About the author: John Milton was a 17th-century English poet and intellectual, renowned for his epic poem 'Paradise Lost' and his profound influence on English literature.

✍️ About the Author / Poet

John Milton (1608-1674) was a great seventeenth-century English poet, scholar and pamphleteer, considered second only to Shakespeare among English poets. Born in London and educated at Christ's College, Cambridge, he was a man of immense learning, fluent in Latin, Greek, Hebrew and Italian. A devout Puritan and a passionate champion of liberty, he served as Secretary for Foreign Tongues under Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth and wrote powerful prose defending freedom of the press (Areopagitica) and republican government. From about 1652 he became completely blind, yet his greatest works were composed during this dark period through dictation to assistants. He is best known for his epic 'Paradise Lost', and for 'Paradise Regained' and 'Samson Agonistes'. The two sonnets in this selection -- 'On His Blindness' (Sonnet XIX) and 'On His Having Arrived at the Age of Twenty-Three' (Sonnet VII) -- are deeply personal Petrarchan sonnets that reveal his struggle to reconcile his own gifts and limitations with his faith in God's will.

📖 Stanza-wise Explanation

When I consider how my light is spent,
Ere half my days, in this dark world and wide,
And that one Talent which is death to hide,
Lodged with me useless, though my soul more bent
To serve therewith my Maker, and present
My true account, lest he returning chide;
"Doth God exact day-labour, light denied?"
I fondly ask. But Patience, to prevent

[On His Blindness -- octave] When I think about how my eyesight (light) has been used up before even half my life is over, in this dark and vast world, and reflect that the one talent (my poetic gift) -- which it is spiritually fatal to leave unused -- now lies idle within me, even though my soul is more eager than ever to use it in service of God and to render a true account of my life, lest God on his return should rebuke me, I foolishly ask: 'Does God demand a full day's labour from a man whose light (sight) has been taken away?' But Patience intervenes to stop this murmuring complaint before it is fully uttered.

That murmur, soon replies: "God doth not need
Either man's work or his own gifts; who best
Bear his mild yoke, they serve him best. His state
Is kingly. Thousands at his bidding speed
And post o'er land and ocean without rest:
They also serve who only stand and wait."

[On His Blindness -- sestet] Patience quickly answers that complaint, saying: 'God does not need either man's labour or the return of the gifts he himself has given. Those who bear his gentle burden most patiently and submissively serve him best. His majesty is like that of a king. Thousands of angels rush at his command, speeding tirelessly over land and sea to do his will; but equally, those who only stand and wait patiently, in quiet readiness and resignation to his will, also serve him.'

How soon hath Time, the subtle thief of youth,
Stol'n on his wing my three-and-twentieth year!
My hasting days fly on with full career,
But my late spring no bud or blossom shew'th.
Perhaps my semblance might deceive the truth,
That I to manhood am arrived so near,
And inward ripeness doth much less appear,
That some more timely-happy spirits endu'th.

[On His Having Arrived at the Age of Twenty-Three -- octave] The poet exclaims how quickly Time -- the cunning thief that steals away youth -- has flown by on its wing and carried off his twenty-third year. His hurrying days race on at full speed, yet his late spring (his youth) shows no bud or blossom -- that is, no real achievement to mark his age. Perhaps his youthful outward appearance hides the truth that he is so near to full manhood; and his inner maturity seems much less than what some other, more precociously gifted young men already possess.

Yet be it less or more, or soon or slow,
It shall be still in strictest measure even
To that same lot, however mean or high,
Toward which Time leads me, and the will of Heaven;
All is, if I have grace to use it so,
As ever in my great Task-Master's eye.

[On His Having Arrived at the Age of Twenty-Three -- sestet] Yet whether his maturity be less or more, whether it comes soon or slowly, it will always be exactly proportioned, in strictest measure, to that destiny -- however humble or high -- toward which Time and the will of Heaven are leading him. All that matters is this: if he has the divine grace to use his life rightly, everything will be well, for he lives and works always as if in the sight of his great Task-Master, God.

📝 Summary

This selection contains two of Milton's most celebrated Petrarchan sonnets, both deeply autobiographical and rooted in his Puritan faith. 'On His Blindness' (Sonnet XIX) records his anguish at losing his eyesight in middle age. In the octave he laments that his 'light' is spent before half his days, and that his one God-given talent now lies useless, even though his soul longs to serve God; he almost complains by asking whether God can demand 'day-labour' from a blind man. In the sestet, Patience answers him: God needs neither man's work nor his gifts; those who patiently bear his mild yoke serve him best, and 'They also serve who only stand and wait.' The poem thus moves from frustration to calm acceptance of God's will. 'On His Having Arrived at the Age of Twenty-Three' (Sonnet VII) is a youthful meditation on the swift passage of time. Milton is dismayed that his twenty-third year has flown by without any visible achievement -- his 'late spring' shows 'no bud or blossom.' Yet he resolves the anxiety by submitting to Providence: whatever his destiny, however high or low, soon or slow, it will be exactly measured by Time and the will of Heaven, and all will be well if he uses his life rightly under the eye of his great Task-Master, God. Together the sonnets express patience, humility, faith and the conviction that service to God lies in willing submission, not merely in outward action.

💡 Central Idea

The central idea of both sonnets is patient submission to the will of God. Milton, confronting personal limitation -- blindness in one poem, and a sense of wasted youth in the other -- learns that true service to God does not depend on outward achievement or ceaseless action, but on faith, humility and willing acceptance of one's God-given lot. The famous line 'They also serve who only stand and wait' captures the conviction that quiet patience and resignation to Providence are themselves a form of divine service.

🎯 Themes

  • Faith and submission to God's will: Both sonnets affirm that human beings should patiently accept whatever destiny God ordains. Milton's complaints -- about blindness and about lost youth -- are each answered by surrender to Providence and trust in the divine plan.

  • True nature of service: The poems redefine service to God. It is not measured by tireless labour or visible accomplishment but by patience, obedience and a willing heart. 'They also serve who only stand and wait' shows that passive endurance and readiness are as valuable as active toil.

  • The passage of time and human limitation: Especially in Sonnet VII, Time is the 'subtle thief of youth' whose swift flight robs the poet of his years and provokes anxiety over unfulfilled potential. The poet must reconcile his human limitations -- physical and temporal -- with his lofty aspirations.

  • Patience and inner resilience: Personified Patience speaks the wisdom that quietens the poet's distress. Both sonnets celebrate the strength of the human spirit that, through faith and self-discipline, transforms frustration and despair into calm acceptance and hope.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

The poems teach that human worth and service to God do not depend on outward success, ceaseless activity, or freedom from limitation. When confronted by misfortune -- blindness, the loss of time, or unfulfilled ambition -- one should respond not with bitterness but with patience, humility and faith. To bear one's burdens calmly and to remain ready to do God's will is itself a noble form of service. True greatness lies in submitting one's life, with grace, to a higher purpose.

Justification of the Title

The collective title 'Poems by Milton' is appropriate because the selection brings together representative short poems -- two Petrarchan sonnets -- that exhibit Milton's characteristic voice: his deep religious faith, his learned classical allusions, his grand and dignified diction, and his autobiographical reflection on personal trials. Each individual title is precisely descriptive: 'On His Blindness' announces the poem's subject -- the poet's loss of sight and his spiritual response to it -- while 'On His Having Arrived at the Age of Twenty-Three' names the exact occasion that prompts the poet's meditation on time, youth and destiny. Both titles place Milton's private experience at the centre, justifying their grouping as personal 'Poems by Milton.'

Personification — “"But Patience, to prevent / That murmur, soon replies" / "Time, the subtle thief of youth"”

Patience is personified as a wise speaker who answers the poet's complaint. Time is personified as a cunning thief that secretly steals away the poet's youth.

Allusion — “"that one Talent which is death to hide" / "my great Task-Master's eye"”

Biblical allusions abound: the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25) and the idea of God as the great 'Task-Master' before whom all life is lived. These echo Milton's deep Puritan, scriptural learning.

Short Answer Questions
Q. What does Milton mean by 'how my light is spent'?
मिल्टन का 'how my light is spent' से क्या तात्पर्य है?

By 'light' Milton means his eyesight, which he has lost through blindness. The phrase means his power of sight has been used up and gone, before even half his life is over. On a deeper level, 'light' also suggests his life and inner spiritual vision.

Q. What is the 'one Talent' Milton refers to, and why is it 'death to hide'?

The 'one Talent' is Milton's God-given poetic genius, an allusion to the Biblical Parable of the Talents. It is 'death to hide' because to leave a divine gift unused is, in the parable, a spiritual sin that brings condemnation; Milton fears that his blindness now leaves this talent idle within him.

Q. How does Patience answer the poet's complaint in 'On His Blindness'?

Patience replies that God needs neither man's work nor his own gifts back. Those who patiently bear God's mild yoke serve him best. God is like a king with thousands of angels rushing to obey him, yet equally 'They also serve who only stand and wait' -- meaning patient, willing submission is itself true service.

Q. Why does Milton call Time 'the subtle thief of youth' in Sonnet VII?

Milton calls Time a 'subtle thief of youth' because it steals away the years quietly and imperceptibly, like a cunning thief. He is dismayed that his twenty-third year has flown by 'on his wing,' carrying off his youth without his even realising how quickly it has gone.

Long Answer Questions
Q. How does 'On His Blindness' move from despair to acceptance? Discuss the spiritual journey of the poet.

The sonnet traces a clear inner movement from frustration to serene faith. In the octave, the blind Milton is full of distress: his 'light is spent' before half his days, and his one God-given talent lies 'useless' even though his soul longs to serve God. Anxious that God may 'chide' him for an unused gift, he almost rebels, asking bitterly, 'Doth God exact day-labour, light denied?' -- questioning whether it is fair for God to demand work from a blind man. This is the low point of despair and near-complaint. At the volta (line 9), personified Patience intervenes before the murmur is fully voiced and offers wisdom that transforms the poet's outlook. Patience explains that God is self-sufficient: he needs neither 'man's work' nor the return of his own gifts. What pleases God is the spirit of obedience -- those who 'bear his mild yoke' patiently serve him best. God's majesty is kingly: thousands of angels speed tirelessly over land and ocean at his command, yet service is not confined to such restless activity. The closing line, 'They also serve who only stand and wait,' resolves the conflict completely: patient waiting, readiness and submission to God's will are themselves noble service. Thus Milton moves from self-pity and doubt to humble, hopeful acceptance, reconciling his blindness with his deep faith and finding peace in surrender to divine purpose.

Q. Both of Milton's sonnets respond to a personal crisis with faith in God. Compare how the poet resolves his anxiety in 'On His Blindness' and 'On His Having Arrived at the Age of Twenty-Three'.

Both sonnets follow a similar emotional and structural pattern: a personal crisis stated in the octave, resolved through religious faith in the sestet. In 'On His Blindness,' the crisis is the loss of sight in middle age, which threatens to render Milton's poetic talent 'useless' and make him fall short before God. His anxiety is sharpest when he asks whether God can fairly demand 'day-labour' from a blind man. The resolution comes through personified Patience, who teaches that God needs no man's labour; willing submission and patient waiting are themselves true service -- 'They also serve who only stand and wait.' In 'On His Having Arrived at the Age of Twenty-Three,' the crisis is different but related: not physical loss but a sense of wasted time and unfulfilled promise. At twenty-three Milton fears his 'late spring' shows 'no bud or blossom,' that his inner ripeness lags behind that of more precocious peers. Here the resolution is not voiced by a personified figure but by the poet's own reasoning: whatever his destiny -- 'less or more, or soon or slow,' 'mean or high' -- it will be exactly measured by Time and 'the will of Heaven,' and all will be well if he has 'grace' to use his life rightly in his 'great Task-Master's eye.' In both poems, therefore, Milton overcomes anxiety by surrendering his individual will to divine providence, trusting that God's plan and timing are perfect. The difference lies in tone and means: 'On His Blindness' dramatizes the resolution through dialogue with Patience and ends in calm, almost comforting acceptance, while Sonnet VII resolves through quiet, self-assured reasoning and ends in disciplined, hopeful resolve. Together they reveal Milton's lifelong conviction that human limitation is best answered by faith, patience and humble dedication to God.

Reference to Context (Extract-based)
When I consider how my light is spent, Ere half my days, in this dark world and wide, And that one Talent which is death to hide, Lodged with me useless, though my soul more bent To serve therewith my Maker...
Q. What does the poet mean by 'my light is spent', and what is the occasion of these lines?

'My light is spent' means that the poet has lost his eyesight; his power of sight has been used up. The occasion is Milton's own blindness, which struck him in middle age ('ere half my days'), prompting this meditation on how he can still serve God.

Q. What is the 'one Talent', and why is it 'death to hide'?

The 'one Talent' is Milton's God-given poetic gift, alluding to the Biblical Parable of the Talents. It is 'death to hide' because leaving a divine gift unused is a spiritual sin that invites God's condemnation, as in the parable the servant who buried his talent was punished.

Q. What does this attitude reveal about the poet's state of mind?

It reveals a troubled, anxious mind. Despite his blindness, his soul is eager to serve God, yet he fears being judged for an unused gift. He is caught between deep devotion and frustration, on the verge of complaining about his fate -- a state from which Patience will soon rescue him.

How soon hath Time, the subtle thief of youth, Stol'n on his wing my three-and-twentieth year! My hasting days fly on with full career, But my late spring no bud or blossom shew'th.
Q. Why is Time called 'the subtle thief of youth'?

Time is called 'the subtle thief of youth' because it quietly and imperceptibly steals away one's youthful years, just as a cunning thief acts unnoticed. The poet realises with alarm that his twenty-third year has slipped away almost without his awareness.

Q. What does 'my late spring no bud or blossom shew'th' mean?

'Spring' here is a metaphor for the poet's youth. The line means that although he has reached early manhood, his life so far shows no 'bud or blossom' -- no notable achievement or sign of mature accomplishment to match his years. He feels he has nothing to show for his time.

Q. Identify and explain one literary device used in these lines.

Personification is used in 'Time, the subtle thief of youth': Time is given the human quality of a cunning thief who 'steals' the poet's years. (Metaphor is also present in 'my late spring,' where spring stands for youth.) The device vividly conveys the swift, deceptive passage of time.

'Time, the subtle thief of youth' में मानवीकरण का प्रयोग है: समय को एक चतुर चोर का मानवीय गुण दिया गया है जो कवि के वर्ष 'चुरा' लेता है।
