What changed recently
- Effective 11 June 2026: new rules for the higher-education study residence permit — work capped at 15 hours/week during semesters (unlimited June-August) until 2 semesters are completed; minimum study progress now required (37.5 credits in year 1, 45 credits/year after); permit holders must notify the Migration Agency of their address within 30 days of receiving the permit or moving. Watch out for
- Sweden charges tuition to all non-EU/EEA/Swiss students (free tuition ended in 2011) — tuition fee amounts are set per university/programme and were not centrally listed on the pages we opened; check the specific programme's page on universityadmissions.se.
- The first (international) admission round in mid-January is strongly recommended over the later April round — the later round's July decision timeline usually leaves too little time to get a residence permit before the semester starts.
- Since 11 June 2026, insufficient study progress (below 37.5 credits in year one / 45 credits/year after) can lead to the study residence permit being refused on renewal.
