If someone changes their answer, erase or cross out correctly and fix the tally so totals stay right. How to make a bar graph: Start with organised counts from your list or tallies. Draw two straight lines to form the axes: a horizontal axis for categories (for example, Red, Blue, Green) and a vertical axis for numbers (0, 1, 2, 3...). Choose equal steps on the number axis, usually 1, and write numbers clearly. For each category draw a bar up to the number that matches the count. Keep bars the same width and leave small spaces between them. Write a clear title above the graph and label both axes.
Using bar graphs: Bar graphs answer questions like which category has the most or least, and how many more one category has than another. For Class 2 choose simple numbers and use colours to make bars easy to read. When you draw by hand, use a ruler for straight bars and colour each bar differently. Bar graphs are a useful step from pictographs toward more formal charts in later classes.
What is a table? A table arranges information in rows and columns so data look neat and easy to read. How to read a table: First read the title to know what the table is about. Then follow a row left to right to find the number for a category, or follow a column top to bottom to see all the numbers in that column. If you need the total, add the numbers in a column carefully. When writing a table, keep numbers in the right boxes and write labels clearly so others can read your work.
Making and checking tables: Make a table from your tallies or pictograph by writing each category and its count in the correct box. Check totals by counting again or adding the column numbers. Use tables to answer questions like 'How many children like apples?' or 'How many more like mango than banana?' Practise making small tables with classroom data such as number of crayons, favourite games or pets to build confidence in reading organised information.
Comparing data means seeing which numbers are larger, smaller or the same. Use simple words: 'most' means the largest number, 'least' means the smallest number, and 'equal' means the same. Look at a pictograph or bar graph and find the tallest bar or the row with the most pictures to spot the 'most'. The smallest bar or fewest pictures show the 'least'.
Using numbers to compare: Say '5 is more than 3' and '2 is less than 4'. You can write these ideas as A > B or A < B, but for Class 2 it is enough to say the words. To find 'how many more', subtract the smaller number from the larger number. For example, if 6 children like mango and 3 like banana, then 6 − 3 = 3, so three more children like mango.
Describing trends in words: Practice writing short sentences that describe the data: 'Most children like mango', 'Fewest children have birds', or 'Apples and oranges are equal'. Use your graphs or tables to check the statement. These skills help students explain what they see and prepare them for longer data activities in higher classes. Encourage children to use counting and simple subtraction to support their words.
