UGC NET (Assistant Professor eligibility, JRF and PhD admission) in India — eligibility, exams, fees, careers

UGC NET is the national test that decides who is eligible to be appointed Assistant Professor in Indian universities and colleges, who gets a Junior Research Fellowship to do a funded PhD, and who can enter a PhD on NET marks alone. It covers humanities, social sciences, commerce, education, law, languages, computer science and related subjects (85 subjects in recent cycles). Science subjects such as physics, chemistry, life sciences and maths are covered by the separate CSIR NET.

Know this. Families hear 'NET qualified' and think 'professor job'. NET is only the minimum eligibility; permanent Assistant Professor posts are few, advertised irregularly, and filled by the university or state commission through its own selection, where a PhD, publications and teaching experience count heavily. Aim for JRF, not just NET, and use it to do a PhD, because the JRF funds your research and a PhD makes you far more competitive for permanent posts.

Who can apply

A master's degree (or equivalent) with at least 55% marks, or 50% for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD and third-gender candidates, without rounding off. Final-year master's students may apply provisionally and must complete the degree with the required marks within two years of the result (one year if they qualify for PhD admission only). Candidates with a four-year / eight-semester bachelor's degree with at least 75% (5% relaxation for reserved categories) can also appear, in any subject they want to do a PhD in; they can qualify for JRF and PhD admission but not for Assistant Professor. Age: JRF applicants must be not more than 30 years on the first day of the month the exam concludes, with up to 5 years' relaxation for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, third gender and women, and for research experience or armed forces service (total relaxation capped at 5 years); LL.M. holders get 3 years. There is no upper age limit for Assistant Professor or PhD admission.

How admission works

NTA runs UGC NET twice a year, in June and December cycles, as a computer-based test. Paper I (50 questions, 100 marks) tests teaching and research aptitude, reasoning, comprehension and general awareness; Paper II (100 questions, 200 marks) tests your subject. Both are taken together in one 3-hour sitting with no break, every question carries 2 marks, and there is no negative marking. Results come in three categories: (1) JRF plus Assistant Professor plus PhD admission; (2) Assistant Professor plus PhD admission; (3) PhD admission only. To be considered at all you need at least 40% aggregate across both papers (35% for reserved categories); the number qualifying for Assistant Professor is capped at 6% of those who appeared, split by category and subject, and JRF slots are fewer still. Qualifying does not give you a job: you must apply for Assistant Professor posts advertised by universities, colleges or state commissions, or use your JRF to join a PhD, where universities admit NET/JRF holders through an interview.

You like reading, explaining ideas and writing
You can take the test more than once; it runs twice a year
You want a PhD fellowship rather than paying your way through research

Think twice if

You think NET alone guarantees a permanent teaching job; it is a minimum eligibility, not an appointment
Your master's marks are below 55% (50% for reserved categories) and you have no four-year UG route
You want a science PhD with CSIR fellowships; that is CSIR NET (or GATE for engineering)
You are looking for a short route to a high salary
You are unwilling to move cities for a college or PhD position

The honest part

Only about 6% of those who appear qualify for Assistant Professor, and JRF is a much smaller slice; cut-offs vary by subject and category every cycle.
Many NET holders work for years as guest or contract faculty on low pay while waiting for permanent recruitment.
The JRF offer is valid for three years from the award letter; if you do not join a PhD in time, you lose the fellowship.
State recruitment for college teachers can be delayed for years or held up in court.
The subject syllabus is broader than most MA/M.Com courses, so self-study of topics your university skipped is unavoidable.

What it costs

Government: Exam fee is modest: ₹1,150 for General, ₹600 for Gen-EWS and OBC-NCL, and ₹325 for SC/ST/PwD/third gender (2025 figures), plus bank charges and GST. Self-study with the UGC syllabus and previous papers costs little.
Private: Online courses and test series commonly cost ₹2,000–20,000; classroom coaching up to ₹30,000–50,000.
Help: JRF holders receive a fellowship during their PhD (₹37,000 a month for two years, then ₹42,000 as SRF, plus an annual contingency grant, under current CSIR/UGC rates). SC, OBC and PwD candidates can apply for the National Fellowships (NFSC, NFOBC, NFPwD) through the same exam.

Starting pay

A permanent Assistant Professor in a UGC-scale college or university starts at Academic Level 10 (basic about ₹57,700 a month); with allowances take-home is usually about ₹80,000–1.1 lakh a month in central and many state institutions. Guest and contract faculty are paid far less, often ₹25,000–50,000 a month or per-lecture rates, and many NET holders spend years in such posts. Private college pay varies widely, from below ₹30,000 to UGC-scale. JRF fellowship is ₹37,000 a month.

Questions families ask

What is the difference between NET and JRF?

Qualifying NET makes you eligible to be appointed Assistant Professor (and for PhD admission). JRF is a higher cut-off within the same exam that also gives you a fellowship to do a PhD. JRF holders are automatically eligible for Assistant Professor as well. The age limit of 30 (plus relaxations) applies only to JRF.

Can I take NET after a four-year bachelor's degree?

Yes, if you have at least 75% marks (5% relaxation for reserved categories). You can qualify for JRF and PhD admission and may choose the subject you want to do a PhD in, even if it differs from your degree. You cannot become eligible for Assistant Professor on a four-year UG alone; for that you need a master's degree with the required marks.

How long is the NET certificate valid?

The Assistant Professor eligibility is valid for life. The JRF award letter is valid for three years from its date of issue; you must join a PhD and start the fellowship within that time.

Is there negative marking?

No. Each question carries 2 marks and wrong answers are not penalised, so attempt every question.

Do I need NET if I have a PhD?

Under UGC rules, NET/SET/SLET is the minimum eligibility for Assistant Professor, and exemptions are governed by UGC regulations; PhD holders awarded under the UGC PhD regulations have historically been exempted. The rules have changed more than once, so check the current UGC regulations and the specific job advertisement.

Which is better for me, UGC NET or state SET?

UGC NET is valid for Assistant Professor posts across India and also gives the JRF route. A state SET (SLET) is valid only in that state and has no JRF. If you plan to work only in your own state, SET can be easier to clear; most aspirants take both.
