How the hands behave: The minute hand moves steadily around the clock. When it moves from 12 back to 12, one hour has passed. As the minute hand moves, the hour hand moves slowly from one number to the next; when the minute hand reaches 12 again the hour hand will point exactly to the next hour. The second hand (if present) moves faster and counts the seconds between minutes.
Why we learn the parts: Knowing these names helps you talk about time correctly. For example, when the minute hand is at 12 and the short hand points at 9, we say '9 o'clock'. When the minute hand is at 6, we say 'half past' the hour. Learning the parts also prepares you to read digital clocks and follow timetables. Practice by pointing to each hand and saying its name aloud, and by drawing simple clock faces and labelling the hands.
What 'o'clock' means: When the minute hand points straight up to the 12, it means there are zero minutes past the hour. We say the number shown by the hour hand and add the words 'o'clock'. This gives times like '1 o'clock', '2 o'clock' and so on. O'clock times are the simplest to read on an analogue clock.
How to check the hour hand: At an exact o'clock the short hour hand will point exactly at a number. If the hour hand is between numbers, it is not exactly o'clock and we must say minutes past the hour. You can practise by setting a paper clock to each o'clock time and saying the name aloud.
Using o'clock in daily life: Many daily events use o'clock: school starts at 8 o'clock, assembly at 9 o'clock, lunch at 12 o'clock. When the minute hand is at 12 but the hour hand has not reached the next number, use the lower number for o'clock. For example, when the hour hand points at 7 and minute hand at 12, say '7 o'clock'. Also practise matching analogue o'clock with digital displays such as 07:00 or 7:00 so children learn both styles.
Meaning of half past: 'Half past' means thirty minutes after the hour. On an analogue clock the minute hand points to the 6 when it is half past. The hour hand will be exactly halfway between the starting hour and the next hour. For example, at half past 2 the hour hand stands between 2 and 3 and the minute hand is at 6.
How to say half past: Use the hour that has begun, not the one coming next. So when the hour hand is between 4 and 5 and the minute hand is at 6 we say 'half past 4' (or 4:30). This can be practiced by moving the minute hand from 12 down to 6 and watching how the hour hand moves from one number towards the next.
Counting to thirty: Children should count the minute ticks by fives: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30. The sixth number (30) shows half an hour. Use everyday examples: 'The class will start at half past nine' means 9:30. Make paper clocks and ask students to draw hands for different half past times, and to match half past times with digital displays like 3:30 or 11:30. Practise also how long until the next hour: from 4:30 it is 30 minutes until 5:00.
Quarter of an hour: A clock face is divided into four quarters. Each quarter is 15 minutes. When the minute hand is at 3, it is 15 minutes past the hour and we say 'quarter past'. When the minute hand is at 9, it is 15 minutes before the next hour and we say 'quarter to'.
How to read these times: For quarter past, use the current hour: e.g., minute hand at 3 and hour hand just after 2 is 'quarter past 2' or 2:15. For quarter to, name the coming hour: e.g., minute hand at 9 and hour hand just before 5 is 'quarter to 5' or 4:45. Teach children to count by fives on the numbers: 1=5, 2=10, 3=15, and so on.
Practice ideas: Give students cards with times written and ask them to place minute and hour hands on paper clocks. Use common activities to practise: 'The short movie begins at quarter past three' or 'Dinner is at quarter to eight'. Practice changing between saying the time as minutes (2:15) and using words ('quarter past two').
Minute numbers on the clock: Each number on the clock shows five minutes when we count from the 12. Start at 12 and count 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and continue around to 60. This helps children read times like 4:20 or 6:55 by looking at where the minute hand points.
Reading minutes past the hour: If the minute hand points to 4, we say '20 minutes past' the hour. For example, if the hour hand is near 3 and the minute hand is at 4, we say '20 minutes past 3' or 3:20. If the minute hand points to 11, it is 55 minutes past the hour; we can also say '5 minutes to' the next hour.
Useful counting practice: Chant minutes in fives while moving the minute hand around a teacher-made clock. Play games: ask students what time it is when the minute hand points at different numbers. Teach that 12 can mean 0 minutes or 60 minutes depending on how you use it. Use both analogue faces and digital times to show the same moment (e.g., minute hand at 2 with hour hand at 7 means 7:10 or 'ten minutes past seven').
How digital clocks show time: Digital clocks display numbers for hours and minutes, usually separated by a colon, for example 07:30 or 3:15. The first part shows the hour and the second part shows minutes. Many classroom clocks, phones and microwaves use this style. It is important to match a digital time to an analogue clock so students understand both displays.
Reading the digits: Read the hour number first and then the minutes. For example 6:45 is 'six forty-five' and is the same moment as an analogue clock showing the minute hand at 9 and the hour hand just before 7. Some digital clocks use two digits for minutes even when minutes are less than 10, e.g., 8:05, so children should learn to read zeros in minutes correctly.
Writing time: Teach students to write time in two ways: words (for example 'quarter past five') and digits (5:15). Practice converting: give an analogue clock and ask students to write the digital time, and give a digital time and ask for a drawing of the analogue hands. Explain simple rules: o'clock = :00, half past = :30, quarter past = :15, quarter to = :45. This helps students read timetables and set alarms.
Words for parts of the day: We describe the day with simple words that children already use. 'Morning' is when people wake up and go to school, usually from about 5:00 or 6:00 until 12:00. 'Noon' or 'midday' is exactly around 12:00 when the sun is highest. 'Afternoon' is the time after noon until early evening. 'Evening' is when the sun begins to set and people have dinner. 'Night' is the late part of the day when it becomes dark and we sleep.
Using AM and PM: In 12-hour clocks we use AM for morning times (for example, 7:00 AM is morning) and PM for afternoon and evening times (for example, 7:00 PM is evening). At Class 3 level children should learn which daily activities happen in which part of the day: breakfast in the morning, school in morning/afternoon, play in the evening, sleep at night.
Practical classroom activities: Ask students to list their own routines and place them into morning, noon, afternoon, evening or night. Use pictures for younger learners: show a sun rising picture for morning, a bright sun for noon, and moon stars for night. Practise sentences like 'I eat lunch in the afternoon' or 'I go to bed at night' so pupils learn both the words and the times they represent.
Comparing two times: To say which time is earlier or later, first check the hour. The time with the smaller hour number is earlier (for example 3:00 is before 5:00). If the hours are the same, compare minutes: 3:10 is earlier than 3:20. Teach children to use words like 'earlier than', 'later than', 'before' and 'after' when comparing times.
Finding how long something lasts (duration): Duration tells how much time passes between a start and an end. For short activities that happen within the same hour, count the minutes on the clock or use addition and subtraction. Example: if playtime starts at 10:15 and ends at 10:45, count from 15 to 45 to find 30 minutes. For activities across hours, add minutes to reach the next hour and continue counting.
Simple methods children can use: Use a number line of minutes or move the minute hand on a paper clock to show time passing. Teach the basic formula duration = end time − start time for moments within one day. Use class routines for practice: how long is assembly, how long is lunch? Also practise finding end time: if a lesson starts at 1:20 and lasts 40 minutes, show how to add minutes to find it ends at 2:00.
What a timetable shows: A timetable is a list or table of activities with their start times. Schools use timetables to show subjects, break time and lunch. Buses and trains use timetables to show departure and arrival times. Reading a timetable helps children plan their day and know what to do at each time.
How to read and use one: Look at the time column and read each time in order from early to late. Check whether times are written in words ('half past nine') or digits (9:30). To find how long an activity lasts, subtract the start time from the next event's start time, or count minutes on a clock face if times are close together. Encourage pupils to copy a simple timetable and draw clocks beside each time to match analogue and digital formats.
Class activities: Give students a sample school timetable and ask questions: 'What time does PE start?' 'How long is lunch?' Ask children to make their own timetable for a school day or a weekend, writing both digital and word forms.
