Hotel Management (B.Sc HHA / BHM) in India — eligibility, exams, fees, careers

Hotel management trains you to run the four core operations of a hotel — food production (kitchen), food and beverage service, front office and housekeeping — and then the management side: sales, revenue, finance and people. The national route is the B.Sc in Hospitality and Hotel Administration taught at Institutes of Hotel Management (IHMs) affiliated to the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology, under the Ministry of Tourism. It suits students who enjoy serving people, stay calm under pressure, and do not mind long hours on their feet.

Know this. The first years of hotel work are physically hard and modestly paid, and many graduates leave the industry in that phase. The ones who stay two to five years, rotate through departments and pick a direction — kitchen, rooms, sales, revenue — tend to progress well, and the skills travel: to airlines, cruise lines, hospitals, facility management, retail and customer experience roles. Families should weigh that honestly before choosing it for the glamour.

Who can apply

Class 12 (or equivalent) pass in any stream with English as a subject of study. For NCHM JEE 2026 there is no upper age limit. Candidates appearing in Class 12 can apply provisionally. Admitted students must submit a physical fitness certificate, because the course involves practical kitchen and service work.

How admission works

The central and state government IHMs and the affiliated private IHMs admit to the B.Sc HHA through NCHM JEE, conducted by the National Testing Agency, usually in April. It is a two-hour computer-based test covering numerical ability, reasoning, general knowledge, English and aptitude for the service sector. After results, NCHMCT runs online counselling in rounds where you choose institutes. Other hotel-management colleges — private universities, chains' own schools (such as those run by major hotel groups) and state university colleges — admit through their own tests or Class 12 marks. Check whether a private college's degree is from a recognised university; some 'diplomas' are not degrees at all.

You picture only a manager's desk; the first years are hands-on operations

You are uncomfortable handling alcohol, meat or cleaning tasks, which are part of the training
You expect high pay in the first job

The honest part

Long hours, split shifts, weekends and festival duty are normal
Pay in hotels starts lower than in some other service sectors; many graduates move to airlines, retail, facility management or customer experience roles for pay
Industrial training is unpaid or lightly paid
Private colleges vary a lot; many promise international placements that turn out to be internships
Chefs and entrepreneurs who build skills early can do well, but it takes years

Government: Central and state government IHMs: roughly ₹1–1.5 lakh a year in fees, plus uniforms, kits and hostel.
Private: Private hotel-management colleges and university programmes: roughly ₹1.5–4 lakh a year; international-brand schools cost more.

Starting pay

Most hotel-management graduates start around ₹15,000–30,000 a month in operational roles, sometimes with food and accommodation; chain management-trainee programmes and cruise lines can pay more. Growth depends on moving up the hierarchy or into sales, revenue, or your own business. Pay in the first two years is modest compared with the effort.

Questions families ask

Is there an age limit for NCHM JEE?

No. The NCHM JEE 2026 bulletin says there is no age restriction, in line with the National Education Policy.

Can a Science or Commerce student apply?

Yes. Any stream is eligible, as long as English was a subject in Class 12. NIOS Senior Secondary with five subjects including English is also accepted.

Which university awards the B.Sc HHA?

For the NCHMCT-affiliated IHMs, the degree is offered by the National Council for Hotel Management and recognised by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

Is a government IHM better than a private college?

Usually, for value. Central IHMs have long industry ties and lower fees. A few private schools are strong, but check recent placement lists and whether the degree is from a recognised university.

Can I go abroad after hotel management?

Many graduates work on cruise lines, in Gulf hotels, or take a master's in hospitality in Switzerland, the UK or Australia. Experience in a good Indian hotel first makes those moves easier.

Do I have to cook meat or serve alcohol?

The training covers all food and beverage operations, including non-vegetarian cooking and bar service. Some students negotiate within the rules, but you should expect to handle both.
