कहानी का अंत उसका सबसे मार्मिक भाग है। वर्षों जेल में रहने के बाद रहमत छूटकर मिनी के विवाह के दिन उससे मिलने आता है और हमेशा की तरह मेवे तथा अंगूर लाता है। वह उसी नन्ही बच्ची को देखने की आशा करता है, पर सामने एक बड़ी दुल्हन आ जाती है और वह स्तब्ध रह जाता है। तब वह एक काग़ज़ निकालता है, जिस पर उसकी अपनी बेटी के हाथ की कोयले से बनी छाप है, जिसे उसने वर्षों अपने हृदय के पास सँभाला था। यह देखकर मिनी के पिता का हृदय भर आता है। उन्हें समझ आता है कि यह ग़रीब मेवे वाला भी उन्हीं की तरह एक पिता है, जिसका हृदय अपने दूर बैठे बच्चे के लिए तड़पता है। करुणा से भरकर पिता विवाह का खर्च घटाकर रहमत को पैसे देते हैं, ताकि वह भी घर लौटकर अपनी बेटी से मिल सके। यह अंत सशक्त रूप से दिखाता है कि पिता का अपने बच्चे के प्रति प्रेम पवित्र और सार्वभौमिक है, एक ग़रीब अफ़ग़ान और एक शिक्षित बंगाली में एक समान। यह हमें सिखाता है कि सभी बाहरी भेदों से ऊपर मानवीय भावनाओं को महत्व देना चाहिए।
