B.Ed in India — eligibility, exams, fees, careers

The professional teaching qualification for classes 6 to 12 in India, taken after a bachelor's or master's degree. It is regulated by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), and a B.Ed from an NCTE-recognised institution is what schools and government recruiters ask for when they hire TGT and PGT teachers. For students who already know they want to teach, the four-year ITEP after Class 12 is the newer, integrated alternative.

Know this. A B.Ed is necessary but not sufficient for a government teaching job. You also need to clear CTET or your state's TET, and then the actual recruitment exam (KVS, NVS, DSSSB, state teacher recruitment). Families often think the B.Ed itself is the job ticket; in reality the TET and recruitment exams are where the competition is, so start preparing for them during the B.Ed.

Who can apply

Under Appendix 4 of the NCTE (Recognition Norms and Procedure) Regulations, 2014, as quoted in university prospectuses: at least 50% marks in a bachelor's and/or master's degree in science, social science, humanities or commerce, or at least 55% in a B.E./B.Tech with specialisation in science and mathematics. Reserved categories get relaxation as per central or state rules. Universities also require that you studied the subject you want to teach (your 'pedagogy' subject) at graduation level, often with a minimum mark in it.

How admission works

Admission is state by state and university by university. Delhi University (through CIE and three other colleges) and several central universities admit through CUET-PG, where you write the CUET paper matching your teaching subject. Most states run a common B.Ed entrance and counselling for their government and private colleges — for example Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh — while some admit on graduation marks. IGNOU and a few open universities run a distance B.Ed only for in-service teachers with teaching experience. Before paying any fee, check that the college appears on NCTE's list of recognised institutions for the B.Ed in that year; degrees from unrecognised colleges are not accepted for government teaching jobs.

You enjoy explaining things and are patient with children and teenagers
You want a stable teaching career in government or private schools
You are preparing for CTET/state TETs, KVS, NVS or state teacher recruitment
You already hold a subject degree and want a recognised professional qualification

Think twice if

You are doing it only because it is 'a safe degree to have' with no interest in teaching
You want to teach only in colleges — that needs a master's plus NET/SET, not a B.Ed
You cannot commit to two years of regular attendance and school internship
You would enrol in a college that is not NCTE-recognised because it is cheaper or easier

The honest part

Many private B.Ed colleges exist on paper with poor attendance and teaching — check NCTE recognition and visit the campus
The internship year is demanding: lesson plans, observation, real classroom teaching
Government teacher recruitment happens in irregular cycles; waits of one to three years are common
Private school salaries in small towns can be low, and contracts are short
Teaching subjects are tied to your graduation subjects — choose your UG subjects with this in mind

What it costs

Government: Roughly ₹5,000–60,000 a year at government colleges and university departments
Private: Roughly ₹40,000–1.5 lakh a year at self-financing private colleges
Help: State fee-reimbursement and post-matric scholarships usually cover eligible reserved-category students in B.Ed. Hidden costs are internship travel, teaching aids and TET application fees.

Starting pay

Government school teachers are paid on pay-commission scales, which are secure and among the better salaries in teaching. Private school pay varies a lot — roughly ₹1.8–5 lakh a year in most schools, higher in premium international schools. Edtech content roles often ₹3–6 lakh. Stability depends on the employer.

Questions families ask

Is the B.Ed one year or two years?

It has been two years since the NCTE regulations of 2014. NCTE has proposed bringing back a one-year B.Ed for candidates with a four-year bachelor's or a master's degree; check NCTE's current notification and the university's prospectus for the year you apply.

Can I do B.Ed after B.Tech?

Yes, if you have at least 55% in a B.E./B.Tech with specialisation in science and mathematics, per NCTE norms. You would usually teach mathematics or science.

B.Ed or ITEP?

If you are still in Class 12 and sure about teaching, the four-year ITEP saves a year and combines your degree with teacher training. If you already have a degree, B.Ed is the route.

Is a distance B.Ed valid?

Only for in-service teachers, and only from institutions recognised by NCTE for the open and distance mode (such as IGNOU). A regular student cannot use it as a shortcut.

Do I need a B.Ed for teaching in colleges?

No. College and university teaching needs a master's in the subject plus UGC-NET/SET (and increasingly a PhD). A B.Ed is for school teaching.
