B.Arch in India — eligibility, exams, fees, careers

A five-year professional degree that trains you to design buildings and spaces, from a house to a campus or a city block. It mixes art (drawing, form, space) with engineering (structures, materials, services) and law (building codes). It is the only route to calling yourself an 'Architect' in India, because the title is protected by law and requires registration with the Council of Architecture.

Know this. Only a person registered with the Council of Architecture may legally use the title 'Architect', and registration requires a recognised qualification from a college the Council approves. Before paying fees, check that the college and the specific B.Arch programme appear on the Council's list of approved institutions for your year of admission. Also know that NATA or JEE Paper 2A is compulsory; a PCM Class 12 score alone does not get you in.

Who can apply

The Council of Architecture (Minimum Standards of Architectural Education) Regulations, 2020 require Class 12 or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, plus one of Chemistry, Biology, a technical vocational subject, Computer Science, IT, Informatics Practices, Engineering Graphics or Business Studies, with at least 45% aggregate marks. A 10+3 diploma with Mathematics and at least 45% also qualifies. You must also qualify an aptitude test in architecture: NATA (by the Council) or JEE Main Paper 2A (by NTA). For NITs and other JoSAA institutes the 75% (65% for SC, ST, PwD) or top-20-percentile Class 12 rule also applies.

How admission works

There are three main doors. First, JEE Main Paper 2A (Mathematics, Aptitude and a Drawing test, held in January and April) gives a rank used by NITs, SPA Delhi, Bhopal and Vijayawada and other centrally funded institutes through JoSAA counselling. Second, NATA, conducted by the Council of Architecture on several Fridays and Saturdays between April and June, gives a score accepted by most state government and private architecture colleges; states run their own counselling that merges the NATA score with Class 12 marks. You may take up to two NATA attempts in Phase 1 and your best score counts; a Phase 2 attempt is only for leftover seats. Third, three IITs (Kharagpur, Roorkee and IIT BHU) offer B.Arch; for these you must qualify JEE Advanced, then pass the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT), and then get the seat through JoSAA. Most students take both NATA and JEE Paper 2A to keep options open.

Specialisations: No branches at B.Arch level; specialise later through M.Arch or M.Plan in urban design, landscape, conservation, sustainable architecture, interior architecture or construction management

Is it you?

A good fit if

You sketch, rearrange rooms in your head, and notice how buildings feel and work
You enjoy long projects more than exams and can take criticism of your work in front of others
You are comfortable with maths and physics but do not want pure engineering
You are patient: architecture rewards people in their 30s and 40s more than in their 20s

Think twice if

You want a quick, well-paid first job; architecture starts slow
You dislike all-nighters and deadline-heavy studio culture
You are choosing it only because you like interior decoration; that is a different course (B.Des or interior design)
You cannot afford five years of fees plus heavy spending on materials, models, software and site visits

The honest part

Five years is a long time; your friends in B.Tech or B.Com will be earning a year before you
Studio culture means frequent late nights and heavy personal spending on sheets, models and prints
Early salaries are modest and depend a lot on city and firm; metros pay more but cost more
Growth depends on your portfolio, software skills (Revit, Rhino, SketchUp) and the reputation of the offices you trained in
Construction slowdowns hit architecture hiring directly

What it costs

Government: About ₹30,000–2.5 lakh a year in tuition at state government colleges, NITs, SPAs and IITs
Private: About ₹1.5–4 lakh a year in tuition at private colleges and universities, more at premium schools
Help: Budget ₹20,000–60,000 a year extra for drawing materials, model-making, printing, a capable laptop and software. IIT and NIT income-based fee remission applies to B.Arch seats there. State post-matric scholarships apply at government and aided colleges.

Starting pay

Low for the effort. Most fresh graduates in small and mid-size firms start at roughly ₹2.5–5 lakh a year; large developers and international firms in metros pay about ₹5–8 lakh. Pay rises with experience, a portfolio and your own practice, where income ranges very widely. Many architects say the first five years are a training period, not an earning period.

Questions families ask

Can I do B.Arch with PCB?

No. The Council of Architecture requires Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects in Class 12. A PCB student without Mathematics is not eligible. Students with Physics, Mathematics and a subject like Computer Science or Business Studies instead of Chemistry are eligible.

Is NATA or JEE Paper 2A better?

Neither is better; they open different doors. JEE Paper 2A is needed for NITs, SPAs and other JoSAA institutes. NATA is accepted by most state and private colleges. Most serious applicants take both. The drawing and aptitude practice overlaps a lot.

How many times can I take NATA?

For 2026 the Council allowed up to two attempts in Phase 1, with the best score counting for regular counselling, or one attempt in Phase 2 for vacant seats. A candidate who took Phase 1 cannot take Phase 2. The rules change from year to year, so read that year's NATA brochure.

Is B.Arch the same as interior design?

No. Interior design is a separate B.Des or B.Sc course and does not make you an architect. An architect can do interiors, but an interior designer cannot legally call themselves an architect or sign building plans that need an architect.

Can I go abroad after B.Arch?

Yes. Indian B.Arch graduates regularly do master's programmes in the UK, Europe, the US and Australia. Working as a licensed architect abroad usually needs that country's own registration process, which can take several years.
