📝 Summary
'The Tale of Melon City' by Vikram Seth is a humorous, satirical narrative poem about a kingdom ruled by a 'just and placid' king. The king orders a triumphal arch to be built across the main road. Riding under it in procession, he finds the arch is too low and it knocks his crown off. Enraged, he orders the chief builder to be hanged. The chief blames the workmen, who blame the masons, who blame the brick-makers, who blame the masons again, and finally the architect is blamed—who points out that he changed the design only on the king's own orders. After much absurd deliberation, a wise old man concludes that the real culprit is the king himself, for the arch was built to his command. The impatient king, determined that 'someone must be hanged', orders the noose readied. But the noose is too high for everyone tried; ironically, the only person tall enough to fit it perfectly is the king. So the king is hanged by his own royal decree. The people, unbothered, cheer 'Long live the King!' The ministers, needing a ruler, decide to crown the next passer-by—a complete idiot whose stock answer to everything is 'a melon'. A melon is duly crowned and placed on the throne. The people accept this happily and with pride, calling it the will of God, because the melon-king practises perfect 'laissez-faire'—he leaves them entirely free to say and do as they please. The poem ends with the citizens cheering their melon-king.

💡 Central Idea
Through a comic, absurd fable, the poem satirises arbitrary and irrational governance and a passive citizenry. It exposes how rulers who lack wisdom shift blame endlessly, how flawed authority cannot deliver true justice, and how a politically indifferent people, valuing peace and personal freedom above all, will happily accept even a melon as their ruler so long as they are left undisturbed.

🎯 Themes
Satire on arbitrary and irrational power: The poem mocks rulers who govern by whim rather than reason. The king's foolish orders, the endless shifting of blame and the absurd insistence that 'someone must be hanged' expose the dangers of authority exercised without wisdom or accountability.

Failure and farce of justice: The chain of blame—from builders to workmen to masons to brick-makers to the architect and back to the king—shows a justice system that endlessly evades responsibility instead of finding truth, turning the administration of justice into a meaningless farce.

Political apathy of the masses: The people never question their rulers; they cheer 'Long live the King!' even as he hangs, and proudly accept a melon as monarch. This reveals a passive, indifferent populace that prizes peace and personal liberty over good governance.

Irony of the praise of authority: The repeated description of the king as 'just and wise' clashes sharply with his foolish and unjust actions. This dramatic irony underlines the gap between the empty praise heaped on rulers and their real incompetence.

🧭 Message & Title
The poem warns that when rulers govern without reason and citizens accept authority without questioning it, the inevitable result is absurd, unjust and incompetent government—so much so that even a melon can sit on the throne unchallenged. It urges both wise, accountable leadership and an alert, thinking citizenry that does not surrender its judgement for the sake of mere peace.

The title 'The Tale of Melon City' is apt and ironic. The word 'Tale' signals a light, fable-like story, preparing us for the comic and absurd events. 'Melon City' names the kingdom after the fruit that finally comes to rule it—an absurd climax in which a melon literally becomes king. The title thus captures both the storytelling tone and the central irony: a city so politically indifferent that it is content to be ruled by, and even named after, a melon. It draws the reader's curiosity while pointing straight at the poem's satire on mindless governance.

Vikram Seth's poem is a sharp political satire dressed up as a comic fable. It exposes the absurdity of a government run by whim rather than reason. The 'just and placid' king's foolishness begins when his too-low arch knocks off his crown and he demands a hanging. The long chain of blame that follows—builders blaming workmen, workmen blaming masons, masons blaming brick-makers, brick-makers blaming masons again, and the architect finally reminding the king that the design was changed on his own orders—mocks a justice system that endlessly evades responsibility instead of seeking truth. The king's irrational insistence that 'someone must be hanged' reduces justice to a meaningless ritual, and the irony that he himself fits the noose shows arbitrary power destroying itself. The officials—ministers and the wise man—either rubber-stamp folly or fail to prevent it, satirising a state machinery of yes-men. Finally, the crowning of a melon and the people's proud acceptance of it ridicule a passive citizenry that prizes peace over good governance. Through humour, irony and absurdity, Seth delivers a serious warning about unthinking authority and unquestioning obedience.

Irony and humour are the very heart of the poem, and far from weakening its message, they make it sharper and more memorable. The chief irony lies in the gap between appearance and reality: the king is repeatedly called 'just and wise', yet every decision he makes is foolish and unjust. The supreme stroke of irony is that the king is hanged by his own royal decree, because he alone is tall enough for the noose—arbitrary power literally destroys itself. Further irony appears when the people cheer 'Long live the King!' even as he dies, and proudly accept a melon as their ruler. The humour comes from the absurd situations—a crown knocked off, an endless passing of blame, an idiot's stock answer crowning a melon, and the comic sing-song rhyme. This light, ballad-like comedy lulls the reader and then drives the criticism home all the more forcefully: by making folly laughable, Seth makes us see clearly how dangerous and ridiculous mindless authority and blind obedience really are. Thus the gaiety of the surface and the gravity of the meaning work together, proving that satire delivered with a smile can strike deeper than open preaching.

The king himself had ordered that someone must be hanged to set matters right. When the noose proved too high for everyone else and only the king was tall enough to fit it exactly, he ended up being hanged according to his own command—hence 'by royal decree'.

It is deeply ironic because the people cheer 'Long live the King!' at the very moment the king is being hanged. The traditional cry of loyalty is mechanically repeated without any thought, exposing the people's blind, indifferent acceptance of authority.

The ministers were relieved that the troublesome, foolish king was finally gone. However, they believed the state must, by custom, have a king, so they decided to crown the very next person who happened to pass by the city gate.

By calling it 'the will of God', the people avoid questioning how a melon came to rule them. It shows their fatalistic, unthinking attitude: instead of examining the absurdity of their government, they passively accept whatever happens as fate.

'Laissez faire' means a policy of non-interference, leaving people free to do as they like. The people praise their melon-king simply because he does not interfere in their lives and lets them say and do whatever they please; for them, freedom from interference matters more than the quality of the ruler.

The extract satirises the citizens as politically apathetic and indifferent. They neither value good governance nor question absurd authority; as long as they are left undisturbed to do their own thing, they will gladly praise even a melon as their king. The poet gently mocks this passive, irresponsible attitude.
