His final choice, the 'dull grey of the cloud that hides the sun', is the most telling: grey conveys gloom and faded vitality, while the cloud blocking the sun symbolises how time obscures joy, light and clarity. When he questions time's motion, the river and the still pool offer no comfort either, for both can suggest loss — the river carrying everything away, the pool standing stagnant and lifeless.
