Four-year professional degrees in the science of producing food and fibre: crops, soils, pests, plant breeding, horticulture, fisheries, forestry, dairy and agribusiness. They are taught mainly at state agricultural universities and ICAR institutes, which ICAR describes as professional degrees. They lead to government agriculture officer posts, jobs in seeds, fertilisers, agri-input, food processing and agri-finance, and to research. They suit students who want applied science with real-world impact and are comfortable with field work.
Know this. The old ICAR AIEEA-UG no longer exists: the national agriculture quota now runs through CUET-UG, and you must register separately on ICAR's counselling portal after CUET results. Many students miss this step. Also, only 20% of state agricultural university seats go through ICAR; most seats are in your own state's counselling, so do not skip your state's process.
Getting in
B.Sc (Hons) Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Fisheries Science (B.F.Sc), Agribusiness Management, Community Science, Food Nutrition and Dietetics, Sericulture, Natural Farming, and B.Tech Agricultural Engineering, Dairy Technology, Food Technology and Biotechnology at agricultural universities
Who can apply
For ICAR's national quota (CUET-ICAR UG 2026): Class 12 with at least three of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and Agriculture as core subjects, at least 50% aggregate (40% for SC, ST, third gender and PwBD), and minimum age 16 by 31 August of the admission year. Candidates who did a diploma or vocational course after Class 10 are not eligible for this route. The subjects you attempt in CUET must match those you passed in Class 12. Individual universities may add conditions such as an upper age limit or a compulsory subject for specific programmes (for example Mathematics for agricultural engineering).
How admission works
There are two main routes. First, the national route: ICAR fills 20% of seats in state agricultural universities (and all seats in some central agricultural universities and ICAR institutes such as IARI's Assam and Jharkhand campuses, NDRI Karnal and IVRI) on the basis of CUET-UG ranks, replacing the old ICAR AIEEA-UG. After CUET results in June, you register on ICAR's counselling portal in July, select your subject combination for rank generation, then fill choices; allotment runs in several rounds from late July. Second, the state route: the remaining 80% of seats in each state agricultural university are filled by that state, through its own entrance test (for example KCET, MHT-CET, TS/AP EAPCET, Rajasthan's JET, UP's CUET or state lists) or through CUET-UG or Class 12 marks. Apply to both routes, and check whether your state reserves seats for students with Agriculture as a Class 12 subject or for farmers' children.

Is it you?
A good fit if
- You like biology or chemistry and want to apply it to something tangible
- You are comfortable with outdoor field work and rural postings
- You are aiming for state government jobs (agriculture officer, horticulture officer) or banking agri roles
- You come from a farming family and want to modernise it, or want to work in agri-startups
Think twice if
- You dislike working outdoors, in heat or in villages
- You expect a corporate office job in a metro straight after graduation
- You are choosing it only because it is 'easier than MBBS'; it has a heavy practical load
- You are not willing to consider a master's for research or specialised roles
The honest part
- Government jobs are the most sought-after outcome and depend on state recruitment cycles
- Private-sector field jobs involve travel, targets and rural postings
- Some private colleges offer B.Sc Agriculture without adequate farmland or labs; check before joining
- Research careers usually need an M.Sc and PhD through ICAR's PG exams
- Climate, agritech and food processing are growing areas, but many roles are still being built
What it costs
- Government
- State agricultural universities and ICAR institutes charge roughly ₹15,000–1.5 lakh a year including hostel; most seats are government
- Private
- Private universities offering B.Sc Agriculture charge roughly ₹60,000–2.5 lakh a year; check that the programme meets ICAR accreditation norms
- Help
- ICAR offers a National Talent Scholarship to students admitted through its national quota who study outside their home state; check current conditions. State scholarships and fee concessions for farmers' children exist in several states.
Rough 2026 ranges to compare routes. Fees differ by college and state and change every year.

Questions families ask
Can a PCM student do B.Sc Agriculture?
Yes, for the ICAR quota. ICAR requires at least three of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and Agriculture, so PCM qualifies. Some universities have extra conditions for specific programmes, so check before choosing.
Is the ICAR exam still held?
Not as a separate exam. ICAR now uses CUET-UG ranks for its 20% national quota in state agricultural universities (and 100% of seats in some central institutions). You take CUET-UG, then register on ICAR's counselling portal.
Is B.Sc Agriculture a professional degree?
ICAR's 2026 information bulletin states that all undergraduate degrees in agricultural sciences have been declared professional degrees. Some states treat it as a professional course for jobs and fee purposes.
What are the best government jobs after B.Sc Agriculture?
State agriculture or horticulture officer, bank agricultural field officer, and, with further study, scientist posts through ICAR's recruitment. UPSC civil services and forest service are also open to agriculture graduates.
Should I go for a private college if I miss the government seat?
Only if it has real farmland, labs, qualified faculty and meets ICAR norms. A weak private B.Sc Agriculture can leave you without the practical skills employers and recruitment exams expect.
