What is Perspective?
What is perspective?
Perspective is the way we draw objects so they look as if they sit in space. Our eyes see the world in three dimensions but a sheet of paper is flat. Perspective is a set of visual rules that help us change three-dimensional view into a two-dimensional picture that looks real.
When we look at a road, the sides of the road seem to get closer and meet far away. In drawing, we show this by using lines that meet at a point on the horizon. The horizon is the level of the eyes; it shows where sky and land seem to meet. The point where lines meet is called a vanishing point. Objects above the eye level look below the horizon; objects below the eye level look above the horizon. Perspective is not magic: it is a way of recording what we see.

Eye Level and Horizon Line

Vanishing Point: One-Point Perspective

Vanishing Points: Two-Point Perspective
Two-point perspective uses two vanishing points on the horizon.
This method is for objects placed at an angle to the viewer, where the front face is not parallel to the picture plane. Each set of parallel edges recedes to its own vanishing point. For a rectangular box turned so that a corner faces you, the left-side edges go to one vanishing point and the right-side edges go to another.
To draw in two-point perspective, draw a horizon line and place two vanishing points far apart on it. Start with a vertical line that will be the closest edge of your box. From the top and bottom of this vertical, draw lines to each vanishing point. Decide the width and height by marking cross-lines between receding lines and finish the far edges. Vertical edges remain vertical and do not meet the horizon. Two-point perspective makes buildings and street corners look more natural than one-point when seen at an angle.
Use two-point perspective for city scenes, boxes turned, or any subject where no face is directly parallel to the viewer. It helps show both depth and rotation. This gradual change in tone and colour with distance is called atmospheric or aerial perspective and is very useful in landscape drawing and painting.
To use atmospheric perspective, begin by observing a real view. Notice the foreground: it has strong colours, clear edges and many details. Move your eye to the middle ground and then the background; you will see colours become cooler and less saturated, edges soften, and details are fewer.
