What is weight?

Learning about weight helps children decide how to carry things, how to pack their school bags and how to compare different items.
How do we notice weight?
We notice weight by lifting, supporting or holding items. A heavier object needs more strength to lift and often makes our arm go down first when we hold two things. A lighter object needs less effort and feels easy to carry. We use words such as heavy, heavier, heaviest, light, lighter, lightest, and equal to describe these feelings. Practise the words often so children learn to say full sentences like, 'This book is heavier than that notebook.'
Why do we learn weight?
Understanding weight is a first step to measurement. It helps children compare objects in everyday life — for example, choosing which bag they can carry alone or understanding that a box that looks big may be light if it is empty. This early learning becomes the base for later lessons where we measure weight using standard units like grams and kilograms.
How to compare by lifting
Comparing by lifting is a simple and useful skill. To compare two objects, hold one in each hand and notice which hand feels heavier or which hand goes down first. The side that drops a little usually holds the heavier item. If both hands stay at the same level and feel the same, the objects are equal in weight. This method uses our senses and muscle strength to make a fair comparison without any tool.

What is a pan balance?
A pan balance is a simple tool with a beam and two pans that hang at either end. It helps us compare the weight of two things fairly because both objects are placed on pans at the same time. When the pans are at the same height, the objects weigh the same. If one pan goes down, that side is heavier. This makes the balance a very clear way to see differences in weight without guessing.
How to use it step by step:
1) Place the balance on a flat table so it does not wobble. 2) Put object A on the left pan and object B on the right pan. 3) Watch the beam: if the left pan goes down, object A is heavier; if the right pan goes down, object B is heavier; if the beam stays level, both objects have equal weight. 4) Remove the objects and try different pairs to compare more items.
Learning from the balance:
The pan balance teaches careful work. Children learn to place objects gently and to wait and watch the beam. They also learn to record results: 'Left pan down = left is heavier.' 1) Choose a set of identical small blocks or stones. 2) Put the object to be measured on one pan of the balance. 3) Add one block at a time to the other pan until the beam becomes level. 4) Count the number of blocks used and write it down. Say, 'The toy weighs four blocks.' Always use the same type of block so results are fair and repeatable.
