A master's in the health of populations rather than individual patients — epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy, health systems, nutrition, environmental and community health. It suits doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists and AYUSH graduates who want to move beyond clinics, and increasingly graduates from life sciences, social work, economics, engineering and management who want to work in health programmes, research and policy.
Know this. Public health in India is largely a project-funded field. Many first jobs are one- to three-year contracts tied to a grant or a government mission, not permanent posts. That is normal and people build strong careers this way — but families who expect a secure salaried job right after the MPH are often surprised. Pick an institute with strong field placements, because your first job usually comes through them.
Getting in
Master of Public Health
Who can apply
There is no single national rule for the MPH; each university sets its own. Some institutes take graduates of any discipline — the Indian Institute of Public Health, Hyderabad, for example, asks for a bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least 50% marks and welcomes medical, biological, veterinary, management, social-work, engineering, law and commerce backgrounds. Others limit entry to health-science graduates (MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, life sciences). Relevant work experience strengthens an application everywhere.
How admission works
Admission is institute by institute. The Indian Institutes of Public Health (Gandhinagar, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar, Shillong), set up with the Public Health Foundation of India, run their own applications, usually with a written test and/or interview. TISS admits to its public-health master's using CUET-PG scores. Several AIIMS, central and state universities, and private universities (Manipal and others) run MPH programmes with their own tests or merit lists. Some medical colleges offer MD Community Medicine instead — that is a clinical postgraduate route through NEET-PG and only for MBBS graduates.

- CUET-PG

Is it you?
A good fit if
- You are a health professional who cares about why patients get sick in the first place
- You enjoy data, fieldwork and writing reports
- You want to work on government health programmes, NGOs, research projects or international agencies
- You have a year or two of health or development work experience
- You are comfortable with contract-based project jobs in the early years
Think twice if
- You want a clinical career — an MPH does not make you a specialist doctor
- You need a guaranteed permanent job right after the course
- You dislike statistics and field travel
- You are choosing it only as a fallback after not getting an MD/MS seat, with no interest in population health
The honest part
- The quality of MPH programmes varies widely; check faculty, field placements and where graduates work
- Permanent government public-health posts are few; contract roles dominate early years
- Statistical and data skills decide who gets the better-paid jobs
- Non-medical graduates can do very well, but some government roles prefer MBBS + MPH
- An MPH abroad (UK, US, Australia) is expensive; do it only if you plan an international career
What it costs
- Government
- Roughly ₹20,000–1.5 lakh a year at government universities and AIIMS-type institutes
- Private
- Roughly ₹1–3 lakh a year; IIPH Hyderabad, for example, lists tuition of about ₹2.25–2.55 lakh for the two years plus university fees
- Help
- Some IIPH campuses and NGOs offer partial scholarships; health-department employees may get sponsored seats. Check each institute's brochure.
Rough 2026 ranges to compare routes. Fees differ by college and state and change every year.

Questions families ask
Can a non-medical graduate do an MPH?
Yes, at many institutes. IIPH Hyderabad, for example, accepts a bachelor's in any discipline with 50%. Some programmes still restrict entry to health-science graduates, so read each eligibility page.
MPH or MD Community Medicine?
MD Community Medicine is a three-year clinical PG for MBBS graduates, through NEET-PG, and qualifies you to teach community medicine in medical colleges. MPH is open to many backgrounds and is aimed at programmes, research and policy.
Is an Indian MPH respected?
Yes, from good institutes. Graduates of the IIPHs, TISS, AIIMS and strong universities work across government, NGOs and international agencies.
Should I work before an MPH?
It helps. Even a year in a hospital, NGO or research project makes the coursework make sense and strengthens your application and later job search.
Can I do a PhD after an MPH?
Yes. Many public-health researchers go on to a PhD in India or abroad; your dissertation and publications during the MPH count heavily.
What skills should I build during the MPH?
Get comfortable with one statistics package (R or Stata), learn to design a survey and clean field data, and write at least one report or paper that you can show an employer. Short internships with a state health mission, a research group or an NGO are often how first jobs come, so use every vacation.
