The professional degree that makes you a veterinarian: a doctor for animals, from pets to cattle, poultry, wildlife and zoo animals. It also covers animal husbandry, dairy, meat and poultry production, and public health issues that pass between animals and people. It is regulated by the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) under the MSVE Regulations, 2016. It suits PCB students who like animals, do not mind physical and often rural work, and want a clinical or government career.
Know this. Most veterinary jobs in India are with livestock (cattle, buffalo, poultry, goats) and government animal husbandry services, not with pet dogs and cats in city clinics. Students who picture only pet practice are often surprised. The upside is that government veterinary posts are relatively stable and many states recruit regularly.
Getting in
Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry
Who can apply
Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology and English as a core subject, with at least 50% aggregate in these subjects (47.5% for SC, ST and other notified categories), as set by the VCI MSVE Regulations, 2016. You must be at least 17 years old by 31 December of the admission year and must qualify NEET-UG.
How admission works
15% of seats in recognised veterinary colleges across India are filled by the Veterinary Council of India through its own online counselling, based purely on NEET-UG rank, in rounds (Round 1, Round 2 and a stray round) usually from about August to October. The other 85% are state-quota seats, filled by state veterinary universities or state counselling bodies. Most states now use NEET-UG ranks for these too, but a few use their own state entrance tests or state agriculture/veterinary counselling; check your state's veterinary university notice. VCI counselling is separate from MCC medical counselling, so register for it separately.
- Duration
- 5½ years, including a compulsory one-year internship
- Entrance
- NEET-UG · State CETs (engineering, pharmacy, agriculture)
What you study
- Early years: veterinary anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, livestock production and management, animal nutrition and genetics
- Middle years: veterinary pathology, microbiology, parasitology, pharmacology and toxicology, public health and epidemiology
- Later years: veterinary medicine, surgery and radiology, gynaecology and obstetrics, clinical practice in the teaching hospital
- Livestock products technology: milk, meat and poultry processing
- Extension education and animal welfare law
- Final year: one-year compulsory internship covering clinics, livestock farms, slaughterhouses and field postings
Specialisations: Specialisation through M.V.Sc: veterinary medicine, surgery, gynaecology, pathology, microbiology, animal nutrition, animal genetics and breeding, livestock products technology, public health, wildlife
Is it you?
A good fit if
- You genuinely like animals and are not squeamish about handling them
- You are open to working in villages, farms and field postings
- You want a steady government job or your own clinic
- You are interested in food safety, dairy, poultry or public health
- You would be comfortable being the only animal doctor for several villages, making decisions on your own
Think twice if
- You picture only small-animal (pet) practice in a big city; that is a small part of the job market
- You have allergies to animals or strongly dislike farm environments
- You expect salaries like doctors in human medicine
- You do not want to work outdoors or travel for field work
The honest part
- Seats are fewer than MBBS and cut-offs in many states are high
- Field work in rural areas, in heat and in difficult conditions, is common
- Private sector pay starts modestly
- Recruitment for government posts depends on state vacancies and can be irregular
- Zoo and wildlife vet jobs are very few
- One Health work (diseases such as rabies, bird flu and brucellosis that pass between animals and people) is a growing area, but most such posts need an M.V.Sc or MPH
What it costs
- Government
- State veterinary colleges charge roughly ₹15,000–1 lakh a year; most seats are in government colleges
- Private
- The few private veterinary colleges charge roughly ₹3–8 lakh a year
- Help
- Government seats dominate this field, which keeps overall costs lower than MBBS or BDS. Interns usually get a stipend. State post-matric scholarships apply.
Rough 2026 ranges to compare routes. Fees differ by college and state and change every year.

Questions families ask
Is NEET needed for veterinary courses?
Yes, for the 15% All India Quota filled by VCI, and most states also use NEET ranks for their 85% state quota. A few states have used their own tests; always check your state veterinary university's admission notice.
How long is B.V.Sc & A.H.?
Five and a half years, including a one-year compulsory internship, according to the VCI information bulletin under the MSVE Regulations, 2016.
What marks do I need in Class 12?
At least 50% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English for general category, and 47.5% for SC, ST and other notified categories, as set by the VCI MSVE Regulations, 2016.
Is VCI counselling the same as MCC counselling?
No. MCC handles medical and dental seats. VCI runs its own online counselling for the 15% veterinary quota, and states run their own. You must register separately.
Can vets work abroad?
Yes, but countries such as the UK, US, Canada and Australia require their own veterinary licensing exams. It is a long, expensive process; plan for it separately.
