practice builds confidence and prepares learners for multiplication in later classes.
Repeating patterns with shapes and colours
Many patterns use shapes and colours rather than numbers. A repeating pattern has a small part that repeats again and again. For example, red-blue-red-blue is a simple repeating pattern with two items. Other patterns might have three items that repeat: circle-square-triangle, circle-square-triangle. Children learn to find the repeating unit and then continue the pattern. Making and reading these patterns builds both creative and logical thinking.
Practice by using beads, stickers, crayons or blocks. Ask a child to make a pattern and ask a friend to continue it. Encourage naming the rule: "repeat red, then blue" or "one circle then two squares." Use picture strips or drawing exercises where the child colours the next three items correctly. Sometimes patterns change size or repeat with small variations; explain how to look carefully for the repeating block. These activities also help with fine motor skills as children place beads or colour shapes. Teachers can mix shapes and colours to make longer patterns so that children learn patience and attention to detail while having fun.
Missing numbers in a pattern
Sometimes a number pattern has missing numbers. We find the missing ones by using the rule of the pattern. If the rule is add 2 and the sequence is 2, __, 6, then we add 2 to 2 to get 4 and fill the blank. If the rule is add 1 and sequence is __, 5, 6, we see that the missing number is 4. Practise fills confidence and careful thinking.
Use number lines, counting objects, or simple subtraction to check answers. Teach children to look at two or three numbers to spot the rule. Ask them to write the rule in words before filling blanks. Some boxes can have more than one missing number, for example 3, __, __, 9 with rule add 3 gives 3, 6, 9, 12. Checking at the end by repeating the rule helps avoid mistakes. These exercises prepare children for simple problem solving in daily life.
Using a number line and charts
A number line is a very helpful picture for showing order and counting. It is a straight line with numbers placed at equal spaces. Children learn to use it to move forward by one step or by larger steps like two, five or ten. For example, to count by twos a child can make jumps of two on the number line and say each number aloud. A hundred chart is a square table with numbers from 1 to 100 arranged in rows. It makes patterns easy to see because numbers that are ten apart fall in the same column. Colouring every second number or every fifth number makes the pattern clear at a glance.
Make a simple number line from 0 to 20 in class and practise many kinds of jumps. Ask children to show what happens when you start at 3 and add 2 three times. Use the hundred chart to find what number is 10 more or 5 more than a given number. Teachers can ask students to colour all even numbers or to circle every tenth number. These visual tools help children check answers and understand the meaning of adding or subtracting steps. Encourage drawing and using these charts for practice at home too, because seeing the pattern makes remembering and explaining the rule easier.
Patterns in daily life and games
Patterns are all around us and children can find them in many daily activities. Look for patterns in clothes, bead necklaces, floor tiles, the days of the week, or the steps of a dance. When you set the table with plates in a repeat order or clap a repeated rhythm, you are making a pattern. Teachers and parents can point these out and ask children to continue the pattern or make their own. This connects school learning to real life and makes the idea of patterns natural and fun.
Use play to teach patterns: ask a child to put toys in the order car, doll, car, doll and then continue the line. Use food items like bananas and apples to make number patterns by grouping and counting. In games, ask children to take two steps forward then one step back and repeat; this shows a movement pattern that can be counted. Story problems that use small numbers and clear rules make patterns meaningful—for instance, a train with two red and one blue carriage repeating. These hands-on activities build attention, memory and prediction skills while making learning enjoyable and useful for daily tasks.
