✍️ About the Author / Poet

Vikram Seth (born 1952 in Kolkata) is one of India's most celebrated contemporary writers, equally accomplished as a poet and novelist. Educated at Doon School, Oxford, Stanford and Nanjing University, he writes in English with remarkable command over rhyme, metre and wit. He is best known for his monumental novel 'A Suitable Boy' and his novel-in-verse 'The Golden Gate'. 'The Tale of Melon City' is a light, satirical narrative poem written in rhyming couplets that gently mocks foolish rulers and the laziness of a complacent populace, using a deceptively simple fairy-tale form to deliver sharp political commentary.

📖 Stanza-wise Explanation

In the city of which I sing
There was a just and placid King.
The King proclaimed an arch should be
Constructed, that triumphally
Would span the major thoroughfare
To edify spectators there.

In the city the poet is describing, there ruled a fair-minded and calm King. One day the King ordered that a triumphal arch be built across the main road of the city so that the people passing by would be impressed and instructed by it.

The workmen went and built the thing.
They did so; but it touched the King's
Head, as he rode along the street.
It knocked his crown off, and his seat,
Sad to say, was set askew.
He frowned. The King said, 'This won't do.'

The workmen built the arch as ordered. But it was built too low, so when the King rode beneath it, the arch struck his head, knocked off his crown, and tilted him in his saddle. Annoyed and embarrassed, the King frowned and declared that this would not do.

The chief of builders was led out
To be hanged. The rope was wound about
His neck. He screamed, 'O King, it's not
My fault. The workmen are at fault.'
'Oh!' said the King and set him free,
'So men of yours did this to me.'

The King ordered the chief builder to be hanged for the blunder. As the noose was placed around his neck, the chief builder protested that it was not his fault but the fault of the workmen. The King accepted this excuse, freed him, and turned his anger on the workmen instead.

The workmen now were called. They said,
'It was the bricks that were too thin.
What can we do? It is the fault
Of him who made the bricks too small.'
Said the King, 'Now this is something true.'

The workmen were summoned. They shifted the blame onto the bricks, saying the bricks were the wrong size, and that the real culprit was the mason who made them. The gullible King accepted this reasoning as well, thinking it sounded right.

The masons were then sought and brought.
They told the King, 'The workmen ought
To have done with care.'
And then the workmen pointed out
It was the masons who had built
The wall, and they had built it crooked.

The masons were then brought before the King. They blamed the workmen, while the workmen blamed the masons in return. The blame kept being passed back and forth, with no one willing to take responsibility for the badly built arch.

The King, to whom the law was dear,
Now called the wisest man, a sage
Who'd lived for many a year.
'Justice must be done,' he said.
The sage was carried to the throne;
He couldn't walk and groaned and groaned.

The King, who valued law and justice, decided to consult the oldest and wisest man in the kingdom. The aged sage was so old and frail that he could not walk and had to be carried to the throne, all the while groaning with weakness.

He looked around and then he said,
'The culprit must be punished. Truly,
The arch it was that banged your head.'
So the King declared, 'We'll hang the arch.'
The arch was therefore led to be hanged.

After examining the matter, the foolish old sage declared that the real culprit was the arch itself, since it was the arch that had struck the King's head. Accepting this absurd verdict, the King ordered that the arch be hanged, and so the arch was solemnly led to the gallows.

Then a councillor said, 'How can we
Hang so great a thing? Disgrace
Will fall upon our nation's face
If we hang a thing as high
As that. It touched the royal head!'
The King said thoughtfully, 'That's true.'

Just then a councillor objected, pointing out that the arch was too lofty and important to be hanged — after all, it had touched the royal head — and hanging something so high would bring disgrace upon the nation. The easily-swayed King thoughtfully agreed.

The crowd, that had by now grown vast,
Began to murmur, then to shout.
The King perceived their mood and trembled
And said, 'The hanging must take place
Today, and that man will be hanged
Who is the tallest of the race.'

By now a huge crowd had gathered, and it grew restless, murmuring and then shouting for an execution. Sensing the dangerous mood, the frightened King declared that a hanging must take place that very day, and that the tallest man in the kingdom would be the one to be hanged.

The tallest man, as it turned out,
Was the King himself, and so
The noose was set, and down below
The eager crowd cheered loud and long;
The King was dead — and all along
They hailed his memory in song.

Ironically, when everyone was measured, the tallest man in the land turned out to be the King himself. Bound by his own command, the King was fitted with the noose, the crowd cheered, and the King was hanged. Thus the foolish ruler fell victim to his own absurd justice.

The Ministers heaved a sigh of relief
And said, 'The nation needs a head.
Let's catch the next that passes by
And make him King.' They held this view
Because they were not very wise.
The next to pass might well be wise.

After the King's death the Ministers were relieved but realised the nation needed a new ruler. Lacking any wisdom themselves, they decided to make King whoever next happened to pass through the city gate, leaving the choice entirely to chance.

An idiot answered, 'A melon.'
For he was asked, on being made
To choose, what he would have as King.
'A melon,' was his constant cry.
The Ministers, when this they heard,
Crowned the melon, and obeyed his word.

The first person to pass by happened to be an idiot. When asked who should be King, he kept giving his one stock answer — 'a melon' (it was his standard reply to every question). Taking his word literally, the Ministers crowned a melon and proclaimed it King of the city.

They carried it with pomp and state
And placed it on the throne. And so
The melon ruled. And if you ask
How well it ruled, the people say,
'It does not matter in the least.
We're free to do just as we please,
And we are happy.'

With great ceremony the Ministers placed the melon upon the throne, and so the melon became King and ruled the city. If anyone asked how well it ruled, the people would reply that it made no difference at all — they were left free to live exactly as they pleased, and they were perfectly content. The city was thereafter called Melon City.

📝 Summary

'The Tale of Melon City' by Vikram Seth is a humorous, satirical ballad about a kingdom ruled by a supposedly 'just and placid' King. The King orders a triumphal arch to be built across the main street, but it is built so low that it knocks off his crown as he rides beneath it. Demanding justice, the King launches an absurd chain of blame: the chief builder blames the workmen, the workmen blame the masons, the masons blame the architect, and the architect points out that the King himself had altered the original plans. Confused, the King consults the oldest and wisest sage, who declares that the arch itself is guilty. When the arch cannot be hanged because it had touched the royal head, and the restless crowd clamours for a hanging, the King decrees that the tallest man must die — only to discover that he himself is the tallest, and is hanged by his own foolish order. The Ministers, relieved but witless, decide to crown whoever next passes through the city gate. That person is an idiot whose only answer to any question is 'a melon', so they crown a melon as King. The citizens are perfectly happy under this melon, since they are free to do as they please. The poem mocks irresponsible leadership, blind adherence to senseless laws, and a passive populace that cares nothing for who rules them.

💡 Central Idea

Through a comic fairy-tale, the poem satirises the absurdity of incompetent, irresponsible governance and a blind, mechanical 'justice' that punishes everyone and everything except the real wrongdoer. It also mocks a passive, indifferent public that cares only for its own comfort and freedom, not for the quality or sanity of those who rule it.

🎯 Themes

  • Satire on weak and irresponsible leadership: The 'just and placid' King is in fact indecisive, easily swayed and foolish; he passes the blame, accepts every excuse, and finally destroys himself through his own senseless decrees, exposing the dangers of incompetent rulers.

  • Blind and mechanical justice: The endless chain of blame and the verdict to 'hang the arch' ridicule a legal and administrative system that follows rules mechanically without reason, refusing to fix real responsibility and reducing justice to a farce.

  • Indifference and apathy of the public: The citizens neither resist nor care who rules them; under the melon they are happy simply because they are 'free to do just as they please'. The poem warns that a passive, self-absorbed people allows absurd rulers to flourish.

  • Chance and absurdity in power: Crowning whoever passes by, and finally a melon, shows how power can fall into ridiculous hands through sheer chance. The poem highlights the absurd, accidental nature of authority when no one acts thoughtfully or responsibly.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

The poem's message is that a nation needs wise, decisive and responsible leadership, and a sane system of justice that fixes real accountability rather than blindly following rules. It also reminds citizens that political indifference is dangerous: a people who care only about their own convenience and never question their rulers will end up governed by folly itself.

Justification of the Title

The title 'The Tale of Melon City' is apt and ironic. The word 'Tale' signals a light, fable-like narrative with a hidden moral, while 'Melon City' points to the bizarre climax in which a melon literally becomes King — the symbol of an utterly absurd, leaderless state. The title thus captures both the humorous, story-telling tone and the central satire: a city so indifferent and badly governed that it is happy to be ruled by a melon. The whole poem builds towards explaining how the city came to earn this ridiculous name, making the title perfectly fitting.

Long Answer Questions
Q. 'The Tale of Melon City' is a satire on the system of justice and governance. Discuss with reference to the poem.

Vikram Seth's poem uses a deceptively simple fairy-tale to deliver a sharp satire on weak leadership and mindless justice. The King, ironically called 'just and placid', is in reality indecisive and foolish. When his arch knocks off his crown, he demands justice, but instead of fixing real responsibility he accepts every excuse offered, allowing the blame to pass from the chief builder to the workmen, the masons, the architect, and finally back to himself — a complete circle that exposes how accountability is dodged in a corrupt system. The 'wisest' sage's absurd verdict to hang the arch, and the councillor's equally absurd objection, reduce justice to a farce in which form is followed but reason is absent. The climax — the King hanged by his own order for being the tallest, and a melon later crowned King because no one cares who rules — completes the satire. Through exaggeration, irony and humour, Seth criticises rulers who lack judgement, a legal system that punishes mechanically without sense, and a public so indifferent that it is happy to be governed by a fruit. The poem warns that such folly and apathy together make a mockery of governance.

Q. How does the poem present the citizens of Melon City, and what does their attitude suggest about a healthy society?

The citizens of Melon City are shown as passive, fickle and entirely self-centred. Early in the poem the crowd grows vast and restless, murmuring and then shouting for a hanging — they crave spectacle and bloodshed rather than true justice, and it is this mob pressure that drives the King to his fatal decree. Later, when the throne falls vacant, the people raise no objection to the Ministers' ridiculous decision to crown whoever passes by, nor to a melon becoming King. Asked how well the melon rules, they reply that it 'does not matter in the least' because they are 'free to do just as we please' and are 'happy'. Their only concern is personal comfort and freedom, not the competence or sanity of their government. Through this, Seth suggests that a healthy society cannot rest on such apathy: citizens who refuse to think, question, or take responsibility for their governance allow folly and absurdity to take the throne. Political awareness, participation and accountability — not mere comfort-seeking indifference — are essential if a nation is to be well and wisely governed.

Reference to Context (Extract-based)
The King, to whom the law was dear, / Now called the wisest man, a sage / Who'd lived for many a year. / 'Justice must be done,' he said. / The sage was carried to the throne; / He couldn't walk and groaned and groaned.
Q. Why did the King call the wisest man?

The King, who valued law and justice, was unable to fix who was really to blame for the badly built arch, so he called the oldest and wisest sage to deliver a just verdict.

Q. What is ironic about the description of the sage?

Though called the 'wisest man', the sage is so old and feeble that he cannot even walk and must be carried, groaning, to the throne. The irony deepens when this 'wise' man gives the absurd verdict that the arch should be hanged.

Q. Identify and explain one literary device used in these lines.

'Groaned and groaned' is an example of repetition, used to emphasise the sage's extreme weakness and to create a comic effect that undercuts his supposed wisdom; the lines also use irony in calling such a helpless man 'the wisest man'.

The melon ruled. And if you ask / How well it ruled, the people say, / 'It does not matter in the least. / We're free to do just as we please, / And we are happy.'
Q. Who is the 'melon' referred to here, and how did it become the ruler?

The 'melon' is literally a melon that the Ministers crowned as King. After the old King's death they decided to make King whoever next passed by; that person was an idiot whose only answer was 'a melon', so they crowned a melon.

Q. What does the people's reply reveal about their attitude?

Their reply shows complete political indifference and apathy. They do not care who or what rules them as long as they are 'free to do just as we please'; their only concern is personal comfort, not good or responsible governance.

Q. What is the central satire conveyed through these closing lines?

These lines satirise both absurd governance and a passive public: a state can be 'ruled' by a brainless melon and the people remain perfectly happy, which mocks the idea that they have any real interest in the quality, justice or responsibility of those who govern them.
