What are place names and how do we count?
When we write numbers, each digit sits in a special position. The position tells us its value. Starting from the right the first position is Ones (units), the second is Tens, the third is Hundreds, the fourth is Thousands and the fifth is Ten Thousands. These place names are important because a digit '2' in the tens place means twenty, but the same digit '2' in the thousands place means two thousand.
Counting in groups:
Ten ones make one ten. Ten tens make one hundred. Ten hundreds make one thousand. Counting this way helps us jump from small numbers to larger ones: after 9, 10 comes, after 99, 100 comes, after 999, 1000 comes. For children it helps to say aloud the place name as you count: for example, in 3,562 say 'three thousand five hundred sixty-two' while pointing to each digit to remember the place.

To read a number correctly start from the left and say the digits with their group names where needed. Use a place-value chart when numbers are long: write the digits in boxes labelled TenThousands, Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, Ones. Understanding face value:
The face value of a digit is simply the digit itself. It does not change no matter where the digit appears in a number. For example, the face value of '4' is 4 whether it is in 4,321 or 34,210. Teaching children to say the face value first helps separate the idea of the digit from its position.

What is expanded form?
Expanded form shows a number as the sum of each digit multiplied by its place value. It helps students see what each digit contributes to the total. For example, 4,321 written in expanded form is 4,000 + 300 + 20 + 1. This makes clear that the '4' stands for four thousand, the '3' for three hundred, and so on.
How to write expanded form step by step:
1. Use the place-value chart to find the place value of each digit. 2. Multiply each digit by the value of its place (ones, tens, hundreds...). 3. Write the sum of these values separated by plus signs. If a place has zero you can skip writing '+ 0', or include it as a learning aid. Practise converting between standard form, words and expanded form until it becomes automatic.
Why it is useful:
Expanded form helps when adding or subtracting because you can operate on each place separately. It also helps with comparing numbers: the largest place-value term often decides which number is bigger. Ordering a list of numbers:
To order numbers from smallest to largest (ascending) or largest to smallest (descending), line up the numbers by place value using the place-value chart or by writing them in expanded form. Compare the highest place first and move right until you find a difference. This systematic method avoids mistakes that come from only looking at one or two digits.
Tips and practice:
Teach children to check digits place by place. For numbers that start with the same digits, look at the next place until you find a difference. Using expanded form can make the comparison visual (for example 14,300 = 10,000 + 4,000 + 300 compared with 14,250 = 10,000 + 4,000 + 200; the 300 > 200 so 14,300 is larger). Regular practice with varied examples makes this skill quick and reliable.
What is rounding and when do we use it?
Rounding gives a simpler nearby number so we can estimate quickly. It is useful when doing rough calculations, estimating money or distance, or checking answers. We round a number to the nearest ten, nearest hundred, or nearest thousand by looking at the digit immediately to the right of the place we round to.
Rules for rounding:
To round to the nearest ten: look at the ones digit. If it is 0–4, keep the tens digit the same and make ones 0 (round down). If it is 5–9, add 1 to the tens digit and make ones 0 (round up). To round to the nearest hundred: look at the tens digit; 0–4 means round down, 5–9 means round up. To round to the nearest thousand: look at the hundreds digit and follow the same rule.
Practical steps and examples:
Always say which place you are rounding to. When rounding, change all digits to the right of the chosen place to zero. For example, to round 6,348 to the nearest ten look at 8 (ones) and round up to 6,350. To round the same number to the nearest hundred look at 4 (tens) and round down to 6,300. Use a number line or mark the midpoint to see why numbers with digit 5 or more go up. Practice with many numbers to build confidence.

A number line is a straight line with equal marks showing numbers in order. For large numbers, choose a sensible scale (for example marks every 100 or every 1,000) so the line stays clear. A number line helps children see which numbers are larger, how far numbers are from each other, and where a rounded value lies.
How to place numbers:
Decide the start and end points, for example 12,000 to 13,000. Mark equal intervals (every 100 or 200). To locate a number like 12,450, count the intervals from 12,000 or find the midpoint between 12,000 and 13,000 and mark accordingly. This visual method shows exactly how close a number is to given round numbers and helps with rounding decisions.
Everyday uses:
Use real-life examples such as town populations, money amounts or scores. Ask children to put these numbers on a number line, compare them and round them for estimation. This connects classroom learning to the world: for example, showing that 12,345 people live in town A and 9,780 in town B helps them see differences clearly on a line and understand which values are closer to 10,000 or 12,000.
