M.Com is a postgraduate degree that goes deeper into accounting, finance, taxation, business economics and research methods. It is the standard qualification for teaching commerce in colleges (along with UGC-NET) and a solid base for research, but it is not a management degree and has limited campus placement at most universities. It suits students heading to teaching, research, government exams, or combining it with a professional course.

Know this. Many families treat M.Com as the automatic next step after B.Com. It is best when there is a clear reason: teaching and research, a government-exam plan, or pairing with a professional course. If the goal is a corporate management job, a good MBA or a professional qualification does far more; if the goal is a quick job, two years of work experience often counts for more than the M.Com.

Getting in

Master of Commerce

Who can apply

A bachelor's degree, usually B.Com or BBA/BMS; some universities also admit graduates in economics or other subjects with commerce papers. Minimum marks are set by each university, commonly around 45–55% in the bachelor's degree.

How admission works

Central universities, including Delhi University, admit to M.Com through CUET-PG scores and their own portals. Many state universities run their own entrance tests or admit on bachelor's marks through merit lists; affiliated colleges follow the university's process. Private universities usually admit on marks with an interview. Distance and open universities (such as IGNOU) admit directly, and are commonly used by students doing CA, CS or CMA in parallel.

Duration
2 years; 1 year at some universities for students who completed a four-year honours bachelor's under NEP 2020

Is it you?

A good fit if

  • You want to teach commerce in colleges and plan to clear UGC-NET
  • You enjoy research and may go on to a PhD
  • You are preparing for government exams and want a postgraduate degree alongside
  • You are doing CA, CS or CMA and want a master's for eligibility or academic roles
  • You want to deepen accounting and finance knowledge at low cost
  • You want a postgraduate degree while keeping costs low and time flexible

Think twice if

  • You want a management job with campus placement — an MBA from a good institute fits better
  • You expect a large salary jump over B.Com from the degree alone
  • You dislike writing a dissertation and reading academic papers
  • You would do it only to delay deciding what to do next

The honest part

  • Most universities have little or no campus placement for M.Com.
  • College teaching needs UGC-NET or a PhD, and permanent posts are few and competitive.
  • The degree adds modest value in corporate hiring over B.Com.
  • It is cheap and flexible, which makes it a good companion to CA, CS or CMA.
  • Under NEP, some universities offer a one-year M.Com after a four-year honours bachelor's; check the rules where you apply.

What it costs

Government
₹5,000–50,000 a year at central and state universities and their colleges
Private
₹50,000–2 lakh a year at private universities

UGC and state scholarships for postgraduate students apply where eligible. Open-university M.Com costs very little in total.

  • Assistant professor of commerce (after UGC-NET or PhD) at colleges and universities
  • Commerce teacher at senior secondary schools (with a B.Ed where required)
  • Accounts or finance executive at companies
  • Bank officer after clearing bank recruitment exams
  • Research associate at research institutes and financial research firms
  • Government roles through SSC, state PSC and other exams

Starting pay

M.Com graduates entering corporate accounts or finance roles commonly start around ₹3–5 lakh a year, often similar to B.Com graduates with experience. College teaching posts pay according to UGC pay scales in government and aided colleges, while private colleges often pay much less. These are rough figures.

Questions families ask

M.Com or MBA — which should I choose?

Choose M.Com for teaching, research or a deeper academic base at low cost. Choose an MBA from a good institute for corporate management roles and placement. An MBA from a weak institute is often not better value than an M.Com plus skills.

Can I become a college lecturer after M.Com?

You need to clear UGC-NET (or a state eligibility test for state colleges) or hold a PhD, as per UGC rules for assistant professors. M.Com with a good score is the base for that.

Can I do M.Com along with CA?

Yes, many students do it through distance or open mode. It gives a postgraduate degree, which helps for teaching, some government posts, and certain higher-study options.

Is M.Com useful for bank exams?

Bank PO and clerk exams need only a graduate degree, so M.Com is not required. The commerce background helps with some sections of officer exams and later bank promotion exams.

Is a distance M.Com valued the same as a regular one?

For UGC-NET, most government exams and many teaching posts, a distance or open-university M.Com from a UGC-recognised university is accepted. For corporate hiring and some universities' PhD admissions, a regular M.Com from a well-known department carries more weight. Check the specific rule for the job or programme you are aiming at.

What should I do during M.Com to improve job chances?

Add practical skills that the degree does not force on you: accounting software, advanced Excel, GST and income-tax filing practice, basic data analysis, and an internship at a CA firm or company finance team. If you are aiming for teaching, start UGC-NET preparation in the first year and write your dissertation carefully, because it is the start of a research record.
