📖 Detailed Explanation

The story opens in a strange kingdom ruled by a foolish king and an equally foolish minister. They had decided to turn the order of the world upside down. They ordered that night would be day and day would be night. So everyone had to be awake at night and work, and sleep during the day. Anyone who disobeyed would be punished with death. The frightened people obeyed, and the whole kingdom slept by day and worked by night, like owls and ghosts.

The king made another absurd rule: that all things in the market would cost the same — just one duddu (a small coin). Whether you bought a measure of rice or a bunch of bananas, everything cost a single duddu. There was no difference between expensive and cheap things. This pleased the foolish people, but it showed how irrational and senseless the kingdom's governance was.

One day a guru and his disciple, who were travelling, arrived in this city. They saw that everyone slept by day and the streets were empty. At night the place came alive with activity. The wise guru at once understood that this was a city of fools where nothing made sense. He warned his disciple, 'This is no place for us. Nothing here is right. Let us leave at once before we get into trouble. Fools can be dangerous; you never know what they will do.' So the guru left the kingdom.

But the disciple did not want to leave. He loved the idea that everything was cheap, costing only one duddu. He thought it was a wonderful place where he could eat as much as he liked very cheaply. Against the guru's advice, he decided to stay back. He began to eat well, grew fat and happy. The guru went away, telling him he could come and find him whenever he was in trouble.

Meanwhile, in the city, a thief broke into a rich merchant's house. While he was carrying away the stolen goods, the old wall of the house collapsed on him and crushed him to death. The thief's brother went straight to the king and complained that justice must be done — his brother had died because of the badly built wall.

The foolish king agreed and summoned the merchant whose wall it was. The merchant blamed the man who built the wall. The bricklayer was called; he said the fault lay with the dancing girl who had walked up and down that street, distracting him while he worked. The dancing girl was summoned; she blamed the goldsmith who had made her come to his shop again and again, delaying her, so she had to walk back and forth. The goldsmith was brought in; he in turn blamed the rich merchant's father, for whom he had made a wedding ornament long ago, which had kept the goldsmith so busy that he made the dancing girl wait. Through this ridiculous chain of blame, the king's foolish logic kept passing the guilt from one person to the next.

Since the merchant's father was dead, his son had to bear the punishment. The king ordered that this merchant be executed. But there was a problem: the merchant was thin and frail, while the execution stake that had been prepared was thick and meant for a fat man. The foolish king ordered his servants to find a fat man to fit the stake. The disciple, who had been eating well and had grown nice and plump, was the perfect fit. He was seized and dragged to be executed in place of the merchant.

The terrified disciple realised his mistake and remembered his guru. He prayed to him for help. Through his divine power, the guru came to know that his disciple was in danger and rushed to the city. He saw the disciple about to be hanged and quickly thought of a clever plan to save him. He whispered something into the disciple's ear, then went to the king.

The guru and the disciple then began to quarrel, each insisting that he should be the one to die first on the stake. This puzzled the king. He asked them why they were so eager to be hanged. The clever guru told the king a lie: 'This is a very special, auspicious moment. Whoever dies on this stake right now will be reborn as the king of this country in the next life, and the one who dies next will be born as its minister. That is why we both want to die first.' The greedy, foolish king believed him at once.

Wanting the throne for himself in the next life, the king decided that he and his minister would die on the stake instead. He let the guru and disciple go. That night, in secret, the king and the minister went to the execution ground and were hanged on the stake. With the foolish king and minister dead, the people of the kingdom were left without rulers. They begged the guru and the disciple to become their new king and minister. The guru agreed on one condition — that he would change all the senseless laws and run the kingdom sensibly. From then on, day was day and night was night, and things cost their proper prices. The kingdom returned to order, and wisdom finally triumphed over folly.

📝 Summary

A foolish king and his minister rule a kingdom where everything is turned upside down: people sleep by day and work by night, and every item in the market costs just one duddu. A wandering guru sees the folly and leaves, but his disciple stays because everything is so cheap, and he grows fat. When a thief is crushed by a falling wall, the king's absurd chain of reasoning shifts the blame from the merchant to the bricklayer, the dancing girl, the goldsmith and finally the merchant's dead father, so the merchant must die. As the merchant is too thin for the prepared stake, the plump disciple is seized to be hanged in his place. The disciple prays for his guru, who arrives and tricks the king by claiming that whoever dies on the stake at that auspicious moment will be reborn as king. The greedy king and minister hang themselves to gain the throne in the next life, and the grateful people make the guru and disciple their rulers, restoring sense to the kingdom.

💡 Central Idea

The story satirically shows that when foolishness rules a land, justice becomes absurd and life turns chaotic, but wisdom and presence of mind can outwit even the most senseless power. It teaches that good sense and rational thinking are essential, and that those without wisdom are dangerous to themselves and others.

🎯 Themes

  • Folly versus wisdom: The whole story contrasts the senseless rule of fools with the calm intelligence of the guru. Foolish authority causes injustice, while wisdom restores order — proving that good sense is more powerful than blind authority.

  • Satire on irrational governance and injustice: Through the absurd 'one duddu' rule and the ridiculous chain of blame, the story mocks rulers who make laws and pass judgements without logic, where the truly guilty escape and the innocent are punished.

  • Consequences of greed and temptation: The disciple ignores his guru's warning out of greed for cheap food and almost loses his life, while the king's greed for a future throne destroys him. The story shows how greed clouds judgement and leads to ruin.

  • Importance of presence of mind: The guru saves two lives not by force but by his quick thinking, turning the king's own foolishness and greed against him. Intelligence and timely action triumph over danger.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

The story conveys that we must always use reason and wisdom, and never let greed or temptation overrule our better judgement. It also warns that foolish, unjust authority brings chaos, and that a wise person can use intelligence to overcome even the most dangerous situations. Above all, good sense must guide every decision in life.

Justification of the Title

The title 'In the Kingdom of Fools' is perfectly apt because the entire story is set in a land where foolishness rules at every level. The king and minister are fools who make absurd laws — turning night into day and pricing everything at one duddu. The people foolishly obey, the system of justice is foolish, and even the king's eventual death comes from believing a foolish lie about being reborn as king. The title prepares the reader for a world of comic absurdity and at the same time hints at the satire on senseless authority. It also highlights, by contrast, the wisdom of the guru, whose good sense stands out sharply against this kingdom of fools.

👤 Character Sketches

The Guru

The guru is the embodiment of wisdom and presence of mind in the story. As soon as he enters the city, he recognises the folly around him and wisely decides to leave, warning that fools are dangerous. He is caring towards his disciple and comes back to rescue him when called. Most importantly, he is clever and resourceful — instead of using force, he cunningly uses the king's own greed and foolishness to save two lives and restore order to the kingdom. He represents reason, foresight and sound judgement.

The Disciple

The disciple is well-meaning but foolish and greedy. Tempted by the cheapness of food, he ignores his wise guru's warning and stays back in the kingdom of fools, eating his fill and growing fat. His greed nearly costs him his life, as his plumpness makes him the chosen victim for the stake. Only when he is in mortal danger does he remember his guru. He represents the ordinary person who is easily swayed by temptation and learns the value of wisdom the hard way.

The King

The king is the chief fool of the story. He makes absurd laws, turning night into day and fixing all prices at one duddu. He delivers senseless judgements, condemning innocent people through a ridiculous chain of blame. His foolishness is matched by his greed: hoping to be reborn as king, he eagerly hangs himself on his own execution stake. He symbolises irrational, unjust authority that ultimately destroys itself.

Long Answer Questions
Q. Describe the chain of blame that followed the thief's death, and explain what it reveals about the kingdom's idea of justice.

When a thief was crushed to death by the falling wall of a merchant's house, his brother demanded justice from the king. The king began an absurd chain of blame. First the merchant was blamed for the bad wall; the merchant blamed the bricklayer who built it; the bricklayer blamed the dancing girl whose walking up and down had distracted him; the dancing girl blamed the goldsmith who had made her come to his shop again and again, delaying her; and the goldsmith finally blamed the merchant's dead father, for whose ornament he had once been kept busy. Since the father was dead, his son the merchant had to be punished. This ridiculous chain reveals that justice in the kingdom was completely irrational and senseless. The real cause — a badly built wall, or indeed the thief's own crime — was ignored, and guilt was passed from one innocent person to another until it fell on someone who could be conveniently punished. It is a sharp satire on a system where the powerful and foolish judge without reason, the guilty escape, and the innocent suffer. It shows how dangerous and unjust a society becomes when fools hold power.

Q. 'Wisdom triumphs over folly.' Discuss how this statement is proved in the story 'In the Kingdom of Fools'.

The entire story is built on the contrast between the folly of the king and his people and the wisdom of the guru, and in the end wisdom clearly triumphs. The foolish king makes irrational laws and delivers senseless judgements, plunging the kingdom into a topsy-turvy state. The disciple, too, behaves foolishly out of greed and falls into mortal danger. In contrast, the guru shows wisdom at every step: he recognises the folly of the kingdom at once and leaves it; he returns to save his disciple when called; and instead of fighting, he uses his presence of mind to defeat the fools with their own weaknesses. By spreading the clever lie that whoever dies on the stake will be reborn as king, he turns the king's greed and foolishness against him. The greedy king and minister hang themselves, and the kingdom is left without rulers. The grateful people then beg the guru and disciple to rule, and the guru agrees only on condition that he may change the senseless laws. Thus the kingdom of fools is finally set right by wisdom. The story proves that good sense, foresight and clever thinking are more powerful than brute authority, and that folly, especially in those who rule, ultimately destroys itself while wisdom prevails.
