Many Indian graduates go abroad for a master's, an MBA or a PhD — most often to the US, UK, Canada, Germany, Australia, Ireland and a growing list of other countries. This page is a short bridge: it helps you decide whether going abroad fits you, and then sends you to LLOS's study-abroad directory, which covers countries, universities, costs, exams and visas in detail.
Know this. The degree abroad is the easy part to buy; the job afterwards is not guaranteed. Before you apply, check three things for each country: the post-study work visa rules for your field, what graduates of that specific programme actually earn, and how long the loan will take to repay. LLOS's study-abroad directory at /education/study-abroad/paths/#after-graduation walks through this — start there rather than with an agent.
Getting in
Postgraduate study abroad — MS, MSc, MA, MBA, LL.M. and PhD outside India
Who can apply
A recognised bachelor's degree (some countries and programmes expect four years of undergraduate study, so a three-year Indian degree may need a master's or a bridging year first). Most programmes ask for an English test score (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo), and many US programmes ask for the GRE (master's and PhD) or GMAT/GRE (MBA). Requirements differ by university and are changing, so always read the programme page itself.
How admission works
There is no central counselling. You apply to each university separately, usually 9–15 months before the course starts, with transcripts, a statement of purpose, recommendation letters, test scores, a CV and sometimes a portfolio or interview. PhD admissions abroad (especially in the US) are usually funded and depend heavily on research fit and references. For the full step-by-step path — which exams, which countries, costs, scholarships and visas — use LLOS's study-abroad directory at /education/study-abroad/paths/#after-graduation.
- Duration
- Usually 1–2 years for a master's (1 year in the UK and much of Europe for taught master's; about 2 years for a US MS); 1–2 years for an MBA; 3–6 years for a PhD
What you study
- Depends on the programme: taught master's are coursework-heavy with a final project or dissertation
- US MS programmes: coursework plus a thesis or a non-thesis project option
- MBA: core management courses, electives, group projects and an internship
- PhD: coursework in the first one or two years (US) followed by research and a thesis
Specialisations: MS in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering · MSc in Finance, Business Analytics, Management · MBA · Public Health, Public Policy, Development Studies · LL.M. · Design, Architecture, Arts · Fully funded PhDs in sciences, engineering and social sciences
Is it you?
A good fit if
- You want to work abroad after studying, and the country has a realistic post-study work route for your field
- You have a strong academic or work record and can write a clear statement of purpose
- You can get funding (scholarship, assistantship, funded PhD) or can repay a loan without strain
- You are ready to live independently in a very different system
Think twice if
- You are borrowing heavily for a one-year degree at a little-known university only to 'go abroad'
- You plan to return to India immediately — a strong Indian master's (IIT, IISc, IIM, NLU) is often better value
- You have not checked the visa and work rules for the country you are considering
- You are choosing a country or agent because of advertisements rather than research
The honest part
- Visa and post-study work rules change often, sometimes mid-course
- Unfunded one-year master's in weak universities are the biggest financial risk
- Funded PhDs and assistantships exist but need strong grades, research and references
- Many agents are paid commissions by universities — their advice is not neutral
What it costs
- Government
- Public universities in Germany and some European countries charge low or no tuition, but living costs remain (roughly ₹8–12 lakh a year)
- Private
- Roughly ₹20–60 lakh or more in total for a master's in the US, UK, Canada or Australia, including living costs; top MBAs cost more
- Help
- Funded PhDs (tuition waiver plus stipend) are common in the US and Europe. Education loans with and without collateral are available from Indian banks and NBFCs — compare interest rates carefully. See the study-abroad directory for country-by-country costs.
Rough 2026 ranges to compare routes. Fees differ by college and state and change every year.
After this
Study next
Or start work as
- Software, data and engineering roles abroad through post-study work routes
- Research positions and postdocs after a PhD
- Consulting, finance and management roles after an MBA
- Returning to India to multinational companies, research labs or universities
Starting pay
Depends entirely on country, field and whether you get work authorisation. In tech and quantitative fields abroad, first salaries are high in local terms but so are costs; in many other fields, pay is modest. Always compare expected pay with the total loan you will carry.

Questions families ask
Where do I start?
Open the LLOS study-abroad directory at /education/study-abroad/paths/#after-graduation. It lays out the path after graduation — exams, countries, costs and visas — and links to country and university pages.
Is a three-year Indian degree enough for a master's abroad?
For the UK, Australia and many European programmes, often yes. For many US and some European programmes, a three-year degree may need a master's or extra credits first. Check each university.
Do I need the GRE?
Many US programmes have made it optional, while some still require it; most UK and European programmes do not ask for it. An English test is required nearly everywhere unless you qualify for a waiver.
Is a PhD abroad affordable?
A funded PhD usually covers tuition and pays a stipend for living costs, so it can cost you little. Getting one depends on research fit and strong recommendation letters.
Should I work before going?
For MBAs, two to five years of work experience is normally expected. For MS and MSc, one or two years of relevant work can strengthen applications and clarify what you want to study.
