📖 Detailed Explanation

The play opens in Mr Lamb's large garden on a warm summer day. Derry, a fourteen-year-old boy, slips into the garden believing it to be empty, but is startled when Mr Lamb, an old man, speaks to him. Derry, who has one side of his face badly disfigured by an acid burn, is instinctively defensive and tries to run away. Mr Lamb, however, speaks gently and invites him to stay, assuring him that the gate is always open and that anyone may come in. Derry's first reaction is suspicion; he is so used to people staring at him or pitying him that he expects the worst.

Derry confronts the old man bluntly, telling him not to be afraid and not to pretend, because everyone is frightened or repelled by his burnt face. Mr Lamb, however, refuses to be put off. He says calmly that he is not afraid, that he has seen worse, and that a burnt face is only a small part of a whole person. He gently turns the conversation to his garden, his bees, the ripening fruit and the weeds that he allows to grow because, he says, weeds too are flowers once you know them. Mr Lamb's lack of fear and his refusal to treat Derry as an object of pity slowly disarm the boy.

As they talk, the deep loneliness of both characters becomes clear. Derry says that no one loves him, that even his mother kisses only the good side of his face, and that he has overheard people say only a mother could love such a face. He is bitter, withdrawn and convinced that his disfigurement has condemned him to a life apart. Mr Lamb counters this with a different philosophy of life: he tells Derry that hating, fearing and turning inwards will destroy him far more surely than the acid ever did. He recounts a rhyme children once chanted to mock his lame leg — 'Lamey-Lamb' — yet he has chosen openness over bitterness, keeping his gates open and welcoming everyone.

Mr Lamb's words begin to take effect. Derry admits that he has never spoken to anyone like this before and that he is beginning to think about things differently. He realises that what really matters is not what is on the surface of a person but what lies within, and what one chooses to do with one's life. Excited and moved, Derry rushes home, determined to return to hear the rest of what the old man wants to tell him about the world. He defies his mother, who fears Mr Lamb and warns him not to go back, declaring that if he does not return now he will never accomplish anything in life.

The play ends on a note of cruel irony and tragedy. While Derry is away, Mr Lamb climbs a ladder to pick crab apples for his jelly. The ladder slips and the old man falls. When Derry returns, full of hope and eager to talk, he finds Mr Lamb lying on the ground, dead. Derry calls out to him, refusing at first to believe it, and finally weeps. The man who had just begun to open a new window of hope in Derry's darkened world is suddenly gone. Yet the play suggests that Mr Lamb's influence will live on, for Derry has already begun to change, to look beyond appearances and to choose life and openness over fear and self-pity.

📝 Summary

'On the Face of It' is a radio play by Susan Hill about a chance meeting between Derry, a fourteen-year-old boy whose face is disfigured by an acid burn, and Mr Lamb, a lonely old man with a tin (artificial) leg. Derry, bitter and withdrawn because people stare at and pity his face, wanders into Mr Lamb's open garden. Mr Lamb, unafraid and welcoming, talks to him not about his appearance but about bees, fruit, weeds and the joy of being alive. He teaches Derry that hatred and self-pity are more crippling than any physical defect, and that what matters is the person within, not the face on the surface. Inspired, Derry runs home and, defying his fearful mother, returns to continue the conversation. But in his absence Mr Lamb falls from a ladder while picking crab apples and dies. Derry returns to find him dead and weeps. The play poignantly conveys the themes of acceptance, loneliness and looking beyond appearances, even as it ends in tragic irony.

💡 Central Idea

The central idea of the play is that physical disability or disfigurement is far less crippling than the negative attitudes—fear, prejudice and pity—that society attaches to it, and that one's true worth lies within, not on the face. Genuine human understanding and an open, positive outlook can heal the loneliness of those who are rejected for their appearance.

🎯 Themes

  • Looking beyond appearances: The play urges us to judge people not by their outward 'face' but by their inner self. Both Derry's burnt face and Mr Lamb's tin leg are merely surfaces; their true selves—and their loneliness and need for companionship—lie beneath.

  • Loneliness and isolation: Both characters are profoundly lonely—Derry because of social rejection over his scar, Mr Lamb because of his lameness and old age. Their meeting shows how isolation can be eased when two people accept and understand each other.

  • Attitude towards disability: The play criticises society's tendency to stare at, pity or fear the disabled. It argues that a positive, accepting attitude is far more important than the physical defect itself, and that pity is more wounding than the scar.

  • Hope, healing and the irony of fate: Mr Lamb opens a window of hope and self-acceptance in Derry's mind, beginning his emotional healing. Yet fate cruelly snatches him away through an accidental fall, lending the play a tragic, ironic dimension while suggesting his influence will endure.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

The play teaches that we must look beyond physical appearances and accept people for who they are within. Disability is not a curse; the real handicap is a bitter, self-pitying mind and a society that judges by the surface. A positive outlook, courage and genuine human connection can transform a lonely, rejected life. We should treat the differently-abled with empathy and equality, never with mere pity or fear.

Justification of the Title

The title 'On the Face of It' is richly apt and ironic. The idiom 'on the face of it' means 'judging only by outward appearance', which is exactly how society treats Derry—by the scarred surface of his face. The play overturns this superficial judgement, urging us to see the whole person beneath the face. The word 'face' also literally points to Derry's disfigured face, the very thing that has shaped his life. Thus the title works on both a literal and a metaphorical level, capturing the play's central concern with appearance versus reality.

🪄 Literary Devices

Irony — “Mr Lamb dies in an accidental fall just as he has begun to give Derry hope and a reason to live.”

Situational and tragic irony pervades the ending: the man who teaches Derry to embrace life and not to fear loses his own life in a sudden, ordinary accident, deepening the play's poignancy.

Symbolism — “The open garden gate, the bees, the weeds and the crab apples.”

Mr Lamb's always-open gate symbolises his open mind and acceptance; the weeds he refuses to pull up symbolise that nothing should be rejected merely for its label; the garden represents a healing, welcoming world free of prejudice.

Metaphor — “'On the face of it' / 'a burnt face is only a small thing'.”

The 'face' becomes a metaphor for surface appearance as opposed to inner reality, while Mr Lamb's view of the face reduces the disfigurement to one small part of a larger whole.

Dialogue and conflict — “The entire play unfolds through the conversation between Derry and Mr Lamb.”

As a radio play, character, theme and conflict are revealed almost wholly through dialogue. The verbal clash between Derry's bitterness and Mr Lamb's optimism drives the drama and exposes their inner lives.

Imagery — “The buzzing bees, ripening fruit, the warm summer garden and the falling ladder.”

Vivid auditory and visual imagery—suited to a radio play—creates the lush, alive atmosphere of the garden and sharpens the shock of the final fall and silence.

Foreshadowing — “Mr Lamb's repeated talk of death, of weeds, and his climbing to pick fruit hint at the coming tragedy.”

Subtle hints—Mr Lamb's musings on life and death and his readiness to climb for crab apples—prepare the reader for the abrupt, tragic ending.

Mr Lamb

Mr Lamb is an old man with a tin (artificial) leg, mocked in childhood as 'Lamey-Lamb'. Despite his own disability and loneliness, he is warm, wise, optimistic and welcoming. His garden gate is always open and he befriends everyone, especially children. He refuses to pity Derry or fear his face, treating him as a complete human being. Through his philosophy—that hatred and fear cripple more than any wound, and that one must stay open to life—he becomes a healer and mentor. His sudden death is deeply tragic, but the hope he plants in Derry lives on.

Derry's Mother

Derry's mother appears only briefly but represents the protective yet limiting attitude of society. She loves Derry but, out of fear and prejudice, distrusts Mr Lamb and tries to stop Derry from returning. Significantly, Derry says she kisses only the good side of his face, hinting at an unconscious discomfort with his scar that has deepened his isolation.

Long Answer Questions
Q. 'The actual pain or inconvenience caused by a disability is often much less than the sense of alienation felt by the person.' Discuss with reference to Derry and Mr Lamb in 'On the Face of It'.

Susan Hill's play powerfully demonstrates that the deepest wound of disability is not physical but emotional—the alienation, rejection and self-pity it produces. Derry's acid-burnt face causes him little ongoing physical pain, yet the staring, fear and pity of others have made him bitter, withdrawn and convinced that no one can love him; even his mother kisses only the good side of his face. His real suffering is the loneliness and the loss of self-worth. Mr Lamb, lame since childhood and once mocked as 'Lamey-Lamb', has chosen the opposite path: he refuses to let his tin leg or others' attitudes isolate him, keeping his gate and heart open. Through gentle, fearless conversation he teaches Derry that hatred, fear and self-pity cripple far more than any scar, and that what matters is the person within and the use one makes of one's life. Derry begins to heal, gaining hope and the courage to defy his mother and return. Thus the play shows that society's attitude and one's own response to disability—rather than the disability itself—determine the depth of one's suffering, and that acceptance and openness can overcome alienation. The tragic irony of Mr Lamb's death does not undo this lesson; the hope he kindles in Derry endures.

Q. Compare and contrast the characters and attitudes of Derry and Mr Lamb. How does their meeting change Derry?

Derry and Mr Lamb are alike in being physically disabled and socially isolated, but they respond to their condition in opposite ways. Derry, only fourteen, is bitter, suspicious and self-pitying; his acid-scarred face has made him expect rejection, so he avoids people and has built a wall of resentment around himself. Mr Lamb, though old and lame, is warm, optimistic and welcoming; he keeps his gate open, befriends everyone and finds joy in his bees, fruit and weeds. Where Derry sees his disability as a curse, Mr Lamb regards a defect as merely one small part of a whole person and refuses to be defined by it. Their meeting transforms Derry: Mr Lamb's refusal to fear or pity him, and his philosophy that openness and courage matter more than appearance, awaken in Derry a new hope. For the first time Derry talks freely, begins to think differently about himself and the world, and resolves to return—even defying his fearful mother. Although Mr Lamb dies before Derry can fully benefit from his friendship, the change he has set in motion is real and lasting. Thus the contrast between the two characters carries the play's central message about acceptance, attitude and looking beyond appearances.

Reference to Context (Extract-based)
MR LAMB: ... A weed is a flower, too, once you get to know it. ... It's all relative. Beauty and the beast.
Q. What does Mr Lamb mean by saying 'a weed is a flower, too, once you get to know it'?

He means that nothing is ugly or worthless in itself; our judgement depends on our attitude and how well we know a thing. Just as weeds can be seen as flowers, so a 'disfigured' person like Derry should not be dismissed by appearance.

Q. How does this remark relate to the play's central theme?

It directly supports the theme of looking beyond appearances. Mr Lamb's view that beauty is relative urges acceptance of people regardless of outward form, which is exactly what Derry needs to learn about himself.

Q. What does this tell us about Mr Lamb's character?

It reveals him as wise, tolerant and accepting—a man who finds value in everything and refuses to judge by surface. His philosophy makes him the ideal mentor to heal Derry's wounded spirit.
