About the author: Oscar Wilde, an Irish writer known for his wit and literary brilliance, wrote The Happy Prince to convey deep moral lessons through a simple yet profound fairy tale.
📖 Detailed Explanation
High above the city, on a tall column, stood the statue of the Happy Prince. He was gilded all over with thin leaves of fine gold; for eyes he had two bright blue sapphires, and a large red ruby glowed on his sword-hilt. He was much admired by the townspeople. A practical mother told her crying son to be like the Happy Prince who never dreamed of crying for anything. A disappointed man was glad there was someone in the world quite happy, and the Charity Children said he looked like an angel. Thus the Prince was famous for being a symbol of perfect, untroubled happiness.

One night a little Swallow flew over the city. His friends had gone to Egypt six weeks before, but he had stayed behind because he was in love with a beautiful Reed. He had courted her all summer, but the other swallows mocked him because the Reed had no money and too many relations. When autumn came, the Reed would not travel with him, so the Swallow left her and flew towards Egypt. Tired after a long day's flight, he decided to rest for the night between the feet of the statue of the Happy Prince.

As the Swallow was about to sleep, a large drop of water fell on him, then another. The sky was cloudless and full of stars, yet it was raining. Looking up, the Swallow saw that the eyes of the Happy Prince were filled with tears running down his golden cheeks. The Prince explained that when he was alive he lived in the Palace of Sans-Souci, where sorrow was not allowed to enter. By day he played in the garden and by night he led the dance, surrounded by high walls, and never cared to ask what lay beyond them. His courtiers called him the Happy Prince, and happy indeed he was, if pleasure be happiness. Now that he was dead, set high above the city, he could see all the ugliness and misery of his city, and though his heart was made of lead, he could not help weeping.

The Prince pointed to a poor house far away where a tired seamstress sat sewing passion-flowers on a satin gown for one of the Queen's maids of honour. In a corner of the room her little boy lay ill with fever, asking for oranges, but the mother had only river water to give him. The Prince begged the Swallow to pluck the ruby from his sword-hilt and carry it to her. At first the Swallow refused, saying his friends were waiting in Egypt and that he disliked boys who once threw stones at swallows. But seeing the Prince so sad, the kind little Swallow agreed to stay one night and be his messenger. He carried the great ruby, flew over the city, past the palace and the river, and laid it on the table beside the woman's thimble. He then fanned the sick child's forehead with his wings, and the boy felt cooler and fell into a peaceful sleep.

The next night the Swallow prepared to leave for Egypt, dreaming of warm places and the wonders of that land. But the Prince asked him to stay one more night. He spoke of a young playwright in a garret across the city, trying to finish a play for the Theatre Director, but too cold and hungry to write any more. The Prince had no more jewels except his eyes, made of rare sapphires brought from India a thousand years ago. He asked the Swallow to pluck out one sapphire and take it to the writer. The Swallow wept, unwilling to do it, but obeyed the Prince. He carried the jewel to the student, who thought it a token of admiration from someone, and was filled with joy enough to finish his play.

On the third night the Swallow came to say goodbye for the last time, promising to bring the Prince beautiful red and yellow jewels from Egypt instead. But the Prince showed him a little match-girl in the square below, who had let her matches fall into the gutter and spoilt them. Her father would beat her if she brought no money home, and she was crying, having no shoes or stockings and no covering for her head. The Prince asked the Swallow to take out his other sapphire eye and give it to the girl so she would not be beaten. The Swallow protested that this would make the Prince blind, but the Prince insisted. So the Swallow plucked out the remaining eye and slipped it into the girl's palm; she laughed and ran home delighted. Now the Prince was completely blind.

The Swallow now refused to leave the blind Prince, and stayed with him always, sitting on his shoulder and telling him stories of strange lands. The Prince asked the Swallow instead to fly over his city and tell him what he saw there. So the Swallow flew over the great city and saw the rich making merry in their beautiful houses, while the beggars sat at the gates. He saw the white faces of starving children looking out into the dark streets, and under a bridge two little boys lying in each other's arms to keep warm, driven out by a watchman into the rain. The Prince told the Swallow to take the fine gold leaf-by-leaf from his body and give it to the poor, for living people always think gold can make them happy. So the Swallow stripped off the gold until the Prince looked dull and grey, and the poor children's faces grew rosier and they laughed and played in the streets.

Then the snow and frost came, and the bitter cold set in. The poor little Swallow grew colder and colder, but he would not leave the Prince, for he loved him too truly. He gathered a few crumbs to keep alive, but he knew he was going to die. With his last strength he flew up to the Prince's shoulder and asked leave to kiss his hand. The Prince was glad the Swallow was at last going to Egypt, but the Swallow said he was going to the House of Death, for Death is the brother of Sleep. He kissed the Happy Prince on the lips and fell down dead at his feet. At that very moment a strange crack sounded inside the statue, as if something had broken. In fact, the leaden heart of the Prince had snapped right in two from the hard frost — and from grief.

The next morning the Mayor and the Town Councillors, walking in the square, noticed how shabby the Happy Prince now looked — without his ruby, his sapphire eyes, or his gold, and with a dead bird at his feet. They declared he was little better than a beggar and pulled the statue down. The art professors said that as he was no longer beautiful he was no longer useful, so they melted the statue in a furnace. But the broken leaden heart would not melt, so it was thrown on a dust-heap where the dead Swallow also lay. When God asked one of His Angels to bring Him the two most precious things in the city, the Angel brought the leaden heart and the dead bird. God approved, saying that in His garden of Paradise the little bird would sing for evermore, and in His city of gold the Happy Prince would praise Him. Thus selfless love and sacrifice were honoured as the most precious things of all.

📝 Summary
The statue of the Happy Prince stands high above the city, gilded with gold, with sapphire eyes and a ruby on his sword, admired by all as a symbol of happiness. A little Swallow, left behind by his flock, shelters at the statue's feet and discovers the Prince weeping. The Prince explains that, raised in a palace free of sorrow, he never knew suffering; but now, set high above the city, he sees all its misery. He persuades the Swallow to act as his messenger, giving away his ruby to a poor sick seamstress, one sapphire eye to a starving young playwright, and the other to a little match-girl — leaving himself blind. The loyal Swallow stays on, stripping the Prince's gold leaf by leaf for the poor. Winter comes; the faithful Swallow, refusing to leave, kisses the Prince and dies of cold at his feet, and the Prince's leaden heart cracks in two. The Mayor, finding the statue shabby, pulls it down and melts it, but the broken heart will not melt and is thrown out with the dead bird. God declares the leaden heart and the dead Swallow the two most precious things in the city, granting them eternal life in Paradise.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea of the story is that true happiness and real worth lie not in wealth, beauty or outward splendour, but in compassion, selfless love and the willingness to sacrifice oneself for the suffering of others. The Prince and the Swallow give away everything they have — jewels, gold, sight and life itself — and are finally judged by God to be the most precious things in the city.

🎯 Themes
Compassion and selfless sacrifice: Both the Prince and the Swallow give up what is dearest to them — jewels, gold, sight and life — purely for the welfare of strangers, showing that genuine love expresses itself in self-denial and service.

Social inequality and the plight of the poor: Wilde contrasts the rich making merry in fine houses with starving children, an overworked seamstress and a beaten match-girl, exposing the cruel gap between wealth and poverty in society.

The emptiness of outward beauty and material wealth: The Prince is admired only while glittering with gold and jewels; once stripped, he is called a beggar and melted down. True value, the story argues, lies in the inner heart, not the shining surface.

Loyalty, friendship and love unto death: The little Swallow's growing devotion to the Prince, choosing to stay through deadly winter rather than fly to warm Egypt, celebrates faithful friendship and love that endures even unto death.

🧭 Message & Title
The story teaches us to look beyond our own comfort and to feel for the pain of others. Real greatness and lasting happiness come from kindness, generosity and sacrifice, not from riches or appearances. What the worldly call worthless — a broken leaden heart and a dead bird — may in fact be the most precious things in the eyes of God.

The title 'The Happy Prince' is deeply ironic and meaningful. When alive in his palace, the Prince was called 'happy' because he knew only pleasure and never saw any sorrow, but his happiness was shallow and ignorant. As a statue he weeps constantly at the misery of his people, so he seems anything but happy. Yet the title is finally justified, for the Prince finds true and lasting happiness in giving away everything to relieve suffering — a joy far deeper than the empty pleasure of his palace days. He is truly 'happy' only when he becomes selfless and is rewarded by God with eternal life.

👤 Character Sketches
The Happy Prince is the statue around whom the story revolves. In life he lived shut away in the Palace of Sans-Souci, knowing only pleasure; as a statue raised above the city, he becomes deeply compassionate, weeping at the suffering he now sees. He is selfless and generous to the point of giving away his ruby, both sapphire eyes and all his gold to the poor, choosing blindness and ugliness over keeping his treasures. His leaden heart, which finally breaks from grief, represents true, enduring love and makes him, in God's eyes, one of the most precious things in the city.

The little Swallow is the Prince's loyal helper and friend. At first light-hearted and a little vain — he had loved a Reed and longs for the warmth of Egypt — he gradually grows tender and devoted. Moved by the Prince's tears, he agrees to stay 'one night' that becomes many, carrying out every errand of mercy. Out of deepening love he refuses to abandon the blind Prince even as deadly winter comes, and dies kissing him. The Swallow embodies kindness, loyalty and self-sacrifice, and is rewarded with eternal song in God's Paradise.

The Mayor and the Councillors represent the shallow, materialistic values of worldly society. They admire the Prince only while he is golden and bejewelled, and once he is dull they scorn him as a beggar and pull him down. Vain and quarrelsome, each Councillor wishes to have a statue of himself put up instead. They serve as a foil to the selfless Prince and Swallow, highlighting how society judges by appearance and wealth rather than by goodness of heart.

Because they represented selfless love and sacrifice. The Prince had given away all his wealth and sight for the poor, and the Swallow had given its very life in his service. To God, such goodness was worth more than all the gold and jewels in the city.

The friendship begins by chance when the homeless Swallow shelters between the feet of the statue and is surprised by the Prince's falling tears. Moved by the Prince's grief over the city's poor, the Swallow agrees to stay just one night to carry the ruby to the sick seamstress's home. One night becomes another as he delivers a sapphire to the starving playwright and the second sapphire to the match-girl, even though it leaves the Prince blind. With each act of kindness the bond between them deepens: the Swallow stops longing for Egypt, sits on the Prince's shoulder, tells him stories of far lands, and finally refuses to leave him even when deadly winter comes. He strips the Prince's gold for the poor and at last, too weak and cold, kisses the Prince and dies at his feet, at which the Prince's leaden heart breaks. Their friendship teaches us that true love is selfless and sacrificial, that real companionship means standing by a friend in hardship rather than seeking one's own comfort, and that such love, though it may end in death and seem worthless to the world, is the most precious thing of all in the eyes of God.

Through a simple fairy tale, Oscar Wilde sharply criticises the injustice and shallow values of his society. The Prince, when alive, was deliberately shut away in a palace where 'sorrow is not allowed to enter', so that the ruling class remained ignorant of the suffering of ordinary people. As a statue he finally sees the truth: a seamstress slaving over a gown for a Queen's maid of honour while her own child starves, a gifted young writer too cold and hungry to work, a barefoot match-girl beaten if she earns no money, and starving children watching the rich make merry in warm houses. This bitter contrast between luxury and want exposes the cruelty of social inequality. Wilde also attacks the false values by which society judges worth: the townsfolk and the Mayor admire the Prince only while he glitters with gold and jewels, but the moment he is dull and bare they call him 'little better than a beggar' and melt him down, and the vain Councillors squabble over whose statue should replace him. The art professor declares that since the Prince is 'no longer beautiful he is no longer useful' — judging everything by appearance and utility. Against all this Wilde sets the true values of compassion, generosity and sacrifice embodied by the Prince and the Swallow, and lets God, not society, deliver the final verdict by honouring the broken leaden heart and the dead bird. The story thus urges readers to reject the worship of wealth and appearance and to value kindness to the poor and suffering instead.
