Measurement is a way to find out how big, heavy or long something is, or how much it can hold, and how long an activity lasts. We compare a thing with a standard unit. Standard units are the same for everyone, so people can share and understand measurements easily. In daily life we use length to know how far or how tall something is, mass to know how heavy it is, capacity to know how much liquid it can hold and time to know when events happen and how long they last. Learning measurement helps us solve real problems like buying fruit, cooking, and telling the time. Good measurement needs the right tool and careful reading. We often estimate first, then measure to check. Estimation saves time and helps in checking whether a result is reasonable. While measuring, hold the tool steadily, start from the correct zero point, and read the marks correctly. Record the number and the unit together, for example 30 cm or 2 kg. Always choose the unit that makes the number easy to work with: use metres for classroom length and centimetres for pencil length.
Length is how long or tall something is. The most useful standard units for length in Class 4 are the metre (m) and the centimetre (cm). One metre is divided into 100 centimetres. We use metres for larger things like a classroom or a road, and centimetres for small things like a pencil or a book. A ruler usually shows centimetres while a measuring tape shows metres and centimetres. When you measure, put the object along the ruler starting at zero. Read to the nearest small mark; each small mark usually shows one millimetre, but for Class 4 we read centimetres and half centimetres. If a length lies between marks, estimate the fraction. Always write the number with the unit, for example 85 cm or 1 m 25 cm. To record many measurements, write them in a clear list. When comparing lengths, arrange objects from smallest to largest. Mass tells us how heavy an object is. We use kilogram (kg) for heavier objects like a bag of rice and gram (g) for lighter objects like a banana. One kilogram equals 1000 grams. Kitchen weighing scales, bathroom scales and balance scales are common tools to find mass. For balance scales, we place the object on one side and standard weights on the other until both sides balance. For a spring scale, the pointer shows the mass on a dial. When recording, write the number and unit such as 2 kg or 350 g. For masses more than 1 kg, you can write mixed units: 1 kg 250 g. When comparing mass, heavier objects have more mass. For Class 4, practise converting between kg and g, adding and subtracting mass, and estimating which everyday items are close to 100 g, 500 g, or 1 kg. Capacity is how much a container can hold. Common units are litre (L) and millilitre (mL). One litre equals 1000 millilitres. We use litres for bigger bottles and buckets and millilitres for small medicine cups or juice packs. Measuring jugs and marked bottles show these units. When measuring, put the container on a flat surface and read the mark at eye level to avoid error. Record the amount with the unit, like 1 L or 250 mL. For combinations, write 1 L 200 mL as 1200 mL if needed for calculation. When filling or pouring, slow pouring gives more accurate measurement. Capacity also helps in cooking: recipes use millilitres and litres for liquids. Practice estimating how many glasses of water fit in a 1 L bottle or how many millilitres are in a teaspoon (approximately 5 mL). Time is when things happen and how long they last. The basic units are seconds (s), minutes (min) and hours (h). Sixty seconds make one minute and sixty minutes make one hour. Children learn to read both analogue clocks (with hour and minute hands) and digital clocks (which show numbers). To read an analogue clock, see where the short hand points for the hour and the long hand for the minutes. Each number on the clock face stands for five minutes. For example, if the long hand is on 3 it is 15 minutes past the hour. On digital clocks, time appears like 7:30 or 14:05. Practice telling time to the nearest five minutes and then to the nearest minute. Use time to plan daily schedules: how long to study, time for games, or length of a TV program. For adding and subtracting time, convert hours to minutes or minutes to seconds when needed. Estimating durations helps in arriving on time and organising activities.
Converting means changing a measurement from one unit to another. For Class 4 we convert between metres and centimetres, kilograms and grams, litres and millilitres, and between hours, minutes and seconds. Use the simple facts: 1 m = 100 cm, 1 kg = 1000 g, 1 L = 1000 mL, 1 h = 60 min, 1 min = 60 s. To convert from a larger to a smaller unit, multiply. For example, to change 3 m to cm: 3 × 100 = 300 cm. To convert from smaller to larger unit, divide. For example, 500 g to kg: 500 ÷ 1000 = 0.5 kg or 500 g = 0 kg 500 g. When converting mixed units, convert all to the same small unit, do the calculation, then change back if needed. Practise with everyday questions: how many centimetres in 2 m 30 cm, or how many millilitres in 2 L 250 mL. Conversions help in adding and comparing measurements that use the same kind of quantity but different units.
Perimeter is the distance around a closed shape. For straight-sided shapes like rectangles and squares, add the lengths of all sides to find the perimeter. For a rectangle, perimeter = 2 × (length + breadth). Area tells how much surface a shape covers; for Class 4 we begin with simple ideas, using square centimetres to cover a flat shape. To estimate area, count how many 1 cm by 1 cm squares fit inside a shape drawn on graph paper. For rectangles, area = length × breadth when measured in the same units. Use rulers to measure sides, then calculate the perimeter and area using addition and multiplication they already know. Practical activities include measuring the perimeter of a desk and finding the area of a book cover on squared paper. Understanding both helps in real life: perimeter for fence length and area for the size of carpets or mats. Always include the correct unit: cm for perimeter when sides are in cm, and cm2 for area when using square centimetres.
