Data means facts or pieces of information. When you count how many boys and girls are in a class, that number is data. When you ask your friends their favourite fruit, the answers you get are data. Data can be numbers or words. Numbers tell how many, and words name things.
We use data to learn about a group or a situation. For example, if you want to know which sport is most popular in your class, you collect data by asking each child. Data is useful because it helps us make decisions, find patterns, and show ideas clearly.
In this unit you will practise asking good questions, collecting answers carefully, and keeping the information neat. You will learn simple ways to record data so others can read it easily. You will also learn to draw pictures and graphs that make the data easy to understand at a glance.
Working with data teaches careful counting, neat recording, and clear thinking. These are useful skills in daily life and other school subjects.
Start a data task by asking a clear question. Good questions are short and ask about one thing. For example, 'Which fruit do you like best?' is better than 'What do you like?'. Decide who you will ask: your whole class, a group of friends, or family.
When you collect data, be fair and ask the same question to everyone. Write each answer just once so you do not forget it. If answers are many, you can keep a running list, or use tally marks as you ask. Say you ask 20 children about their favourite game; note each reply carefully.
Make sure each person understands the question. If someone does not know, you may skip them or ask again later. Keep the order neat so you can count easily later. After collecting, check your notes for mistakes.
Good collection gives reliable data. This step is important before you make tables or draw graphs. It helps you trust the results when you look for the most liked item or compare choices.
Tally marks are a quick way to record counts as you collect data. Use a straight line | for each item. For groups of five, draw four vertical lines and then a diagonal line across them: |||| and then cross with /. This group of five is easy to count at a glance.
Write tallies in a column beside the item name. When you finish collecting, convert tallies to numbers. For example, |||| / || means 5 + 2 = 7. Tallies are neat and reduce mistakes during counting.
Tally marks are best for small surveys and when you ask many people one by one. They help you see which answer is growing faster without adding every time. After making tallies, you can make a frequency table which gives the total number for each item.
Practise making tally marks carefully so that groups of five are clear. Keep the tally column straight and leave space to add more tallies if needed.
A frequency table lists each item and how often it was observed. After you use tally marks, write the number of tallies in a 'Frequency' column. The table has clear rows: one for each type of answer and one row for the total if needed.
To make a frequency table, first write the items down the left side. Then record tallies in the middle column and write the total number in the right column. The totals are easy to read and are used to draw graphs later.
Frequency tables help compare items. You can quickly see which has the highest number and which has the lowest. They are useful for both small and larger surveys and are the link between raw tallies and pictures or bar graphs.
Always check your table by adding the frequency column and seeing if it matches how many people you asked. A correct table makes the next steps simple and accurate.
Pictographs show data using pictures or symbols. Each picture stands for a number of items. We choose a scale such as 1 picture = 1 item or 1 picture = 2 items. The scale must be written below the pictograph so others know how to read it.
To make a pictograph, first use a frequency table. Draw a row for each item. Next, place the correct number of pictures for each frequency using the chosen scale. Use simple drawings like apples, stars, or dots. Label the pictograph with a title, and write the scale clearly.
Pictographs are easy to understand and attractive. They help young students compare numbers quickly. However, when numbers are large, use a scale so the drawing is not too big. For example, if 10 children like bananas, and 1 picture = 2 children, draw 5 banana pictures.
When you read a pictograph, multiply the number of pictures by the scale to find the true count. Always check the scale before answering questions from a pictograph.
Bar graphs use bars to show how many of each item there are. Draw a horizontal base line (x-axis) for the items and a vertical line (y-axis) for the numbers. Write the names of items along the x-axis and numbers along the y-axis. Choose a scale for the y-axis that fits your largest number.
To draw a bar, find the item's frequency and draw a rectangle above its name up to the correct number on the y-axis. Keep the width of all bars equal and leave small gaps between bars. Colour or shade the bars to make the graph clear. Give the graph a title and label both axes with names and units.
Bar graphs make comparison easy. You can see at once which item has the highest or lowest frequency. They are good for data that is counted and for presenting results to others in a neat way.
When you read a bar graph, check the scale on the y-axis before answering questions. Use the height of bars to compare and to find differences between numbers.
After making a pictograph or bar graph, we must read it to answer questions. Always look at the title, the labels, and the scale first. These tell you what the graph is about and how numbers are shown. Then find the item asked and read its height or count the pictures.
Common questions are: Which item has the most? Which has the least? How many more chose A than B? To answer 'most' or 'least', compare the heights of bars or the number of pictures. For 'how many more', subtract the smaller number from the larger one.
Also practise finding totals: add frequencies to find how many people were asked. Check your answers by going back to the table or tallies if unsure. Reading graphs helps in solving real problems like planning how many prizes are needed for winners or which book is most liked in the library.
Be careful: always use the scale correctly. Mistaking the scale will give wrong answers even if you read the graph neatly.
In a small project you will practise the whole process. Choose a simple question, for example ‘Which game do you play most?’ or ‘How many brothers or sisters do you have?’ Decide who to ask — the whole class is best. Make a plan: write the question clearly and prepare a tally sheet or answer sheet.
Collect data by asking every classmate and recording answers with tallies. After collecting, make a frequency table and check totals. Then represent the results as a pictograph or bar graph. Title your chart and write the scale if needed. Finally, write three sentences that tell what you learned: the most liked item, the least liked, and one other fact such as the difference between top two.
This project helps you use all the skills from the unit. It teaches planning, careful asking, neat recording, and clear presentation. Share your findings with the class and explain how you collected the data and what the graphs show. This builds confidence and shows that maths can explain real things in life.
