MDS

The specialist degree for dentists, taken after a BDS and internship.

  • 3 years
  • Science (PCB)
  • via NEET-MDS

The specialist degree for dentists, taken after a BDS and internship. It trains you in one of the dental specialities — orthodontics, prosthodontics, endodontics, periodontics, oral surgery and others — for specialist practice, teaching in dental colleges, or hospital work. Seats are allotted on NEET-MDS rank.

Know this. An MDS from an expensive private college does not automatically pay back its fees — the dental market in big cities is crowded, and specialists compete with experienced general dentists who do the same procedures. Work out the full cost, the likely first-job pay and how long you will take to repay before choosing a private seat; a government seat in a less popular speciality or a year of preparation can be the better decision.

Getting in

Master of Dental Surgery

Who can apply

A recognised BDS degree from a university or institute in India, registration (provisional or permanent) with a State Dental Council, and a completed one-year compulsory rotatory internship in an approved dental college, as set out in the MDS Course Regulations 2017. The regulations also require a minimum NEET percentile — 50th for general, 45th for persons with locomotor disability of the lower limbs, and 40th for SC/ST/OBC — though the government has lowered this in some years.

How admission works

Admission to every MDS and PG dental diploma seat is on the merit list of the national PG dental entrance (NEET-MDS). The Medical Counselling Committee runs counselling for the 50% All India Quota seats in government dental colleges and for central and deemed institutions; states run counselling for the rest, including private colleges. Dental education is now overseen by the National Dental Commission, which replaced the Dental Council of India under the National Dental Commission Act, 2023 — the older DCI regulations continue until replaced.

Duration
3 years full-time (2 years for holders of a recognised PG diploma in the same speciality)
Entrance

  • Clinical training in your department with a required quota of treated cases
  • Didactic lectures, seminars, journal clubs and case presentations
  • Inter-departmental meetings and posting in allied departments

Is it you?

A good fit if

  • You want to be a specialist rather than a general dental practitioner
  • You plan to teach — dental college faculty posts require an MDS
  • You can get a government seat or can afford a private one without heavy debt
  • You enjoy detailed hands-on clinical work in one area
  • You are comfortable with fine motor work and long procedures under magnification

Think twice if

  • You are taking on large loans for a private seat in a speciality with a crowded local market
  • You would rather start practice now and build patients — many successful dentists do so with BDS
  • You are interested in management, public health or industry roles, where an MPH or MBA may fit better

The honest part

  • NEET-MDS competition is high, especially for orthodontics, prosthodontics and endodontics
  • The rules require a minimum quota of clinical cases and conference presentations to complete the course
  • Private-college fees are often the biggest single cost in a dentist's career
  • Teaching posts in private dental colleges pay less than many expect
  • Regulation is moving from DCI rules to the new National Dental Commission — watch for changes

What it costs

Government
Roughly ₹20,000–2 lakh a year at government dental colleges
Private
Roughly ₹5–25 lakh a year at private and deemed dental colleges, highest for orthodontics and prosthodontics
Help
PG dental students in many states receive a stipend; amounts differ by state and college. Check bonds and seat-leaving penalties in your state's counselling brochure.

Rough 2026 ranges to compare routes. Fees differ by college and state and change every year.

Or start work as

  • Consultant specialist (orthodontist, endodontist, oral surgeon, etc.) in dental chains and clinics
  • Senior lecturer / assistant professor in dental colleges
  • Dental surgeon in armed forces dental corps, railways, ESIC and state health services
  • Own specialist practice
  • Clinical research or dental product roles in industry

Starting pay

Roughly ₹40,000–1.2 lakh a month for early consultant or teaching roles; own practice income varies hugely and takes years to build. Orthodontics and implant-focused work tend to earn more over time; teaching salaries in private colleges are often modest.

Questions families ask

Who regulates dental education now?

The National Dental Commission, set up under the National Dental Commission Act, 2023, has taken over from the Dental Council of India. Its website still carries the older DCI regulations, including the MDS Course Regulations 2017.

Is the MDS three years?

Yes — three academic years full-time including the exam, and a maximum of six years to finish. Holders of a recognised PG diploma in the same speciality do two years.

Is MDS necessary to earn well as a dentist?

No. Many general dentists with strong clinical skills and good practice management earn well. MDS is necessary for teaching and for being recognised as a specialist.

Which speciality should I choose?

Choose by the daily work you enjoy and the local market. Orthodontics and prosthodontics are popular and expensive; public health dentistry and oral pathology lead more to teaching, research and government roles.

Can I practise abroad after MDS?

Most countries require their own licensing exams regardless of an Indian MDS. Check the specific country's dental board before planning around it.

Should I work for a year after BDS before attempting NEET-MDS?

Many dentists do. A year in a clinic or as a tutor in a dental college gives you income, clinical confidence and a clearer idea of which speciality you actually enjoy. The cost is that preparing while working is harder, so set fixed study hours and take the full-length mock tests seriously. If you are already scoring close to your target rank, it is usually better to prepare full-time for one focused attempt.
