B.Com is the standard undergraduate degree in accounting, business law, economics and finance, offered by almost every university in India. It is flexible and affordable, and it pairs well with professional courses like CA, CS and CMA. On its own it is a foundation degree: the job you get depends much more on the skills, internships and extra qualifications you add than on the degree itself.
Know this. The degree name is the same everywhere, but the outcome is not. A B.Com from a college that places students, plus internships, Excel and accounting-software skills, or a professional course alongside, is a real career start. A B.Com with nothing added puts you in the largest pool of graduates in India, competing for the same entry-level jobs. Decide in the first year what you will add to it.
Getting in
Bachelor of Commerce (including B.Com Honours)
Who can apply
Class 12 pass, usually with commerce. Many universities also accept science students, and some accept arts students, sometimes requiring maths or accountancy for B.Com (Hons). Minimum marks are set by each university and college, not by a national rule; top colleges admit on entrance scores, not board marks.
How admission works
Central universities, including Delhi University, admit through CUET-UG scores: you choose the right domain subjects (accountancy, business studies, economics, maths) in CUET, then apply through the university's own portal, and seats are allotted by rank and college preference. Many state and private universities also accept CUET, while others use Class 12 marks or their own tests. State universities and their affiliated colleges often admit on Class 12 marks through the university's merit lists or a state portal. Autonomous colleges such as St. Xavier's (Mumbai and Kolkata) and Christ University run their own admission processes. Open universities (such as IGNOU) admit directly and suit students doing CA or CS in parallel.

Is it you?
A good fit if
- You liked accountancy and business studies in Class 11–12
- You want a low-cost degree that leaves time for CA, CS, CMA or CFA
- You plan an MBA or M.Com later and want a solid business base first
- You are aiming for bank, SSC or other government exams that need any degree
- You want to join a family business with a proper grounding in accounts and tax
Think twice if
- You expect a B.Com alone to lead to a well-paid job without extra skills
- You dislike accounts and would rather study management or economics as ideas
- You want a hands-on, project-based course — many B.Com programmes are exam-heavy
- You want to avoid a crowded job market for entry-level accounts roles
The honest part
- Campus placements exist mainly at well-known colleges; most B.Com graduates find jobs off-campus or through exams.
- Many students treat B.Com as a side degree while doing CA or CS; attendance-heavy colleges make that harder.
- Entry-level pay is modest and rises mainly with a professional qualification, an MBA, or specialised skills.
- The four-year NEP honours option adds a year; check whether your target master's or job actually values it.
- Top colleges have very high CUET cut-offs; plan a realistic list of colleges.
What it costs
- Government
- ₹5,000–50,000 a year at government and aided colleges and central universities
- Private
- ₹50,000–3 lakh a year at private colleges and universities; well-known autonomous and private universities are at the upper end
- Help
- State post-matric scholarships, central sector scholarships and college fee waivers apply to eligible students. Open-university B.Com costs very little in total.
Rough 2026 ranges to compare routes. Fees differ by college and state and change every year.

Questions families ask
B.Com or B.Com (Hons) — does it matter?
Honours usually means deeper coverage of fewer subjects and sometimes a maths requirement. Employers rarely distinguish sharply, but for M.Com, research or some universities' master's admissions, honours can help. The college matters more than the label.
Can a science student take B.Com?
Usually yes. Many universities accept science students, and some B.Com (Hons) programmes want maths in Class 12. You will need to catch up on accountancy in the first semester.
Should I do B.Com with CA?
Most CA students do, because it guarantees a degree. A regular college with strict attendance can clash with CA exams, so many choose an open university or a college known to be flexible.
Is B.Com enough for a good job?
By itself, usually only for entry-level roles. It becomes much stronger with a professional course, an MBA, a finance certification, or practical skills like advanced Excel, accounting software and data analysis.
What is the difference between B.Com and BBA?
B.Com is centred on accounting, tax, law and economics. BBA is centred on management — marketing, HR, operations, strategy. B.Com fits CA/CS/CMA and finance; BBA fits an MBA and general business roles.
