If a count is not an exact multiple of the picture value, draw full pictures for the whole number and use a small mark or write the extra number. You can also use stickers or stamps instead of hand-drawn pictures. Always write the key and the total number of respondents so that anyone reading the pictograph can check the data.
Pictographs teach children to connect pictures and numbers and to read data without only using arithmetic. They also allow comparisons: rows with more pictures show larger numbers.
