About the author: William Blake was an English poet, painter, and printmaker known for his visionary works that combined art and poetry to challenge social norms and explore human emotions.

✍️ About the Author / Poet

William Blake (1757-1827) was an English poet, painter, engraver and printmaker, today regarded as one of the great figures of the Romantic Age, though he was little recognised in his own lifetime. Born in London to a hosier's family, he had almost no formal schooling and was largely self-taught, claiming to have seen visions from early childhood. He trained as an engraver and developed a unique 'illuminated printing' method in which he etched his poems together with his own hand-coloured illustrations on a single plate, so that word and image worked as one. His most famous works, 'Songs of Innocence' (1789) and 'Songs of Experience' (1794) - later combined as 'Songs of Innocence and of Experience: Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul' - present life through two opposed visions: the joyful, trusting world of the child and the fallen, oppressive world of the adult. A radical thinker, Blake fiercely criticised the social injustice, organised religion, exploitation and rationalism of his age, and celebrated imagination, energy and human compassion. The two poems studied here, 'The Divine Image' and 'The Human Abstract', are deliberate companion pieces - one from Innocence, the other from Experience - that must be read together.

📖 Stanza-wise Explanation

THE DIVINE IMAGE
To Mercy, Pity, Peace, and Love
All pray in their distress;
And to these virtues of delight
Return their thankfulness.

The poem opens by naming four great virtues - Mercy, Pity, Peace and Love. When people are in trouble or sorrow ('distress'), it is to these virtues that everyone prays. And when they are happy and grateful, it is again to these same 'virtues of delight' that they return their thanks. Thus these qualities are at the centre of human life in both grief and joy.

For Mercy, Pity, Peace, and Love,
Is God our father dear;
And Mercy, Pity, Peace, and Love,
Is Man his child and care.

Blake now says that these four virtues are God himself - 'God our father dear' is nothing other than Mercy, Pity, Peace and Love. But the very same four virtues are also Man, who is God's child and the object of His loving care. The repetition makes God and Man meet in the same set of qualities: the divine and the human share one nature.

For Mercy has a human heart,
Pity a human face,
And Love, the human form divine,
And Peace, the human dress.

Here Blake gives each abstract virtue a part of the human body. Mercy has a human heart; Pity has a human face; Love is 'the human form divine' (the whole human shape, which is itself divine); and Peace is the human 'dress' or clothing. In other words, these heavenly virtues are not far-off ideas - they live and appear in the actual body, face and form of a human being.

Then every man, of every clime,
That prays in his distress,
Prays to the human form divine,
Love, Mercy, Pity, Peace.

Because the virtues live in human form, every person, from every land and climate ('clime'), who prays in his distress, is in fact praying to 'the human form divine' - that is, to Love, Mercy, Pity and Peace as they appear in humanity. The prayer of all people everywhere is ultimately directed to the divine that dwells within the human shape.

And all must love the human form,
In heathen, Turk, or Jew;
Where Mercy, Love, and Pity dwell
There God is dwelling too.

The poem ends with a powerful message of universal brotherhood and tolerance. Everyone must love the human form wherever it is found - whether in a 'heathen' (non-Christian), a 'Turk' (Muslim) or a 'Jew'. Religion, race and nation make no difference. Wherever the virtues of Mercy, Love and Pity live, God himself lives there too. To love any human being, of any faith, is to love God.

THE HUMAN ABSTRACT
Pity would be no more,
If we did not make somebody Poor;
And Mercy no more could be,
If all were as happy as we.

This companion poem from 'Songs of Experience' turns the earlier idealism upside down. Blake argues bitterly that Pity could not exist unless we first made someone Poor; and Mercy would have no use if everyone were as happy as we are. So the 'virtues' praised in 'The Divine Image' actually depend on the misery of others - they grow out of inequality and suffering that we ourselves create.

And mutual fear brings peace,
Till the selfish loves increase:
Then Cruelty knits a snare,
And spreads his baits with care.

What people call 'peace' is really born of mutual fear - we keep quiet only because we are afraid of one another. As selfish desires grow, Cruelty (personified) actively weaves a trap and carefully spreads its bait to catch its victims. Thus the social harmony of the first poem is exposed as a disguise for fear and self-interest.

He sits down with holy fears,
And waters the ground with tears:
Then Humility takes its root
Underneath his foot.

Cruelty pretends to be pious: he sits with 'holy fears' and waters the ground with hypocritical tears. From this watered ground grows the plant of false 'Humility', taking root right under his foot. Blake shows how cruelty disguises itself as humble religious devotion - the so-called virtue is rooted in deceit.

Soon spreads the dismal shade
Of Mystery over his head;
And the Caterpillar and Fly
Feed on the Mystery.
And it bears the fruit of Deceit,
Ruddy and sweet to eat;
And the Raven his nest has made
In its thickest shade.

From the tree of false humility soon grows the gloomy shade of 'Mystery' - the deliberate mystification used by priests and rulers to keep people obedient. On this Mystery feed the Caterpillar and the Fly (priests and parasites who live off it). The tree bears the 'fruit of Deceit', which looks red ('ruddy') and sweet but is poisonous, and in its thickest, darkest shade the Raven (a bird of death and ill omen) has built its nest. The whole growth is a tree of corruption.

The Gods of the earth and sea,
Sought thro' Nature to find this Tree;
But their search was all in vain:
There grows one in the Human Brain.

Finally Blake reveals where this terrible tree of cruelty, mystery and deceit really grows. The gods of earth and sea searched all of Nature to find such a tree, but their search was useless - because this tree does not grow anywhere in the outer world. It grows only in the 'Human Brain'. The whole machinery of oppression and false virtue is man-made; it is an invention of the human mind itself.

📝 Summary

The chapter pairs two of Blake's most famous companion poems. 'The Divine Image', from 'Songs of Innocence', celebrates four divine virtues - Mercy, Pity, Peace and Love. People pray to them in distress and thank them in joy. Blake identifies these virtues with both God and Man, saying Mercy has a human heart, Pity a human face, Love the human form divine and Peace the human dress. Since the virtues live in the human form, every person of every land who prays is really praying to the divine in man; and so we must love all human beings - 'heathen, Turk, or Jew' - for wherever Mercy, Love and Pity dwell, God dwells too. The poem thus preaches the unity of God and humanity and universal tolerance. 'The Human Abstract', its 'Songs of Experience' counterpart, exposes the dark, ironic underside of the same virtues. Pity, says Blake, can exist only because we make some people poor, and Mercy only because some are unhappy; the so-called 'peace' is really mutual fear. From selfishness grows Cruelty, which lays its snares, weeps hypocritical 'holy' tears and plants false Humility. Out of this rises the gloomy tree of Mystery, fed on by parasites, bearing the sweet-looking 'fruit of Deceit' and sheltering the Raven of death. The poem ends by declaring that this tree of oppression and deceit is not found anywhere in Nature - it grows only in the Human Brain. Read together, the two poems show Blake's two 'contrary states': the innocent vision in which virtue is divine and human, and the experienced vision in which the very same virtues are revealed as the products of human cruelty and exploitation.

💡 Central Idea

Through two contrary poems Blake explores the same four virtues - Mercy, Pity, Peace and Love. 'The Divine Image' presents the innocent, idealistic vision that these virtues are divine and live within every human form, so that to love any human being is to love God. 'The Human Abstract' presents the experienced, critical vision that these very 'virtues' arise only from human inequality, fear, hypocrisy and cruelty, and that the whole tree of oppression and deceit is rooted not in Nature but in the Human Brain. Together they reveal the gap between religious ideals and social reality.

🎯 Themes

  • Unity of the Divine and the Human: In 'The Divine Image' Blake completely identifies God with Mercy, Pity, Peace and Love, and locates these same virtues in the human heart, face, form and dress. God is not a distant ruler but lives within humanity itself; the human form is therefore 'divine'.

  • Universal Brotherhood and Religious Tolerance: Because the divine lives in every human being, all people - 'heathen, Turk, or Jew' - deserve love, regardless of religion, race or nation. Blake rejects sectarian hatred and preaches the brotherhood of all mankind.

  • Hypocrisy of Conventional 'Virtue' and Social Criticism: 'The Human Abstract' is a sharp critique showing that Pity and Mercy depend on keeping others poor and unhappy, that 'peace' is really mutual fear, and that Cruelty disguises itself as holy humility. Blake attacks the way organised religion and an unjust society justify exploitation.

  • Innocence versus Experience - the Two Contrary States: The paired poems embody Blake's central idea that the human soul has two opposite visions. The same virtues that appear pure and divine to innocence are revealed by experience to be tangled with cruelty, mystery and deceit. The tree of evil grows finally 'in the Human Brain' - evil is man-made.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

Blake's message is twofold and must be read across both poems. In 'The Divine Image' he teaches that true religion lies in love and compassion for every human being, since God himself dwells in human form irrespective of creed. In 'The Human Abstract' he warns that virtues become hollow and even harmful when a society uses them to mask inequality, fear and exploitation. The combined message is that we should cultivate genuine, active love and justice for all, and reject the hypocrisy that praises 'pity' and 'mercy' while deliberately keeping fellow human beings poor and oppressed. Evil and cruelty are not forces of Nature but creations of the human mind, and therefore can be unmade by human conscience.

Justification of the Title

The title 'The Divine Image' is justified because the poem argues that the image of God ('image' here meaning likeness or form) is the human form itself - Mercy, Pity, Peace and Love are at once God and Man, so the human being is literally the divine image on earth. The title 'The Human Abstract' is equally apt and deliberately ironic: an 'abstract' is something drawn out or generalised away from concrete reality, and the poem shows how the human mind 'abstracts' virtues like Pity and Mercy away from the real suffering that produces them, turning lived cruelty into comforting ideas. The tree of these abstractions grows 'in the Human Brain', so the title points to the human mind as the source of both false virtue and real oppression.

🪄 Literary Devices

Personification — “'For Mercy has a human heart, / Pity a human face'; 'Then Cruelty knits a snare'; 'Humility takes its root'”

Abstract qualities such as Mercy, Pity, Cruelty and Humility are given human bodies and human actions - Mercy has a heart, Cruelty weaves a snare and waters the ground with tears. This personification makes the moral ideas vivid and dramatic.

Symbolism — “The 'Tree' of Mystery and Deceit; 'Caterpillar and Fly'; 'the Raven'; 'fruit of Deceit'”

Blake uses an extended symbolic tree to stand for institutional corruption: Mystery is priestly mystification, the Caterpillar and Fly are parasitic priests, the Raven symbolises death and ill omen, and the sweet 'fruit of Deceit' is the attractive lie that poisons. The whole tree symbolises man-made evil.

Repetition / Refrain — “'Mercy, Pity, Peace, and Love' is repeated through the opening stanzas of 'The Divine Image'”

The four virtues are repeated again and again, almost like a chant or hymn. This repetition gives the poem a song-like, prayerful quality (suiting 'Songs of Innocence') and hammers home the identity of the virtues with both God and Man.

Irony — “'Pity would be no more, / If we did not make somebody Poor'; 'mutual fear brings peace'”

'The Human Abstract' is built on bitter irony: the very virtues celebrated in the first poem are shown to depend on poverty, unhappiness and fear. What looks like goodness is secretly rooted in injustice - an ironic reversal of the innocent ideal.

Imagery — “'waters the ground with tears'; 'the dismal shade / Of Mystery'; 'Ruddy and sweet to eat'; 'thickest shade'”

Blake creates strong visual and sensory pictures - hypocritical tears watering the earth, a gloomy spreading shade, a red sweet poisonous fruit, the dark nesting place of the raven. This vivid imagery makes the abstract critique concrete and frightening.

Apostrophe / Allusion — “'In heathen, Turk, or Jew'; 'The Gods of the earth and sea'”

Blake alludes to different religions ('heathen, Turk, or Jew') to assert tolerance, and to classical 'Gods of the earth and sea' (pagan nature deities) in 'The Human Abstract'. The allusions widen the poems' reference and reinforce their universal claims.

Q. What message of tolerance does the last stanza of 'The Divine Image' give?

It says that all must love the human form, whether in 'heathen, Turk, or Jew', for wherever Mercy, Love and Pity dwell, God dwells too. Blake thus preaches universal brotherhood and respect for every religion.

Q. According to 'The Human Abstract', on what do Pity and Mercy depend?

Blake says Pity could not exist unless 'we did not make somebody Poor', and Mercy could not be 'if all were as happy as we'. So these virtues depend on the existence of poverty and unhappiness deliberately created by society.

Q. Where, according to the last stanza of 'The Human Abstract', does the tree of cruelty really grow?

The gods searched all of Nature in vain for this tree; it grows nowhere in the outer world but only 'in the Human Brain'. This shows that cruelty, mystery and deceit are creations of the human mind, not of Nature.

Long Answer Questions
Q. 'The Divine Image' and 'The Human Abstract' are companion poems presenting two contrary states of the human soul. Compare and contrast the two poems with reference to the virtues of Mercy, Pity, Peace and Love.

The two poems are deliberate opposites: 'The Divine Image' belongs to 'Songs of Innocence' and 'The Human Abstract' to 'Songs of Experience'. In the first poem the four virtues - Mercy, Pity, Peace and Love - are presented as wholly divine and wholly human. People pray to them in distress and thank them in joy; they are God ('our father dear') and equally Man ('his child and care'). Mercy has a human heart, Pity a human face, Love the human form divine and Peace the human dress, so that to love any human being - heathen, Turk or Jew - is to love God. The vision is innocent, hopeful and tolerant. 'The Human Abstract' shatters this idealism. Here Blake shows the dark social reality behind the same virtues: Pity exists only because we make others poor, Mercy only because some are unhappy, and 'peace' is merely mutual fear. From selfishness grows personified Cruelty, who lays snares, weeps hypocritical 'holy' tears and plants false Humility; from this rises the tree of Mystery, fed on by parasitic Caterpillar and Fly, bearing the sweet 'fruit of Deceit' and sheltering the Raven of death. Finally the tree is found to grow only 'in the Human Brain'. Thus the same virtues that innocence sees as divine, experience exposes as products of human cruelty, fear and exploitation. Read together, the poems reveal Blake's central belief: human ideals and human reality are tragically opposed, and the evil that corrupts virtue is man-made and therefore answerable to human conscience.

Q. How does 'The Human Abstract' work as a piece of social criticism? Discuss Blake's attack on hypocrisy, organised religion and exploitation.

'The Human Abstract' is one of Blake's sharpest pieces of social criticism. It begins by exposing the hidden economics of charity: 'Pity would be no more, / If we did not make somebody Poor' - virtues like Pity and Mercy are not pure but depend on, and even require, the poverty and misery that the powerful deliberately create. The 'peace' admired by society is unmasked as 'mutual fear', a fragile truce of frightened, selfish people rather than true harmony. Blake then personifies Cruelty, who 'knits a snare' and spreads baits, then disguises himself in religious piety - sitting 'with holy fears', watering the ground 'with tears' so that false Humility takes root. This is a direct attack on hypocrisy and on organised religion: priests use a 'dismal shade / Of Mystery' to keep the poor obedient and submissive, while parasitic figures (the Caterpillar and Fly) feed on this mystery. The tree bears the attractive but poisonous 'fruit of Deceit' and shelters the Raven of death. The climax delivers Blake's deepest charge: this whole tree of oppression is not part of Nature - 'There grows one in the Human Brain.' By placing the source of cruelty in the human mind, Blake insists that injustice, religious mystification and exploitation are not divinely ordained or natural but humanly invented, and therefore can and must be undone by human moral effort. The poem is thus both a diagnosis of social evil and a call to conscience.

Then every man, of every clime, / That prays in his distress, / Prays to the human form divine, / Love, Mercy, Pity, Peace. // And all must love the human form, / In heathen, Turk, or Jew; / Where Mercy, Love, and Pity dwell / There God is dwelling too.
Q. Whom does every man pray to, according to these lines?

Every man of every land, when he prays in his distress, is really praying to 'the human form divine' - that is, to Love, Mercy, Pity and Peace as they live within the human form.

Q. What idea of religious tolerance is expressed through 'heathen, Turk, or Jew'?

By including a non-Christian, a Muslim and a Jew, Blake declares that the human form must be loved in people of every religion. God dwells in all of them, so no faith is superior; this preaches universal brotherhood and tolerance.

Q. Explain the line 'Where Mercy, Love, and Pity dwell / There God is dwelling too.'

It means that God is not separate from these virtues; He is present wherever they are found in human beings. Therefore showing mercy, love and pity to others is itself an act of worship, and the presence of God is proved by the presence of compassion.

The Gods of the earth and sea, / Sought thro' Nature to find this Tree; / But their search was all in vain: / There grows one in the Human Brain.
Q. Which 'Tree' is referred to in these lines?

It refers to the symbolic tree of Cruelty, Mystery and Deceit described earlier in 'The Human Abstract' - the tree that grows from selfishness and hypocrisy and bears the poisonous 'fruit of Deceit'.

Q. Why was the gods' search 'all in vain'?

Their search was vain because this tree does not grow anywhere in the natural world. It is not a part of Nature at all, so however much they searched through Nature they could never find it.

Q. What is the significance of the tree growing 'in the Human Brain'?

It means that cruelty, mystery and deceit are creations of the human mind, not natural or divine forces. Evil and oppression are man-made; therefore the human mind that creates them is also responsible for them and capable of removing them.
