IPM is a five-year programme run by some Indian Institutes of Management that takes students straight after Class 12 and awards both an undergraduate degree and an MBA. IIM Indore started it and awards a BA (Foundations of Management) plus an MBA; IIM Rohtak awards a BBA plus an MBA; several newer IIMs run similar programmes. It suits a strong all-round student who is fairly sure at 17 that they want a management career and wants to skip the CAT race after graduation.
Know this. Families see 'IIM' and 'MBA at 22' and stop there. The real trade-off is commitment and cost: you are choosing management at 17, the last two years are charged at full MBA fees, and you reach the job market without work experience, which some top recruiters value. IPM is a strong route for the right student, but a regular BBA or B.Com followed by a few years of work and CAT is not a worse path — only a different one.
Getting in
Five-Year Integrated Programme in Management (BBA/BA + MBA) at IIMs
Who can apply
For IIM Indore's 2026–31 batch: born on or after 1 August 2006 (five years' relaxation for SC/ST/PwD), Class 12 passed in 2024 or 2025 or appearing in 2026, and Class 10 passed. IIM Indore's current procedure sets no minimum percentage, but other IIMs set their own rules, and some require minimum marks in Class 10 and 12. Any Class 12 stream is accepted, though the test has a heavy maths section.
How admission works
IIM Indore conducts IPMAT (the IPM Aptitude Test) usually in May, at centres across India. For 2026 it had three sections of 40 minutes each: Quantitative Ability (multiple choice), Quantitative Ability (short answer) and Verbal Ability, with negative marking except in the short-answer section. Candidates who clear sectional cut-offs are shortlisted by an aptitude score that weights verbal ability at half and the two quant sections at a quarter each, then called for a personal interview; the final merit uses 65% aptitude test and 35% interview. IIM Rohtak runs its own IPMAT for its programme. Some other IIMs accept IIM Indore's IPMAT score, and two IIMs admit through JIPMAT, conducted by the National Testing Agency. You apply separately to each institute and need to check which test each one uses.

Is it you?
A good fit if
- You are strong at both maths and English and do well in timed aptitude tests
- You are fairly sure you want a business or management career
- You like discussion, presentations and group work as much as exams
- Your family can plan for fees that rise sharply in the MBA years, or you are ready to take an education loan
- You would rather commit now than prepare for CAT during graduation
Think twice if
- You are not sure yet whether you want management or a subject like engineering, medicine or law
- Maths is your weak area — IPMAT and the early years lean on it
- The cost of the MBA years would stretch your family without a loan or scholarship
- You want work experience before an MBA, which many recruiters value
- You would prefer a specialist technical or research degree
The honest part
- Seats are few and IPMAT is competitive; prepare for it the way you would for any national entrance.
- The first three years feel like a liberal-arts college, not a business school; some students expect more 'business' too early.
- Continuing into the MBA years can depend on your grades — IIM Rohtak, for example, requires a minimum CGPA at the end of year three.
- Placement outcomes differ a lot between older and newer IIMs; look at each institute's own placement report.
- IPM is not the only door to an IIM: the two-year MBA through CAT remains the main route.
What it costs
- Government
- IIMs are public institutes but fees are high. At IIM Indore the first three years cost about ₹6 lakh a year for domestic students; years four and five are charged at the institute's two-year MBA rates, which are several times higher. Total cost across five years is often in the range of ₹25–40 lakh at older IIMs; newer IIMs tend to be lower.
- Private
- Private universities now offer five-year integrated BBA-MBA programmes at a range of fees, often ₹2–6 lakh a year, but without the IIM brand or placement access.
- Help
- IIMs run need-based financial aid and fee waivers for students from low-income families, and banks give education loans against IIM admissions.
Rough 2026 ranges to compare routes. Fees differ by college and state and change every year.

Questions families ask
Can a PCB or arts student apply for IPM?
Yes. IIM Indore accepts Class 12 from any stream. The catch is the test: two of its three sections are quantitative, so a student who dropped maths after Class 10 has to work hard on it.
Can I leave after three years?
At IIM Indore, students may exit after successfully completing the third year and receive the BA (Foundations of Management). At IIM Rohtak, students below a minimum CGPA at the end of year three exit with a BBA. Exiting early means you do not get the IIM MBA or its placement.
Which IIMs run IPM, and which test do they use?
IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak run their own tests. Several newer IIMs run similar five-year programmes; some accept IIM Indore's IPMAT score and some admit through JIPMAT. Check each institute's admission page for the current year, because this changes.
Is IPM better than a BBA followed by CAT?
It removes the CAT gamble and the gap years, and the brand helps. But it costs more, commits you early, and you graduate without work experience. A student who is unsure about management, or who wants to try a job first, may do better with a regular degree and CAT later.
When should I start preparing for IPMAT?
Most serious applicants start in Class 11 or the summer before Class 12, alongside board exams. The quant is at a higher level than board maths in speed and tricks, and the verbal section rewards reading habits built over years.
