About the author: Jawaharlal Nehru (1889-1964) was the first Prime Minister of independent India and one of the foremost leaders of the freedom movement. Born in Allahabad, he was educated in England at Harrow and Cambridge. Deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, he gave up a life of comfort to join the national struggle and spent many years in British jails. A scholar, thinker and gifted writer, Nehru wrote several books, including 'The Discovery of India' (the original English work from which 'Bharat ki Khoj' is the Hindi translation), 'An Autobiography' and 'Glimpses of World History'. 'The Discovery of India' was written during 1942-1946 while he was imprisoned in the Ahmadnagar Fort. In it he explores India's long history, culture and civilisation with great love and insight.
📖 Detailed Explanation
In this chapter Nehru describes the 'last phase' of British rule in India and the awakening of the Indian people. He explains that British power in India reached its peak in the nineteenth century, but along with it grew a new awareness among Indians. The chapter opens with the historic events of 1857 — the great revolt against the British, which the British called a 'mutiny' but which was in fact a widespread uprising of soldiers, peasants and dispossessed rulers against foreign rule.

Nehru points out that 1857 was much more than a military mutiny. It was a feudal uprising — the last attempt of the old order of princes and landlords to throw off British rule. Yet it also drew in the common people. After it was crushed with great cruelty, the British Crown took over direct control of India from the East India Company in 1858. From then on, India was ruled directly in the name of the Queen, and a new, more organised and harsher imperialism began.

The author then describes how British rule changed India's economy. Before the British came, India was known across the world for its handicrafts, fine cotton cloth, silk and other goods. But British policy deliberately destroyed Indian industries so that Britain's own factory-made goods could be sold in India. Indian weavers and craftsmen were ruined. The country which had once been an exporter of cloth was turned into a buyer of British cloth and a supplier of raw materials like cotton. India became poorer and more rural as people were forced back onto the land for survival.

Nehru explains the difference between the way industrialism developed in Europe and the way it affected India. In Europe, the growth of machines and factories destroyed old handicrafts but at the same time created new industries and gave people new work. In India, however, the old handicrafts were destroyed but no new industries were allowed to grow in their place, because the British did not want India to industrialise and compete with Britain. So the artisans had nowhere to go except back to agriculture, which became overcrowded. This unbalanced economy was the root cause of India's deepening poverty.

The chapter also describes how a new middle class slowly came into being under British rule. English education, modern ideas, new means of transport like the railways, and the press brought Indians from different regions closer together. Though the British introduced these things to serve their own interests, they unintentionally helped create a sense of national unity. Educated Indians began to question foreign rule and to demand rights and freedom. Thus the very forces that the British set in motion eventually turned against them and gave birth to the national movement.

Nehru concludes this phase by showing how India, despite being crushed economically and politically, did not lose its inner strength and identity. The seeds of a great awakening had been sown. The people were beginning to rediscover their own history, culture and worth, and a powerful desire for freedom was taking shape. This awakening, born out of suffering and humiliation, would in time grow into the mighty struggle for independence led by leaders like Gandhi.

📝 Summary
'Antim Daur - Ek' ('The Last Phase - One') is taken from Jawaharlal Nehru's 'Bharat ki Khoj' (The Discovery of India). In it Nehru describes the final phase of British rule in India during the nineteenth century. He explains that the revolt of 1857 was not a mere 'mutiny' but a widespread, largely feudal uprising against the British, after which the British Crown took over direct rule of India in 1858. Nehru then analyses how British policy deliberately destroyed India's flourishing handicrafts and industries to sell British factory goods, turning a once-prosperous, cloth-exporting nation into a poor, over-agricultural country that supplied raw materials. He contrasts this with Europe, where industrialism destroyed old crafts but created new industries; in India new industries were not allowed to grow. At the same time, English education, the railways, the press and modern ideas unintentionally brought Indians together, created a new middle class and awakened a sense of national unity and a desire for freedom — the beginning of the great struggle for independence.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea of the chapter is that British rule, especially after 1857, systematically impoverished India by destroying its industries and turning it into a backward agricultural colony serving Britain's interests; yet, ironically, the very modern forces the British introduced — education, railways, press and new ideas — awakened national consciousness and unity among Indians and laid the foundation of the freedom struggle.

🧭 Message & Title
The chapter teaches that foreign domination weakens a nation economically and politically, but a people who hold on to their identity and learn from new knowledge can turn even their suffering into the strength to win freedom. It also reminds us to understand our own history truthfully and to value self-reliance and national unity.

The title 'Antim Daur - Ek' ('The Last Phase - One') is apt because the chapter describes the final phase of British imperial rule in India — the period after 1857 when British power was at its height but the seeds of its end were also being sown. 'Ek' (One) indicates that this is the first part of a two-part account of this last phase. The title rightly focuses our attention on this decisive, closing period of colonial rule and the awakening that it produced.

The British introduced English education, railways, the press and modern ideas mainly to strengthen and run their own administration and trade. But these forces had unexpected results. English education and modern ideas of liberty and rights made educated Indians question foreign rule and demand freedom. The railways and improved communication brought together people from different regions, languages and provinces, creating a feeling that all of them belonged to one country. Newspapers spread ideas and news widely and built common opinion. Out of all this a new educated middle class arose which began to lead the demand for rights. In this ironic way, the very instruments of British control became the means of Indian awakening, fostering a sense of national unity and laying the foundation of the freedom movement that would later grow into a mighty struggle for independence.
