BPES / B.P.Ed (Physical Education after 12)

Physical education degrees after Class 12 train you in the science and practice of sport and fitness — anatomy, physiology, sports training,…

  • 3 years
  • Any stream
  • via CUET-UG, State CETs (engineering, pharmacy, agriculture)

Physical education degrees after Class 12 train you in the science and practice of sport and fitness — anatomy, physiology, sports training, coaching methods, sports psychology, yoga and the rules and skills of many games — along with how to teach them. They lead to careers as school PE teachers, coaches, fitness trainers, sports officials and, with further study, sports scientists or administrators. They suit students who play at least one sport seriously, are physically fit, and enjoy teaching or organising others.

Know this. There are two different physical-education degrees and families often mix them up. The undergraduate degree after Class 12 (BPES, or a four-year B.P.Ed at places like LNIPE) is one; the older two-year B.P.Ed taken after graduation is the other, and it is the usual teaching qualification for school PE posts in many states. Before enrolling, check which qualification your state's PE teacher recruitment rules actually ask for.

Getting in

Bachelor of Physical Education and Sports (BPES) / undergraduate Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed)

Who can apply

Class 12 pass in any stream, usually with a minimum aggregate, plus a physical fitness test and often a sports-skill test. At LNIPE, the national institute under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the undergraduate B.P.Ed asks for at least 50% (45% for SC/ST, PwD and some other categories) and sets a maximum age of 21, with 3 years' relaxation for OBC-NCL and 5 years for SC/ST. Sports achievements add weight at most institutes.

How admission works

Most institutes combine a written test (or CUET-UG score, for central universities that use it) with a physical fitness test and a sports skill proficiency test, and sometimes an interview; certificates of sports participation earn extra marks. LNIPE Gwalior and its Guwahati centre run their own B.P.Ed entrance with fitness and skill tests, usually in May–June. State universities and physical-education colleges hold their own tests or admit on merit with fitness trials. Prepare for the fitness test (running, jumps, shuttle, strength) months in advance and carry original sports certificates. Check that the college is recognised by NCTE if you plan to use the degree to teach in schools.

Duration
3 years (BPES) or 4 years / 8 semesters (undergraduate B.P.Ed, for example at LNIPE)

What you study

  • Foundations and history of physical education and sport
  • Anatomy, physiology and exercise physiology
  • Kinesiology and biomechanics of movement
  • Sports training methods, fitness testing and conditioning
  • Sports psychology, sociology and health education
  • Yoga education
  • Teaching methods for physical education and lesson planning; school teaching practice
  • Rules, officiating and coaching in several games and athletics — daily practicals on the field

Specialisations: Athletics · Team games (cricket, football, hockey, basketball, volleyball, kabaddi, kho-kho) · Combat sports (wrestling, boxing, judo) · Yoga · Fitness and conditioning · Sports coaching

Is it you?

A good fit if

  • You have played a sport at school, district or state level and want a career around it
  • You are physically fit and enjoy daily outdoor training
  • You like teaching children and organising games and events
  • You are interested in fitness, coaching or sports science as a career
  • You are willing to do a master's (M.P.Ed or sports science) for better roles

Think twice if

  • You are not physically active — the course is demanding on the body every day
  • You expect a professional-athlete career from the degree alone; elite sport runs through academies and federations, not colleges
  • You want a desk job
  • You are older than the age limits at national institutes and have not checked state options

The honest part

  • Government PE teacher vacancies are few compared with graduates, and many private schools pay poorly
  • Injuries during training can interrupt the course
  • Age limits at national institutes are strict (21 at LNIPE for the general category)
  • Coaching careers depend heavily on federation certifications and results, not just the degree
  • The fitness industry pays better in cities but is competitive and often freelance

What it costs

Government
Government colleges and national institutes: roughly ₹15,000–1 lakh a year including hostel and mess at residential institutes.
Private
Private physical-education colleges: roughly ₹40,000–1.5 lakh a year.
Help
Sports kit, shoes and nutrition are real extra costs. Sports quota admissions and state sports scholarships (and Khelo India support for selected athletes) can help.

Rough 2026 ranges to compare routes. Fees differ by college and state and change every year.

Or start work as

  • Physical education teacher in private and government schools (government posts through recruitment exams)
  • Coach in schools, academies and clubs
  • Fitness trainer / personal trainer in gyms and corporate wellness programmes
  • Sports officer or instructor in colleges, universities, the armed forces and police training
  • Yoga instructor
  • Sports event coordinator and referee / umpire (after certification by federations)

Starting pay

School PE teachers and coaches in the private sector usually start around ₹12,000–30,000 a month; personal trainers' income depends on clients and city and can be higher after a few years. Government PE teacher and sports officer posts pay on government scales once allowances are added but are recruited through exams.

Questions families ask

What is the difference between BPES and B.P.Ed?

BPES is a three-year undergraduate degree after Class 12. B.P.Ed has traditionally been a two-year professional degree after graduation, but some institutes — LNIPE, for example — now run an undergraduate B.P.Ed of eight semesters after Class 12. Check which one your target institute offers and which one school recruitment in your state accepts.

Is there an age limit?

At LNIPE the maximum age for the undergraduate B.P.Ed is 21, relaxed by 3 years for OBC-NCL and 5 years for SC/ST candidates. State colleges set their own limits.

Do I need to be a state-level player?

No, but sports achievements earn extra marks in admission at most institutes, and the fitness and skill tests are real filters.

Can I become a sports scientist?

Yes, by adding a master's in sports science, exercise physiology or sports psychology. The physical-education degree is a good foundation for these.

What does the fitness test include?

Usually running (sprint and endurance), jumps, shuttle runs and strength items, plus a skill test in your chosen sport. The exact battery changes by institute and year; read the notice.
