Space means the huge area outside Earth where we see the Moon, Sun, stars and planets. It is not the sky we see during the day; it goes far beyond the blue sky and air. In space there is almost no air and it is very cold in many places. We say that space is empty because there are only a few tiny bits of dust and gas between stars and planets.
When we talk about space words, we mean simple words that help us tell stories and facts about the sky and beyond. These words are easy to learn and fun to use. Learning them helps children understand books, pictures and videos about space. We can also draw pictures of the Sun, Moon, stars and planets to practise these words.
Children should try saying words aloud, drawing them, and using them in short sentences. Teachers and parents can ask questions like, "What do you see in the night sky?" or "Can you point to the Moon?" This way, children link the words to real things they already know.
Planets
Children can learn a few simple facts about some common planets. Mercury is the closest to the Sun and very hot during the day. Venus looks bright in the sky and is covered by thick clouds. Earth has water, air and life. Mars appears red because of rusty soil. Jupiter is the largest planet and has bands of clouds. Saturn is famous for its rings made of ice and rock. Uranus and Neptune are cold and far away, and they look bluish.
It helps to use pictures, model balls and cards with names to remember these facts. Make simple sentences for practice: 'Mars is red,' or 'Saturn has rings.' Asking children to sort planet cards from nearest to farthest or to match a picture to a short fact makes learning active. Teachers should encourage speaking the names clearly and writing one-line facts about each planet to build confidence in using space words.
The Sun
Stars
To help children learn, teachers can use short rhymes or flashcards: 'Sun gives day, stars give night.' Activities include drawing the Sun and many stars, saying one sentence about why the Sun is important, and talking about why stars look small. Simple comparisons—’The Sun is close, stars are far’—make the idea clear. Practising these sentences aloud helps with vocabulary, pronunciation and basic science understanding for Class 4 students.
The Moon
Start with the simple phases: the new moon, when the Moon is not visible; the crescent, a thin curved sliver; the half moon (also called quarter), where one half looks lit; the gibbous, where more than half is lit; and the full moon, when the whole face appears round and bright. The Moon does not make its own light – it shines because the Sun lights its surface. Its shadows and bright parts depend on how the Sun, Earth and Moon are placed.
A good classroom activity is a Moon diary. Children draw the Moon each night for a week or more and label the phase. They can write one sentence for each drawing, for example, 'Tonight the Moon is a crescent.' Teachers should explain slowly, use pictures and encourage children to ask questions. Simple games like matching phase cards or arranging phase pictures in order help children remember names and order of the Moon phases. This activity combines observation, speaking and writing practice with space vocabulary.
Rockets
Spacecraft
Children should know simple words: 'launch' means to start the flight, 'orbit' means going round a body like Earth, and 'mission' means a journey with a purpose. Teachers can describe a typical mission step by step: prepare, count down, launch, reach orbit, do work, and return. Classroom activities such as sequencing picture cards of a launch, labelling parts of a rocket, or telling a short launch story help students use the vocabulary in real sentences. These hands-on tasks make learning about rockets and spacecraft both interesting and clear for young learners.
Astronauts
Life inside a spacecraft is different from life on Earth. There is little gravity in orbit, so astronauts float. Because of this they sleep in bags, use Velcro to hold items in place, and drink from special pouches. Food is often dried or packed in small containers. They also exercise daily to keep muscles strong because bones and muscles can weaken without Earth’s full gravity. Astronauts do experiments such as growing plants or testing how materials behave in weightless conditions. These experiments teach scientists useful things for Earth too.
Children should learn short facts and practise describing them in one or two sentences: 'An astronaut wears a space suit.' or 'Astronauts float because gravity is low.' Teachers can use role-play, showing pictures of suits, or simple demonstrations (floating a small toy in a bowl of water to show support) to make the ideas clear. Discussing how astronauts feel and work helps build empathy and interest in science and language together.
Telescopes
Using a telescope lets us learn about the Moon’s craters, the rings of Saturn and the bands on Jupiter. Telescopes also help find new stars and study how stars change. It is important to follow safety rules: never point a telescope at the Sun without an adult and a proper solar filter, because sunlight can hurt the eyes. Binoculars can be used for basic sky watching but they do not magnify as much as telescopes.
Classroom activities include making a simple cardboard model of a telescope to practise holding it steady, looking at pictures taken through telescopes and writing one sentence about each picture, or drawing what a student would like to see in the sky. Teachers can organise a guided observation evening with parents where children bring a drawing and describe what they hope to find. These practical tasks connect words like 'telescope', 'observe' and 'magnify' to real seeing, drawing and writing work for Class 4 children.
After learning many space words, children should practise using them in sentences and short stories. Good sentences help others understand our ideas. A simple sentence often has a subject, a verb and an object: for example, 'The rocket launched.' or 'The Moon is bright.' Combine two short sentences with 'and' or 'but' to make a longer sentence, such as 'The rocket launched and the crowd cheered.'
Start by describing pictures with one or two sentences. Use picture prompts like a rocket, an astronaut, or the Moon to spark ideas. Then ask children to add detail: where, when or how. For instance, 'At night the children watched the full Moon.' Practice writing a small paragraph of three or four sentences about a space trip, using space words learned in the unit. Encourage correct capital letters for names (Earth, Moon) and full stops at the end of sentences.
Teachers can set simple tasks: write three sentences about a planet, make a mini-comic strip with one line under each picture, or tell a short spoken story to the class. Peer reading and gentle correction help improve spelling and sentence structure. These activities make language learning active, build confidence, and link vocabulary to creative thinking about space.
