✍️ About the Author / Poet

Selma Lagerlof (1858-1940) was a celebrated Swedish writer and the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, which she received in 1909. Born in Marbacka in the province of Varmland, she grew up listening to the folk tales and legends of the Swedish countryside, and this rich oral tradition deeply shaped her imaginative storytelling. She trained and worked for a time as a schoolteacher before devoting herself fully to writing. Her works characteristically fuse realism with folklore and a strong moral vision, exploring human dignity, kindness and redemption. Her best-known books include 'Gosta Berling's Saga' and 'The Wonderful Adventures of Nils'. In 'The Rattrap', written originally in Swedish, she combines a simple, almost fairy-tale plot with a profound message about the essential goodness that lies hidden within every human being.

📖 Detailed Explanation

The story opens by introducing a poor, homeless peddler who wanders about selling small rattraps made of wire. He buys or begs the raw material and earns barely enough to keep body and soul together. His life is dreary, monotonous and friendless, and he is treated with suspicion wherever he goes. To pass the lonely hours, the peddler entertains himself with a strange but profound idea: that the whole world is nothing but a giant rattrap. All the good things of life food, shelter, clothing, riches and pleasures are merely baits set out to trap people, just as cheese or meat is set in a rattrap to lure a rat. The moment a person reaches out and touches the bait, the trap snaps shut and his freedom is lost. This bitter philosophy gives the peddler a malicious joy, because the world has always been so unkind to him.

One dark evening the peddler approaches a little grey cottage by the roadside and asks for shelter for the night. The owner, an old crofter who lives alone, welcomes him warmly. The lonely old man is so glad of company that he treats the stranger generously serving him hot supper and tobacco, and playing cards with him. The crofter confides that in his prime he worked at Ramsjo Ironworks, and that his one cow now supports him by giving milk which he sells to the creamery. To prove how well the cow pays, he proudly shows the peddler thirty kronor in cash which he has hung in a leather pouch on a nail by the window. The next morning the crofter leaves to milk his cow. The peddler, who is also about to leave, is suddenly tempted. He smashes the window pane, steals the thirty kronor, and walks away.

At first the peddler is pleased with his cleverness, but he soon realises he dare not walk along the public road with stolen money. He turns into a great, confusing forest to be safe. As the woods grow thicker and darker, he loses his way completely and the endless trees seem to close in upon him. Exhausted and despairing, he reflects that he has himself been caught: the thirty kronor were the bait, and he has been lured into the world's rattrap exactly as he had always imagined. The whole forest, with its trunks and branches, becomes for him an inescapable prison. As he sinks down, certain his last hour has come, he hears the regular thumping sound of a hammer in the distance the sound of the Ramsjo Ironworks. Gathering his last strength, he stumbles toward it.

He reaches the ironworks and is allowed by the master smith to rest by the warm furnace. Late that night the owner of the works, the ironmaster, walks through the forge on his nightly round. In the dim glow of the fire he mistakes the ragged peddler for an old regimental comrade, a Captain Nils Olof von Stahle. The peddler, hoping for money, does not correct him at once. The ironmaster invites him home, but the peddler refuses, fearing exposure he does not wish to go to the manor house dressed in rags. The ironmaster goes home, but soon sends his daughter Edla Willmansson to persuade the stranger. Edla, kind and perceptive, notices that the man is frightened, yet she speaks to him gently and assures him he may leave as freely as he came. Won over by her courtesy, the peddler agrees to accompany her home for Christmas.

At the manor house, the peddler is bathed, shaved and given good clothes and food. The next morning, in daylight, the ironmaster realises his mistake the man is not Captain von Stahle at all, but a stranger. Angry at being deceived, he threatens to call the sheriff. The peddler defends himself coolly, reminding the ironmaster that he never claimed to be the captain it was the ironmaster who mistook him and that the world is a rattrap which one day may snare even the rich and powerful. At this point Edla intervenes. She insists that they keep the promise of Christmas hospitality and let the man stay and enjoy a day of peace, for they had invited him themselves. Her father reluctantly agrees.

The peddler enjoys the Christmas Eve feast and sleeps deeply. On Christmas Day the ironmaster and Edla go to church, where they hear that a crofter near Ramsjo has been robbed of thirty kronor by a man who sold rattraps. Edla is dismayed, realising their guest is the thief, and fears what they may find at home. But when they return, they discover the peddler has gone and left behind a small package addressed to Edla. Inside is one of his rattraps, the stolen thirty kronor, and a letter. In the letter the peddler thanks her for treating him so kindly, like a real captain, and returns the money, asking her to give it back to the old crofter. He writes that because she was so good to him, he did not wish her to be shamed by a thief on Christmas, and that her kindness had raised him and helped him to escape the world's rattrap. He signs the letter as 'Captain von Stahle'. Edla is deeply moved, for her simple goodness has awakened the buried decency in a broken man.

💡 Central Idea

The central idea of 'The Rattrap' is that no human being is wholly bad, and that the essential goodness within even the most fallen person can be awakened through love, kindness and respect. The world may indeed be a 'rattrap' baited with temptations, but genuine compassion can free a person from its snares. Selma Lagerlof shows that human beings respond to the way they are treated: cruelty and suspicion harden the heart, while trust and dignity redeem it.

🎯 Themes

  • The essential goodness in human beings: However degraded a person may seem, a spark of decency survives within. Edla's kindness reawakens the peddler's conscience, proving that no one is beyond redemption.

  • The world as a rattrap: Life's comforts and riches are baits that ensnare and enslave people. The metaphor warns against greed and temptation, while the story shows that one can still escape the trap through goodness.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

The story teaches that kindness, trust and respect have the power to transform even a hardened, dishonest person. We should not judge people by their appearance or circumstances, for goodness lies hidden in everyone and needs only compassion to bring it to light. We must also beware the baits of the world greed and temptation lest we trap ourselves; and we should treat the unfortunate with dignity rather than suspicion.

Justification of the Title

The title 'The Rattrap' is apt and deeply symbolic. On the surface it refers to the wire rattraps the peddler sells. More profoundly, it embodies the peddler's philosophy that the whole world is a rattrap in which riches, joys, food and shelter are baits luring people to their ruin. The peddler himself is caught when the bait of the stolen thirty kronor leads him into the forest-trap, fulfilling his own theory. The title thus unifies the literal object, the central metaphor, and the moral truth of the story how easily humans are ensnared by temptation, and how, through goodness, they may yet break free. No other title could capture the tale's meaning so completely.

🪄 Literary Devices

Metaphor / Extended Metaphor — “the whole world... is nothing but a big rattrap”

The world is compared to a rattrap throughout the story; riches and pleasures are the bait. This sustained metaphor controls the entire narrative and its moral meaning.

Symbolism — “the thirty kronor as bait; the dark forest as a trap”

Concrete objects carry deeper meaning: the rattrap symbolises worldly temptation, the stolen money is the bait, and the confusing forest becomes the closing trap of greed.

Irony — “the peddler who sells rattraps is himself trapped”

It is ironic that the man who conceived the rattrap theory is caught by his own bait, and that the ironmaster, meaning to do good, mistakes a thief for a captain.

Simile — “the forest closed in upon him like an impenetrable prison”

Comparisons using 'like' or 'as' make the peddler's plight vivid, likening the forest to a prison and his entrapment to that of a rat.

Allusion — “references to Christmas and Christian charity”

The Christmas setting alludes to themes of forgiveness, charity and rebirth, deepening the story's message of redemption.

Characternym / Significant naming — “'Captain von Stahle' (Stahl = steel)”

The assumed name von Stahle, echoing the German word for steel, is fitting in a story set at an ironworks and suggests the strengthening of the peddler's character into something nobler.

👤 Character Sketches

The Peddler (Rattrap Seller)

The protagonist is a poor, homeless vagabond who sells wire rattraps and survives by begging and petty theft. Years of poverty and unkind treatment have made him cynical, lonely and bitter, leading him to view the world as a rattrap. He is intelligent and reflective, capable of a philosophy of his own, and not without humour. Though he succumbs to temptation by stealing the crofter's money, he is shown to possess a buried conscience and inherent goodness. Edla's trust and respect transform him: he returns the money, signs himself 'Captain von Stahle', and reveals himself capable of gratitude, honour and self-respect. He embodies the story's faith that no human being is wholly bad.

Edla Willmansson

Edla is the ironmaster's daughter and the moral heart of the story. Plain-looking but gentle, observant and tired-eyed, she possesses deep insight into human nature. She at once perceives the peddler's fear and unhappiness and treats him with unfailing kindness, courtesy and respect, like a true guest. Unlike her father, she does not withdraw her hospitality even after the man's true identity and theft are revealed; she insists on honouring the promise of Christmas. Her compassion, free of condescension, is what awakens the peddler's goodness and brings about his redemption. She represents the redemptive power of selfless, dignified love.

The Ironmaster

The owner of the Ramsjo Ironworks is a kindly but impulsive and somewhat status-conscious man. Mistaking the peddler for his old comrade Captain von Stahle, he presses hospitality upon him out of sentimentality and a wish for company. However, his kindness is conditional: once he learns the man is a stranger and a fraud, his warmth turns to anger and he threatens to fetch the sheriff. The Crofter

The old crofter is a lonely former ironworks employee who now lives by selling his cow's milk. Starved of company, he welcomes the peddler with extraordinary generosity food, tobacco, cards and even shows off his thirty kronor in trusting friendliness. His warmth, though betrayed, sets in motion the chain of events; his trust contrasts sharply with the peddler's treachery and highlights the theme of loneliness and the human longing for companionship.

Long Answer Questions
Q. How does the metaphor of the rattrap run through the whole story, and what moral truth does it convey?

The rattrap is both the literal object the peddler sells and the controlling metaphor of the story. The peddler conceives the idea that the whole world is a rattrap in which riches, food, shelter and pleasures are baits; the moment a person is tempted to touch them, the trap closes and freedom is lost. This cynical philosophy springs from his own poverty and the world's cruelty to him. Ironically, the peddler himself becomes the rat: tempted by the bait of the crofter's thirty kronor, he steals the money and, fleeing through the dark forest, loses his way and feels the trees close in on him like a prison he has been caught in the very trap he theorised about. Yet the metaphor does not end in despair. At the ironworks, Edla's unconditional kindness offers him a way out. By returning the money and signing himself 'Captain von Stahle', the peddler proves that a human being, unlike a rat, can choose to free himself from the trap of greed. Thus the metaphor conveys a profound moral truth: the world is full of temptations that ensnare us, but the goodness awakened by love and respect can release even a fallen person and restore his dignity. The rattrap, finally, is not only a symbol of entrapment but of the possibility of escape through moral choice.

Q. Compare and contrast the kindness shown by the ironmaster and that shown by his daughter Edla. Whose kindness redeems the peddler, and why?

Both the ironmaster and Edla offer the peddler hospitality, but their kindness differs greatly in nature and depth. The ironmaster's kindness is impulsive and conditional. He invites the peddler home only because he mistakes him for his old comrade Captain von Stahle; his warmth flows from sentimentality, a desire for company, and concern for appearances. The instant he discovers in daylight that the man is a stranger and an impostor, his goodwill collapses into anger and he threatens to call the sheriff. His charity is shallow, resting on a false identity rather than genuine compassion for a fellow human being. Edla's kindness, by contrast, is unconditional, perceptive and dignified. From the first she senses that the man is frightened and unhappy, yet she speaks to him gently and assures him he may leave as freely as he came. Even after his deception and theft come to light, she insists on honouring the promise of Christmas hospitality and lets him enjoy a day of peace, treating him with the respect due to a true guest rather than the suspicion due to a thief. It is Edla's kindness, not her father's, that redeems the peddler. Because she treats him with trust and equality demanding nothing and looking down on no one she awakens the buried decency within him. Moved by being treated, for once, as an honourable man, the peddler rises to that image: he returns the stolen money, asks that it be given back to the crofter, and signs himself 'Captain von Stahle'. The story thus teaches that true kindness is not patronising charity but a respect that restores human dignity and that such love alone has the power to transform and redeem.
