CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst)

The CFA charter is a global professional credential in investment analysis and portfolio management, awarded by CFA Institute, a US-based non-profit.

  • 2½–4 years
  • Any stream

The CFA charter is a global professional credential in investment analysis and portfolio management, awarded by CFA Institute, a US-based non-profit. You pass three exams — Level I, II and III — gain relevant work experience and join CFA Institute to use the designation. In India it is valued in equity research, asset management, wealth management and investment banking, and it can be taken alongside a degree or a job.

Know this. Families often compare the CFA to CA as if they were alternatives. They are not: CA is an Indian statutory licence for audit and tax; the CFA is an investment credential with no legal role in India. The CFA opens doors when paired with internships and a relevant first job, not on its own — 'Level I cleared' on a fresher's CV helps, but it is not a job offer.

Getting in

CFA Program — Chartered Financial Analyst charter, CFA Institute (USA), pursued from India

Who can apply

CFA Institute requires a bachelor's degree (or being close enough to graduation, within limits set for each level), or an alternative of relevant professional work experience, plus a valid international passport, since exams are given in English at test centres and CFA Institute identifies candidates by passport. To earn the charter you must pass all three exams, complete 4,000 hours of relevant professional work experience over a minimum of three years, and become a CFA Institute member.

How admission works

There is no entrance exam and no college. You create an account with CFA Institute, register for Level I in a chosen testing window, pay the exam fee in US dollars, and study on your own using CFA Institute's curriculum, often with a prep provider. Exams are computer-based at test centres in several Indian cities. CFA Institute offers exams in multiple windows a year — usually February, May, August and November — though not every level is offered in every window. You may sit an exam at most twice a calendar year, not in consecutive windows or within six months of the last attempt, and you have up to six attempts per level. After Level III you submit your work experience and references and apply for membership to be awarded the charter.

Duration
Usually 2.5–4 years to pass all three levels; the charter also needs 4,000 hours of relevant work over at least three years

What you study

  • Ethical and professional standards (tested at every level)
  • Quantitative methods and economics
  • Financial statement analysis and corporate issuers
  • Equity investments and fixed income
  • Derivatives and alternative investments
  • Portfolio management and wealth planning
  • Level I: multiple-choice questions on concepts and tools
  • Level II: vignette-based questions on valuation and analysis
  • Level III: portfolio management and wealth planning, with vignette-based essay and multiple-choice questions, and a choice of pathway

Specialisations: Portfolio management pathway (Level III) · Private wealth pathway (Level III) · Private markets pathway (Level III)

Is it you?

A good fit if

  • You want to work in equity research, asset management, portfolio management or wealth management
  • You can study 300 or more hours per level on your own, often while working
  • You are comfortable with accounting, valuation and statistics
  • You want an internationally recognised credential that travels across countries
  • You are already in or close to an investment role and want to deepen your skill

Think twice if

  • You want to audit, sign accounts or practise tax in India — that needs a CA
  • You expect the CFA alone to get you a finance job without internships or experience
  • The dollar-denominated fees would be a large strain for your family
  • You want a classroom programme with a campus and placements
  • You dislike self-study over several years

The honest part

  • Pass rates at each level are around or below half, and many candidates need repeat attempts.
  • Each level needs several months of steady study; most people study while working or in college.
  • Fees are in US dollars and rise over time; a weak rupee makes it more expensive.
  • The charter is only awarded after the work-experience requirement is met, even if you pass all three levels.
  • In India the credential is strongest in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Gurugram and other finance hubs.

What it costs

Government
Not applicable — CFA Institute is a private non-profit. From 2026 exam fees are about USD 1,140 early-bird or USD 1,490 standard for Levels I and II, and USD 1,240 or USD 1,590 for Level III; CFA Institute removed the one-time USD 350 enrollment fee from April 2025.
Private
All three levels cost roughly USD 3,500–4,600 in exam fees (about ₹3–4 lakh at recent exchange rates), plus prep materials or coaching of roughly ₹20,000–1.5 lakh per level if you use them.
Help
CFA Institute offers Access Scholarships for candidates who cannot afford full fees and student scholarships through partner universities; both reduce the exam fee.

Rough 2026 ranges to compare routes. Fees differ by college and state and change every year.

Or start work as

  • Equity research analyst at brokerages and research firms
  • Investment analyst or associate at mutual funds, PMS and asset managers
  • Credit or fixed-income analyst at banks, rating agencies and funds
  • Wealth manager or investment adviser at private banks and wealth firms
  • Valuation or transaction analyst at advisory firms and global capability centres
  • Risk analyst at banks and investment firms

Starting pay

For a graduate who has cleared Level I or II and joins as an analyst, first jobs in India often pay around ₹5–12 lakh a year; charterholders with experience in fund management or research earn much more. The pay reflects the role and firm more than the credential, and many CFA candidates in India work in support roles at capability centres at the lower end of this band. These are rough figures.

Questions families ask

Can I start CFA while still in college?

Yes, within CFA Institute's rules on how close to graduation you must be for each level. Many Indian students take Level I in their final year of B.Com, BBA, economics or engineering.

Do I need a passport?

Yes. CFA Institute requires a valid international travel passport to register and to sit the exam, even in India.

CFA or MBA in finance?

An MBA from a strong institute gives placements, a network and a broader set of roles. The CFA gives deep investment skills at lower cost and can be done while working. Many finance professionals do both, often an MBA followed by the CFA or the other way round.

How many attempts do I get?

Up to six attempts per level, and at most two exam attempts in a calendar year, not in back-to-back windows or within six months of each other.

Is the CFA recognised in India?

It is widely respected by Indian investment firms, banks and asset managers, and some regulatory roles accept it as a qualification. It does not give any statutory right to audit or practise accountancy.
