Two small, very selective undergraduate programmes run by the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), an Institute of National Importance: B.Stat (Hons) at Kolkata and B.Math (Hons) at Bengaluru. They are among the most rigorous maths-heavy degrees in India and feed directly into ISI's M.Stat and M.Math, research, and quantitative jobs in finance and data science. ISI also runs a newer four-year B.SDS (Statistical Data Science). These suit students who are genuinely strong at, and love, mathematics.
Know this. The ISI entrance is not a board-exam test and not a JEE test; it rewards genuine mathematical problem-solving, and students who prepare only with JEE material often struggle. Start with olympiad-level books and ISI's own past papers and sample questions. Also note that B.Stat is only three years, so for a PhD abroad many students go on to M.Stat or another master's first.
Getting in
Bachelor of Statistics (Honours) and Bachelor of Mathematics (Honours), Indian Statistical Institute
Who can apply
Class 12 (or equivalent) with Mathematics and English as subjects. Science is not compulsory, so a commerce student with Mathematics is eligible. For the four-year B.SDS (Hons), ISI additionally asks for Class 12 in the current or previous year with Mathematics or Applied Mathematics and English, and at least 75% aggregate.
How admission works
Admission is through ISI's own admission test, held once a year, usually in May, with an application window around February–March. The test has an objective paper and a subjective paper at a level well above Class 12 board maths: problem-solving in algebra, combinatorics, number theory, inequalities and calculus. Shortlisted candidates may be interviewed. There is also a separate channel for students who qualify in the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO), who are called for interview. Merit lists and seat allocation happen in June–July on ISI's admission portal. No JEE, CUET or state counselling is involved; you must apply on ISI's portal.

What you study
- B.Stat year 1: probability, statistical methods, analysis (calculus done rigorously), linear algebra, computing and programming
- B.Stat year 2: probability theory, sample surveys, design of experiments, economics, statistical inference
- B.Stat year 3: regression, time series, multivariate analysis, statistical quality control, electives, projects with real data
- B.Math: analysis, algebra, topology, differential equations, probability, and physics or computer science as a subsidiary
- Both: proof-based courses from the first semester, and regular problem sets that take many hours
Specialisations: B.Stat (Hons) at Kolkata · B.Math (Hons) at Bengaluru · B.SDS (Hons), Statistical Data Science, taught across Kolkata, Delhi and Bengaluru (4 years, separate application)
Is it you?
A good fit if
- You enjoy olympiad-style or proof-based maths, not just board-exam maths
- You want a research or quantitative career (statistics, finance, data science, economics)
- You like small classes and a demanding, academic culture
- You are fine with a three-year degree followed by a master's
Think twice if
- You find Class 12 maths hard or only score well by practice of set patterns
- You want a broad campus life with many clubs and a large student body
- You want a job straight after three years in a non-quantitative field
- You are looking for an engineering or professional licence
The honest part
- Very few seats and a demanding test; treat it as one application among several, not the only plan
- The course load is heavy and grading is strict; some students find the jump from school hard
- Campus life is small and academic; Kolkata and Bengaluru campuses are not large residential universities
- The best-paid outcomes usually come after the master's, not the bachelor's
What it costs
- Government
- ISI's 2026 admission notice lists a stipend of ₹5,000 a month for B.Stat and B.Math students and states no tuition fee for these two programmes; hostel and mess are extra. B.SDS charges ₹1 lakh a semester in tuition, with full waiver for SC/ST/PwBD and full or partial waiver by family income.
- Private
- Not applicable; ISI is a public institute
- Help
- Check the current year's admission notice and fee document, since stipend and fees are revised occasionally and the stipend can be tied to academic performance.
Rough 2026 ranges to compare routes. Fees differ by college and state and change every year.

Questions families ask
Can a commerce student apply to ISI B.Stat?
Yes, if Mathematics and English were subjects in Class 12. ISI does not require Physics or Chemistry for B.Stat or B.Math. The test is purely mathematical, so the stream matters less than your maths ability.
Is B.Stat better than B.Sc Statistics at a university?
It is more rigorous and better connected to research and quantitative jobs, and ISI's own M.Stat is a natural next step. But a strong B.Sc Statistics or Mathematics from a good university followed by an M.Stat, IIT M.Sc or MBA can lead to similar careers.
How should I prepare for the ISI test?
Use ISI's official syllabus and sample questions, solve past papers, and practise olympiad-style problems in algebra, number theory, combinatorics, inequalities and calculus. Writing complete, clear proofs matters for the subjective paper.
Do B.Stat students get paid?
ISI's 2026 admission notice lists a monthly stipend for B.Stat and B.Math students. The amount and the conditions (for example, keeping a minimum academic performance) can change, so read the current notice.
What is B.SDS and how is it different?
B.SDS (Hons) is ISI's four-year Statistical Data Science degree, with a separate application, a 75% Class 12 requirement, and tuition fees. It is more applied and data-focused than B.Stat.
