About the author: Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru (1889-1964) was the first Prime Minister of independent India and one of the foremost leaders of the freedom struggle. A close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, he was imprisoned many times by the British. He wrote some of his most important books in jail, including 'Glimpses of World History', 'An Autobiography' and 'The Discovery of India' (originally written in English as 'The Discovery of India', and translated into Hindi as 'Bharat ki Khoj'). 'Bharat ki Khoj' was written between April and September 1944 during his imprisonment in the Ahmadnagar Fort. In it Nehru explores the long history, culture, unity and spirit of India. He had deep love for India and its people, and a scientific, rational outlook on life.
📖 Detailed Explanation

This chapter is the opening section of Nehru's book 'Bharat ki Khoj' (The Discovery of India). Nehru tells us where and when the book was written. It was begun in April 1944 in the Ahmadnagar Fort, where he and his colleagues had been imprisoned for nearly twenty months by the British. This was his ninth term in jail. The number of days of his earlier imprisonments was large; this one added many more to the total. Living within the high walls of the old fort, cut off from the outside world, he turned to writing and to thinking about his country.

Nehru describes how the days and months passed slowly in the fort. The companions of his imprisonment helped pass the time; they discussed many subjects. But the long days of forced idleness made him restless. He felt the need to do something useful, to fill his mind with thought. So he began to think deeply about India - its past, its history, its peoples and their long story stretching back thousands of years. Out of these reflections grew the book.

An interesting and moving part of the chapter is Nehru's account of the small garden inside the fort. The prisoners decided to make a garden to keep themselves busy. They worked hard, dug the hard ground, planted seeds and flowers, and watched them grow. Watching a seed sprout and grow into a plant gave Nehru great joy and a feeling of hope and life even within the prison walls. The garden became a symbol of life and creation against the dullness of jail.

Nehru also reflects on history and the meaning of the past. He says that the past matters because it has made us what we are. India has a very long history full of ups and downs, of great achievements and of decline. He feels a deep emotional bond with this past, yet he also looks to the future. He does not want to live in the past but wants to learn from it and move forward. He wonders how India, with such an ancient and rich civilization, came under foreign rule, and how it can be made strong and free again.

Nehru remembers that the Ahmadnagar Fort itself is a place of history. Many events of the past took place here, and the very walls seem to carry the weight of bygone centuries. Sitting in such a historic place sharpened his thoughts about India's long journey through time. He felt connected to countless generations of Indians who had lived, struggled and dreamed before him. This sense of continuity - the unbroken thread joining ancient India to the present - is the central feeling of the chapter and of the whole book.

'Ahmadnagar ka Kila' is the opening chapter of Jawaharlal Nehru's 'Bharat ki Khoj' (The Discovery of India), which he wrote in 1944 while imprisoned for the ninth time in the Ahmadnagar Fort. To pass the long, idle days of captivity Nehru and his fellow prisoners discussed many subjects and even made a small garden, in which the sprouting of seeds gave him deep joy and a sense of life within the prison walls. Cut off from the outside world, Nehru turned his mind to India - its ancient and eventful past, its peoples and its long unbroken history. He reflects on why the past matters, on the deep bond he feels with India's history while also looking towards the future, and on the great question of how such an old civilization came under foreign rule. The historic fort itself deepened his sense of India's continuity through the ages, and out of these reflections his famous book was born.

We should know and respect our country's history and culture, for it has made us what we are; but we must not get trapped in the past. Even in hard and lonely circumstances, useful work, thought and a love for one's land can keep the spirit alive and turned towards a hopeful future.

The title 'Ahmadnagar ka Kila' (The Ahmadnagar Fort) is apt because it is in this very fort that Nehru was imprisoned and where he wrote 'Bharat ki Khoj'. The historic fort, with its old walls full of the memory of past centuries, both provided the setting and inspired the very reflections on India's past that make up the book. Thus the place gives its name to the chapter that opens his discovery of India.

Nehru was imprisoned in the Ahmadnagar Fort for nearly twenty months from 1944 - his ninth term in jail. The long, idle days passed slowly. To keep busy and useful, he and his fellow prisoners discussed many subjects and made a small garden inside the fort; watching seeds sprout and plants grow filled him with joy and a sense of life even within the prison walls. Cut off from the outside world, Nehru turned his restless mind towards India - its ancient past, its peoples, its long and unbroken history. Thinking about why the past matters, about his deep bond with India's history, and about how such an old civilization came under foreign rule, he poured all these thoughts into writing. Thus, out of the loneliness of prison and his love for his country, the great book 'Bharat ki Khoj' was born.

The garden made by Nehru and his fellow prisoners is one of the most touching parts of the chapter. Confined within the grim, lifeless walls of the old fort, the prisoners chose to dig the hard ground and plant seeds and flowers. Watching a tiny seed sprout and grow into a living plant gave Nehru deep happiness. The garden thus becomes a powerful symbol: against the dullness and deadness of captivity, it stands for life, growth, creation and hope. It shows that the human spirit cannot be imprisoned, and that even in the hardest circumstances people can create beauty and keep alive their faith in the future. In a larger sense, the growing garden mirrors Nehru's hope that India too, though bound, would one day grow free and flourish.
