Later we move from just looking to measuring. Measuring means using a unit and a tool, for example blocks or a ruler, so we can say exactly how long something is. Measurement helps us solve small tasks: to know if a pencil will fit inside a box, or whether a ribbon is long enough for wrapping. If the object ends between two marks, explain that for this class level we choose the nearest whole centimetre with help, or we can say 'about' that number. Provide lots of guided practice: measure pencils, crayons, erasers and rulers themselves. Have children work in pairs to check each other’s placement and reading.
Also teach simple recording: write the object name and its length with the unit, e.g., 'Pencil — 12 cm'. Remind children not to start at a random number on the ruler; always line up the zero mark with the end of the object. With steady practice, children become accurate and confident in using the ruler.
Estimating means making a sensible guess about how long something is before measuring. Estimation helps children think about size and number without always using a ruler. Start with familiar items and encourage children to say a number and a unit, for example 'about 20 cm' or 'about 6 blocks'. Then measure to see how close the guess was.
Teach useful reference points: a typical pencil might be about 15 cm and a school table might be about 1 m. Children can compare unknown items to these known objects to make better guesses. Make estimation a fun activity: give points for close estimates or hold class discussions about why one estimate was better than another.
After estimating and then measuring, ask children what they learned. This reflection builds understanding of size and improves future estimates. Emphasise that estimation is a helpful skill in everyday life and that checking with measurement is how we know our estimate was correct or not.
When two pieces are placed end to end, the total length is the sum of the two lengths. This simple idea connects measurement with addition. Use real objects so children see the join and then measure the whole. Begin with small numbers and short objects to keep the activity concrete and manageable.
For practice, give children two strips of paper or two sticks with known lengths in centimetres or blocks. Ask them to join the pieces and measure the combined length. Record the lengths and write a number sentence such as 4 cm + 3 cm = 7 cm. Repeat with non-standard units like cubes: 5 cubes plus 2 cubes make 7 cubes when joined end to end.
Teachers show pictures too: draw two line segments labelled with their lengths and then draw the longer segment representing the total. This teaches children that addition can be visual and physical, not only numbers on a page. Keep the sums small and use many hands-on examples so children understand the meaning of adding lengths.
