What is a table? Parts and purpose
A table is a grid made of rows and columns used to place information in a simple order. Each small box in the grid is called a cell. When you want to show facts, compare items or organise numbers, a table helps readers find what they need quickly. Tables are used in school for class lists, marks, timetables and science data.

Creating a table in the word processor

Moving inside a table: navigation and selection
Knowing how to move inside a table makes typing and editing much faster. Use the Tab key to move forward cell by cell; each press moves the cursor to the next cell on the right and from the last cell of a row to the first cell of the next row. Press Shift + Tab to go backwards. Arrow keys move one cell in the chosen direction: left, right, up or down. Clicking with the mouse places the cursor exactly where you want it within a cell. Double-clicking selects a word, triple-clicking may select all text in the cell in some programs.
Selecting parts of a table is useful before cutting, copying or formatting. To select one cell, click inside it and then drag to include nearby cells. To select a row, click the row selector area at the left of the table if shown, or click in a cell then use the table menu to choose Select Row. To select a column, click the column selector at the top or use the appropriate table command. To select the entire table, use the table handle that appears at the top-left corner of the table or use the Select Table command from the menu.
Selection methods differ slightly between programs, so practise each method in your word processor. Inserting and deleting rows and columns

Merging and splitting cells

To merge, select the cells that touch each other horizontally or vertically and choose Merge Cells from the table options. Remember that when you merge, the content from one cell usually remains and content from other cells may be removed or combined depending on the program, so check before you merge.
Splitting reverses the merge. Use Split Cells to divide a single cell into multiple cells by specifying how many rows and columns you want. Split is handy when the table design changes after you have typed content. Editing content: typing, deleting and formatting text in cells
Cells work like small text boxes inside the document. Click inside a cell to type or edit. To change text, place the cursor and delete or backspace the unwanted letters, or select the text and type new text. Copy and paste work the same as in the rest of the document: select the text or cells, use Copy or Cut, then place the cursor where you want and Paste.
